It’s a National Non-Emergency: Trump thread 91

Here we are in February 2019 - Trump has declared a National Emergency to funnel the funds for his border wall, he’s just come off a ridiculous SOTU that contained more lies than not, and he’s just tweeted this:

Donald J. Trump @realDonaldTrump 2h2 hours ago
More
“These guys, the investigators, ought to be in jail. What they have done, working with the Obama intelligence agencies, is simply unprecedented. This is one of the greatest political hoaxes ever perpetrated on the people of this Country, and Mueller is a coverup.” Rush Limbaugh

But here’s a reminder he’s not one of the sharpest tools in the box.

Who is the NY Governor? Remind me.

AcrossthePond55 · 13/03/2019 18:37

Andrew Cuomo, Democrat.

Son of former 3 time governor Mario Cuomo. Brother of Chris Cuomo CNN journalist and host of 'Cuomo Prime Time'.

In 1993, Cuomo joined the Clinton Administration as Assistant Secretary for Community Planning and Development in the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development. From 1997 to 2001, he served as the U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development.

"In 2006, Cuomo was elected Attorney General of New York. He won the election as Governor of New York in 2010 and has been reelected twice after winning primaries against liberal challengers Zephyr Teachout (2014) and Cynthia Nixon (2018). During his first term, Cuomo oversaw the passage of a same-sex marriage law, gun control legislation, and a property tax cap, and also signed medical marijuana legislation. In his second term, Cuomo successfully pushed for an increase in New York's minimum wage." Wiki

I'd say (if convicted) Manafort has as much chance of getting a pardon from Cuomo as I have of being crowned Queen of the UK.

"Let my wife and I be together" is hideously ungrammatical.

It is, isn't it, Annie.Smile

I don't usually carp in public about poor SPaG. But I'm willing to make an exception.Grin

#BREAKING: Rep. Jerry Nadler says during today's closed-door meeting, former acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker "did not deny that the president called him to discuss the Michael Cohen case and personnel decisions in the Southern District" -- something he denied last month

Under oath?

Per Rep. Jerry Nadler: While he was acting AG, Matthew Whitaker was also "directly involved in conversations about whether to fire one or more US attorneys" AND whether SDNY "went too far in pursuing the campaign finance case" involving Trump. 2/

Nadler: “Unlike in the hearing room, Whitaker did not deny that the president told him to discuss the Michael Cohen case and personnel decisions in the Southern District.”

“While he was acting AG, Whitaker was directly involved in conversations about where to fire 1 or more US attorneys.”

Nadler says Whitaker also in convos re: “scope of SDNY USA Berman’s recusal & whether the Southern District went too far in pursuing the campaign finance case”

My view is that former Deputy AG Matthew Whitaker lied to me, or at the very least seriously misled the @HouseJudiciary Committee, when he said "No" to my direct question of whether he discussed SDNY investigations with @realDonaldTrump.

Good good, about the investigations into Facebook.

But this bit at the end of the article...

The company has taken steps in the past year to tackle data misuse and misinformation. Last week, Mr. Zuckerberg unveiled a plan that would begin to pivot Facebook away from being a platform for public sharing and put more emphasis on private communications.

Translation: "Keep giving us your private comms and data. It's OK, we won't let your friends or the public see it; we'll just spy on you, and sell it to other companies which want to spy on you."

TheClaws · 13/03/2019 23:54

Trump is very sad about Manafort. “It’s a very sad situation,” Trump told reporters at the White House. “Certainly on a human basis, it’s a very sad thing. I feel badly for him.” (Remember, this is a convicted criminal who conspired against the US.)

It’s my understanding that the 1st Amendment protects free speech from government impediment. The National Guard doesn’t need to ‘protect’ it - that doesn’t even really make sense. What D’Souza and Fox are proposing here is a silly, but dangerous road. What people may lose here are not civil rights, but civil liberties.

Laura Ingraham Retweeted

Dinesh D'Souza @DineshDSouza
Eisenhower sent in the National Guard to protect civil rights.

So why not do the same if necessary to protect civil liberties?

The First Amendment is not less important than the Fourteenth Amendment.

AcrossthePond55 · 14/03/2019 12:16

1st amendment:

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

Doesn't say anything about 'sending the troops in', does it? In fact, it seems to specifically say that the Govt shouldn't get involved.

Of course, it's much more complicated than that, and there have been myriad SCOTUS cases regarding interpretation of the 1st amendment.

You have to admire the Great Wise Man's insights (quoting the Guardian:

Trump said Brexit was “tearing countries apart”. He said:
"It’s a very complex thing right now, it’s tearing a country apart, it’s actually tearing a lot of countries apart and it’s a shame it has to be that way but I think we will stay right in our lane." (my note: who's "we"?)

He criticised May’s handling of Brexit, saying he was “surprised how badly it has all gone”. He said:
"I’m surprised at how badly it has all gone from a stand point of negotiations but I gave the prime minister my ideas of how to negotiate it, she didn’t listen to that and that’s fine but it could have been negotiated in a different manner." Grin

Trump, of course, was a supporter of Brexit.

He said he thought Brexit would have to be delayed. He said:
"I think they are probably going to have to do something because right now they are in the midst of a very short period of time, at the end of the month and they are not going to be able to do that." (my note: no shit)
