An argument against a hunter?

My BIL (SIL DH) is a hunter. He spends THOUSANDS going to Scottish Isles, Norway, etc. to hunt animals. He pays people to track the deer (literally no idea what this means) and then he shoots it. I find it really sadistic.

Now, we are all meat eaters (except PIL as of recent) and I understand there's a bit of hypocrisy here. So I just would like to debate the topic.

From my perspective, shooting an animal for fun when the meat is readily available in a butcher/supermarket is WEIRD. You get joy/achievement/accomplishment out of hurting an animal? I would entirely understand if you needed it to survive or if the meat wasn't as available (i.e. people living in the middle of nowhere) but he does it purely for fun. He has said this.

Thing is, if I had to kill my own meat I probably wouldn't eat it. I could still eat fish, I don't feel much emotion towards a salmon (is that bad?) but I would struggle killing any animal. I think people who do it for a livelihood have to condition themselves and it is a necessary job that someone has to do. That is entirely different.

So what is your opinion on someone who kills animals such as deer/goat/other wildlife depending on country purely for fun?
(FWIW, he does eat the meat)

Deer hunting in this country is strictly controlled and for animal population control. If they can make money from it to help the population and maintain the environment for the animals how is that a bad thing? Confused

You ever seen how meat is killed at an abbatoire OP? Maybe learn where your meat is from before making such silly statements.

Also rabbits are vermin and are hunted and eaten across the whole of the UK. Are you really that sheltered?

My BIL in shoots for fun. The whole family do eat what he shoots (pheasants, pigeons and rabbits mostly) but he does it because he enjoys it. I don't have a problem with it. I don't need him to be crying while he reluctantly takes out thumper.

Any person who thinks that a "hunter" does so out of "bloodlust", as if on his/her way home he/she would stamp on a stray cat because he/she just loves to kill animals, has a misunderstanding of hunting as wide as the Grand Canyon.
There is a lot more to understand about hunting than some posters understand.

lljkk, I am vegetarian but I am not an animal rights extremist. I hate the taste of meat and the way it makes me feel. I don't think it is particularly healthy to eat it either unless you are paying for good organic meat.

I have always hated any sort of hunting or unnecessary killing of any living creature even insects

Karigan195 · 19/02/2019 09:16

If he eats the meat then it’s actually better for the animal than being a supermarket destined farmed animal.

Sorry on this occasion I side with the hunter but I have a strict policy that you only kill to eat. Pheasant hunting etc where they go into landfill just disgusts me.

mydogisthebest · 19/02/2019 09:17

OnlyaMan, but most people would not be able to kill an animal. My DH could not even kill a spider.

I can understand someone killing an animal if they were desperate for food although I am certain I couldn't but for enjoyment? Not normal at all

In my opinion, anyone who hunts for fun, and even pays to kill animals is a psychopath, end of

FlorencesHunger · 19/02/2019 09:46

I don't disagree with you op, the idea of getting a kick out of killing a living creature is horrible for me and your bil sounds self important and all round not nice but, and I don't like saying it but atleast he's getting his kicks in a humane and legal way and not torturing animals in any which way.

You don't have to like it or him but I don't think you can win this argument other than most people will agree his motivation of doing it isn't good compared to the original intention of what culling is for.

BejamNostalgia · 19/02/2019 09:53

I actually think if an animal has spent its life living freely and is then shot for food, that’s far better than a broiler chicken. The way pork is reared is pretty horrible too. Beef and lamb are a bit better but hunting is probably the least cruel in terms of quality of life.
