Spoiler alert!! Did anyone actually like it?! I have just endured the final (I hope) instalment of Cleaning Up. It was laughable but I just had to watch it to see how the feckless 'heroine' would fare.

Well, am I wrong about how they made their money at the end? They bought high, 6k into £16.00 shares, then they sold when the business went bust and the share-price plummeted to £1-something, and they made 16k. I'm no financial genius but even I know that is the wrong bleedin way round!

How can a show be made with such ridiculous and stupid errors? Do they think we're too dumb to notice?

It’s the worst thing I’ve seen her in.

To short - you borrow the shares from your broker, not sure how she managed this. Sell them at a high price, wait for the crash, buy them back and return them. Keep the profit.

I don’t think she was cured of gambling, she’d just moved on to a better class of gambling.

longwayoff · 15/02/2019 08:26

Never mind SS, Baptiste is back!!! Sunday night bbc1 I think. Hurrah!

Kazzyhoward · 15/02/2019 09:12

I actually enjoyed it until last night's episode. Yes, there were lots of anomalies and inaccuracy in earlier episodes but it was just about excusable. Last episode was ridiculous though - it looked as if they'd completely run out of ideas and had no idea how to end it, so just quickly made a load of stuff up to try to wrap it up. Completely spoiled the series for me. I actually wish I'd not seen the last episode - most of it was nonsensical and factually incorrect.

I just can't understand why TV writers do it. On the one hand they argue that they want things to be realistic (to get away with sensational storylines) but then they write stuff which is factually incorrect or just plain bonkers. It's the same with the latest Vera series - a couple of the storylines have been finance/business related and a lot of it has been plain wrong, simply down to lack of research rather than artistic licence.

It's like the soaps, someone studies accountancy or law at uni, and the next thing, they're running an accountancy/solicitors practice, without actually ever working in such an office (they need supervised experience for 2/3 years normally), without passing the professional body exams (that you need to do after getting your degree). And not only that, they're experts in every field, i.e. your sole trader corner solicitor handles everything, court cases, murderers, matrimonial disputes, business contracts - it's so unrealistic, it spoils the whole thing and makes a mockery of the gritty storylines justified by realism!

Found the last episode totally bizarre. So many loose ends and a hurried sprint in the last ten minutes to finish. Was that just appalling writing or are they setting up for a second series? I mean... So much unresolved. Did she pay Glynn back his money? Does she get her own place again? Does she get the girls back? Also didn't buy that her gambling habit suddenly disappeared...

Kazzyhoward · 15/02/2019 09:20

So many loose ends

And of course, all you need to do to start a business is pay a tenner to Companies House for a limited company and start ringing round the top firms. Of course, all the top lawyers will just hand out cleaning contracts to a threesome who've no references, no trading history, no equipment, etc. So unrealistic it was bizarre.

Peachy85 · 15/02/2019 12:24

I was really looking forward to this show from seeing the trailers... The clever idea of the cleaners sneaking around the confidential info and scoring big off the stockmarket and all... But after the first episode it was a emotional drama about a woman with a gambling problem... It just was a lot more boring than i thought...Hmm havent even seen the end...

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 15/02/2019 12:26

I liked it, but I'm embarrassed to say I didn't really understand it.

Millimollimandi · 15/02/2019 12:30

Thank Heavens! I recorded the first episode (I love Sheridan Smith) - watched half of it and switched off. Glad I didn't bother wasting my life on the rest!

Hobbesmanc · 15/02/2019 13:03

Our whole office was united in our shared hatred of this show. I had been quite surprised at how many people dislike Sheridan Smith and Keira Knightly, Nicole Kidman and Cheryl Cole) - I've always quite liked her. But this was really pants. Seriously who wrote the script!!

Her voice and mannerisms as posh Nancy were just so awful- that little smug grin and the power walk. And she really did treat everyone appallingly. I was literally howling with rage at the last episode. I seriously wanted Swanny to be a gangster and kill her.

WiddlinDiddlin · 15/02/2019 13:14

I am a huge Sheridan fan but it wasn't great, no.

