Is everyone in films constantly fucking mumbling these days?!

DP is making me watch some shit with Tom Hardy in it and we’ve got the volume up 3x louder than normal yet they’re still barely audible

Mumble mumble mumble
Gruff breathy voices
Mumble mumble mumble

It’s pissing me right off
It’s a good job he’s pretty and I can appreciate it without hearing what he’s saying but still!

Is it just me?

Dad, is that you?

Pumpkintopf · 17/02/2019 22:08

I agree with you op. I'm sure they do it on purpose sometimes. Tom Hardy as Bane in Batman was completely unintelligible.

Smile19 · 17/02/2019 22:12

@notso you just made me laugh so loud I nealry woke the baby!

Dreamzcancometrue · 17/02/2019 22:13

I think you need to get out more.

Bambamber · 17/02/2019 22:14

I agree, I find the sound effects to be really loud but struggle to heart what they're saying. I'm aalwyas turning the volume up and down

PurplePepperEater · 17/02/2019 22:15

Notso shit I thought as much Grin

Pumpkin I think they think it makes them sound intense and sexy but it just makes me spend half the film going “ey? What’s he saying? Who’s that? Why don’t they like him then?” ... oh god I’m my own dad 🤦🏻‍♀️

MargotSimpson · 17/02/2019 22:15

[unintelligible muttering]

turns TV right up

[sudden explosion/action sequence deafens everyone in 1 mile radius]

PurplePepperEater · 17/02/2019 22:16

Yes Bambam me too! I can’t hear what they’re saying then there will be a driving scene and boom! Makes me shit myself Grin

Dreamz I absolutely do you’re right, you paying?

OP posts:
toriatoriatoria · 17/02/2019 22:16

I agree! I'm forever turning the volume up and down... The special effects are seriously loud, the rest of the time everyone is mumbling.

PurplePepperEater · 17/02/2019 22:16

Ha Margot x post! So glad it’s not just me

Ooh what’s on and where?

Tom Hardy as Bane in Batman was completely unintelligible.

Sexiest voice on screen Grin

DaphneFanshaw · 17/02/2019 22:18

Yy, to the mumbling dialogues followed by deafening explosions.
Why can’t there be some sort of happy medium.

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 17/02/2019 22:19

Is it Taboo? That was really mumbly.

elephantoverthehill · 17/02/2019 22:19

It is not just us. My Dcs insist on having the subtitles on the screen.

Iamtheworst · 17/02/2019 22:19

Subtitles, subtitles for everything.
Tom is a particularly mumbly.

I can hear a gnat fart 3 houses away but film it and put it on tv and I can’t hear a dam thing.

Didntwanttochangemyname · 17/02/2019 22:20

Are you watching the Revenant? I literally had no bloody idea what was going on in that, Tom Hardy's accent and mumbling was ridiculous!

ILoveMaxiBondi · 17/02/2019 22:21

Is it Taboo? That was really mumbly.

It was really “thigh-y” too Grin

NotSorry · 17/02/2019 22:21

we have the subtitles on for everything - it's ridiculous

Tigger001 · 17/02/2019 22:21

@Notso that just made me laugh out loud. I could say the same about my father in law.

Redpriestandmozart · 17/02/2019 22:22

And all the films are so dark I can't see a thing!

DippyAvocado · 17/02/2019 22:22

I was just thinking this when watching A Star Is Born. Had to keep turning the volume right up to make out what anyone was saying, then they would start playing a song and I was almost deafened.

PurplePepperEater · 17/02/2019 22:23

Oh god the Revenant - there’s about 18 hours of my life I’ll never get back, Leo got beat up by a bear, that’s all I got from that film 🤷🏻‍♀️

It’s called the warrior, some boxing shite, between the fights I’m sure there is some kind of storyline but I’ll be buggered if I know what it is!

Me too. I thought I needed my ears syringed.

BigChocFrenzy · 17/02/2019 22:24

In old films, the actors speak clearly, so it's not just my ears

Yes, I have a hearing disability, but I can still hear the old 'uns
You have to have damn good hearing to be able to understand some of the modern actors

< not your mum, either >

WinterfellWench · 17/02/2019 22:25

Absolutely agree. There are so many good TV shows AND films that I have seen this past 5 years that are a struggle to hear. Happy Valley was quite bad, as was Broadchurch. Same with some other shows, (including a few netflix ones.) I have to have the subtitles on half the time. Confused

They mumble and whisper and sigh and then mumble again.

On the (very funny) Tracey Ullman show that was on one or two years ago, she did a sketch that was having a pop at crime shows where the people mumbled and bumbled their lines.

VERY annoying!
