to avoid any company I see ‘gifting’ instagrammers

Recently discovered Linsdrabwell on insta. Doing interesting things with her house, has a good style v watchable decent woman. Then I see a huge pile of carrier bags she’s been given by a fairly well known company and I just think ooooh that’s where my money goes: these companies buying ads with instagrammers through generous lovely offerings. I’m not intending to single out Lins as she’s great it’s just a general point that I’m waking up to.

Did you see Panorama the other night? That was on this subject, and the number of "influencers" that aren't being entirely transparent. I don't do Instagram but do take any "celebrity" claims with a large pinch of salt.

YANBU to avoid a company for any reason you like. I find it odd though that you would only object to companies advertising through instagrammers and not through the myriad other ways they choose to.

It's a very common way of advertising now and no different at all to the product placement that used to be used on television (probably still is)

As long as an instagrammer is upfront about being gifted I see no issue, I watch a lot of the beauty ones and can see a PR gift straight away, no problem if they are up front and honest,if not i unfollow

It's a bit naive not to realise this is a very standard marketing tool

PETRONELLAS · 14/02/2019 15:03

Yes yes I know it’s common and more upfront than product placement which has stricter guidelines. Wasn’t being naive, thanks. Will give Panorama a look, thanks too.

How would it make you unreasonable not to follow accounts you don’t want to?

Just.... don’t follow them.....

Advertising has been around for a long time. YABU to suddenly take offence to it on Instagram.