I think the last episode sets up for another series... if it got good enough ratings.

Her gambling isn't cured, she's moved to a 'better' class of gambling thats all.

As for taking the 14K.. the WHOLE thing was fronted by her mate selling the van for 6K, and shes happy that Sams taken the lot and left her with only 2K.. as if!

flumposie · 15/02/2019 13:35

I enjoyed it but had little sympathy for her as a character. Often swore at her stupidity.

Meralia · 15/02/2019 13:42

‘Good Girls’ on Netflix is a brilliant show, kind of similar, a group of women struggling financially for different reasons decide to enter into criminal activity. It’s funny, a few twists, and the script is very clever.

Mushroomsarehorrible · 15/02/2019 13:46

it was UTTER pony. Watched half of the first episode. Wish I had spent that time doing something more interesting like cleaning the loo

MountPheasant · 15/02/2019 13:52

I’ve not seen it, but I work in investment and it sounds like short selling, where you trade on the promise of a potential slump.

megletthesecond · 15/02/2019 13:58

Was that what they did in Trading Places?

Grace212 · 15/02/2019 13:58

I liked it

think you missed something OP, as the final deal was based on shorting, not buying low and selling high!

oreoxoreo · 15/02/2019 13:59

The show (especially the ending) was ridiculous but SS was brilliant no matter how unlikeable as a character!
I also liked Jess and Glynn. And thought the ex husband was pretty reasonable!
They could have done it so much better, but overall it was entertaining to watch.

Crazypaintlady · 15/02/2019 13:59

I really enjoyed it, yes it was far fetched, ridiculous, full of plot holes. But it was also easy viewing, funny, sad, tense, dare I say likeable characters, even if I'm a love to hate way.

It was pretty clear from the second episode that it wasn't going to be realistic.

I don't think Sam was supposed to be cured, just that as things were looking up, she was able to say no to the gambling at that time. Which is true of addicts.

I thought the ending was left open, things were on the up for now at least, but quite clear is could easily all start going wrong.

sebsebseb · 15/02/2019 14:02

How did Sam manage to short sell? How on earth did she find a broker willing to lend her the stocks?

Roussette · 15/02/2019 14:04

The best character was Glynn. I've got a brother like Glynn Grin

How his wife puts up with him, god alone knows! (my brother that is) He's always making things out of things or repairing things, or buying on eBay things and mending them like iPhones or cameras. He'll get obsessed with something and buy loads of them. He's always taking things apart. He'd drive me potty

TwitterQueen1 · 15/02/2019 14:07

It was utter garbage. I can't believe I wasted so many hours on it, thinking it would get better....

Gambling habit kicked overnight - see? anyone can do it! You just need to steal thousands of pounds.
Stealing Glen's money? Yes of course, no problem - let's just move past that shall we.
As someone else said, 16k profit, including Jess's van money - I'll just take 14k of that to pay off my debts. Yes, no problem.
And how and where did that profit come from?

Not to mention the fact that Sam never yelled, never got stressed with the kids, never swore, always smiled.... aagghhh! why did I watch it?

MrsChollySawcutt · 15/02/2019 14:32

I think I may be morphing into Gran from the Catherine Tate Show 'What a load of old shite'.

Actually I think the 'plot' is bloody irresponsible with regard to its attitude to gambling addiction. The message seems to be don't worry about treating your addiction, keep gambling, lying and stealing from your friends and family - you'll get a big win and it will turn out alright in the end. HmmConfused

Grace212 · 15/02/2019 14:37

were we watching the same show?

she didn't gamble once - that's not to say she won't do it next time.

it didn't work out okay, she's lost her home and had to live apart from her DC.

they're clearly setting up for the next series, but while it had a feelgood element to the ending, it wasn't all rosy by any stretch.

sweetkitty · 15/02/2019 14:37

Didn’t watch it past episode 2

sebsebseb · 15/02/2019 14:41

Seems not! Wink

She gambled her entire 50k on a single roulette number.
