To ask if it's possible to poop out a swallowed lollypop stick?

Four year old swallowed a chupa chup lollypop on Sunday, stick and allShock

Ambulance blue lighted us to A&E as prior to swallowing it the damn thing was lodged in his throat choking him to the point I thought he wasn't going to survive.

Doctor at A&E assured us he was fine and it would work its way through his intestines and make an appearance sometime this week.

So far there's has been no sign of it, no tummyaches & he's no problems peeing or pooing but my minds baffled as to how a 5 inch plastic lollypop stick is going to work it's way through his tiny, curvy intestinesHmm

So, AIBU to ask has this happened to you or yours and did the stick reappear in time?

*Disclaimer - I know how dangerous lollpops can be & I didn't give it to him, he arrived home with it after a trip out and no sooner had he sat down than he was choking.

Really they should be giving you an X-ray to see where it is. It’s long, straight and relatively hard , the opposite to your bowel and colon. I’d be a bit worried about perforation.

I am very worried, I phoned the GP today but she refused to refer us for an x-ray as she doesn't know if plastic would show up on it.

Since writing this he has twice said his tummy hurts but he is still playing and asking for food and drink and hasn't mentioned it since.

I suppose you will just have to keep a very close eye on him, which I'm sure you are doing already. I suppose in reality, even if they could see it on an X-ray they are not going to operate to get it out unless it's causing problems. Hope it appears soon for you

Anyway, not knowing if it will show up is not good enough - she needs to find out! I think I would be pushing this!

A quick google suggests that it would show up on an x-ray.

It was definitely plastic and not the paper type and apparently plastic will not be broken down by the gastric juices.

I've just been looking at his poo when he has one, his stools are usually smallish and the stick.would be longer than them and visible.

I'm really am considering a trip to a different A&E.

I'm not sure showing up at a different A&E will help. Both the A&E you went to and your GP are saying the same thing.

Wow, I let DS who is the same age have them occasionally, didn't realise they can be dangerous Shock.

How long did they say it will take?

He'd been to see his mum who probably doesn't feel guilty as everything is always somebody elses fault.

A&E said it should take 24 to 48 hours and its been much longer than that now and he has had the runs since last night.

I think the reason A&E didn't x-ray him at the time is because it would have just been sat in his stomach as he'd only just swallowed it so it would have been pointless.

The GP did say back to A&E if I'm worried, I just thought A&E was for more urgent care and an appointment for an x-ray was more appropriate in this case.

Don't want to alarm you but I've seen many cases of foreign objects that have caused perforation. I would go back to A and E and tell them it hasn't passed yet and mention he has had stomach issues. Does he have a temperature at all?

If he's got pain and diarrhea then I would take him to A&E personally. There's a chance it's caused a bit of a blockage so only the liquid is getting through IYSWIM. They will know what to do.

With your DS mentioning tummy pain and the diarrhoea I would be going back to A&E as soon as possible. I can't believe the GP fobbed you off

My fear is a blockage or perforation happening, he doesn't have a temp and seems well in himself but started with diarrhea yesterday and was on the toilet again with it first thing this morning.
I think I'll take him back to A&E today.

I'd go back to a&e if the gp won't refer you for an x-ray/scan. Diarrhoea could be a sign something's up if he's been eating normally.

Vet here so not quite the same but I see tons of lolly pops eaten and passed through. I have even let a needle ride through a cat with no ill effect. HOWEVER when doing this if the animal became ill they were to return immediately.
Feed lots of fiber. It can take longer than the normal transition time in animals.

My son ate a magnet (super fun..). It was HUGE, but it came out okay after four days. If you're worried though I'd take him back in just to be safe. With kids it's always better to be safe than sorry.

I was told when DD swallowed a plastic bead that there was no point in an x-ray as the plastic wouldn't show up.

GO TO A AND E

I really don't know why you are waffling about on her - he has a tummy ache and diarrhea, potentially a blockage. They will likely be able to see in intestines , especially if there is a blockage.

7 years ago my then 6 year old swallowed a 2p coin. It initially got stuck in his oesophagus (sp?). He had an x-ray. I would ask for one with it being plastic and an awkward shape! Definitely with him having stomach pains

Depends where you work but I'm a GP and if I refer for an X-ray it won't come back to me for a week - useless in this situation.
You said they advised you to go back to a&e if you're worried, that sounds entirely appropriate to me.
