I have a period. Cry me a river. God help me.
But AIBU to not fucking be able to cope with the pain?
Why the fuck do we need to take Nurofen and Paracetamol every fucking month?
Who the fuck died and decided ok, let's torture women for the rest of their lives.
I can't figure out why it could be biologically acceptable.
Bare with me. I'm in pain. Ignore my rantings.

I can't take oral contraceptives as I've previously had a pulmonary embolism (blood clot on lung).
I used to have the Mirena coil and it made me suicidal.

So I'm sort of stuck.

Always had terrible period pain, i simply cease to function. I had a csec so dont know what labour's like but it doesnt surprise me to hear its similar! Because i get FELLED by period pain i assumed i had a low pain threshold, but then i was attacked by a bull and had surgery, incl. Wound mopped out with iodine initially, and didnt feel a thing, with no painkillers throughout! So, maybe a high threshold then Grin

I've had bloodtests - 'biochemically perfect'
Ovary scan - beautiful ovaries

I too wonder how this went down in the stone age.

panticus · 14/02/2019 07:17

I'm curious - can't you get period pain medication over the counter in the UK?

Nurofen and paracetamol do sweet f all for me - Naproxen is the only thing that works. That's readily available in Aus and I'd be filthy if I had to get a prescription for it!

ScabbyHorse · 14/02/2019 07:18

Try sipping hot water....it reallyhelps...and hot water bottles too, even if you're at work.

HopeIsNotAStrategy · 14/02/2019 07:19

If you are cramping have a nip of brandy. Seriously, it sorts it out inside ten minutes. This little gem goes right at the top of the list of Things I Wish I’d Known Twenty years Earlier. 💐

Powerbunting · 14/02/2019 07:23

Panticus yes you can. Often branded as period pain relief. Eg feminax ultra or boots period pain relief.

I think op has taken pain relief. It helps somewhat. But is annoyed at the need to take it because her other health issues or side effects prevent her from having some of the other treatment options. She doesn't think she's got anything "wrong" or pathological as such. She's just fed up of having monthly pain. Which I can empathise with right now

If I've read correctly anyway.

LellyMcKelly · 14/02/2019 07:26

Go and see your GP. I had terrible pain for years only to find out I had fibroids which were causing it. Women can also take the pill without a break which will stop them too, and your doctor might suggest that, but it does no harm to get yourself checked over.

SleeplessInc · 14/02/2019 07:31

It me be ‘just period pain’ but that doesn’t mean you have to just put up with it.

I was prescribed Mefanic acid for excessive period pain, helped loads. You shouldn’t have to suffer.

But as previous posts have said you should get checked for problems such as endometriosis just to rule them out. No prizes for suffering in silence!

Hope it gets better.

Hi op. I used to have awful periods, really painful
Really clotty, quite dark. Painkillers I was taking nurofen max stength and begging for the 4 hrs to be up so I could take the next lot.
Now I never mentioned this to a doctor as I assumed they were just like that. For fertility related issues I ended up attending acupuncture (I know, I know, I was desperate though and it gets really good feedback by some people). Anyway long story short, she assured me that what I was experiencing was NOT normal and that there were definitely things she could do to help.
I took a max strength b vitamin tablet and she did some acupuncture magic to me for a few weeks. Next period I had was what I would consider to be light (as opposed to the 5-7 days massacre level bleeding from above), cherry red, no clots and not very painful at all. In fact it has helped me remove my painkiller habit entirely. So much so that in our house now when someone needs a painkiller they are very hard to find, whereas they used to be dotted around the place everywhere.
All I am trying to say is don't accept this as your lot in life. Either through gp or alternatives if for 3-4 days a month you could genuinely do someone an injury because you are in so much pain that is not ok.
Btw - my sister had worse periods then me. She couldn't afford acupuncture so just did the b vitamin complex and it has made a huge difference to her too.
I hope that you are starting to feel a bit better for this month.

adaline · 14/02/2019 07:40

Lots of women have insanely horrible period pains without it being endometriosis or cysts. We’re just unlucky and it’s biological.

Just because you’ve never experienced period pains that stop you dead in your tracks or leave you breathless doesn’t mean it’s not normal

Yes, but OP has never been checked out so doesn't know that it's not those things. I suffered with painful periods for years before I found out what was wrong with me because so many people told me it was normal.

I've had periods that left me doubled over in pain, that have led to me passing out on the toilet and being sick it was so bad. But I was eventually convinced to get help and my life has been so much better since I found out the issue and got proper, targeted help.

Seeing the GP is an incredibly sensible option - even if turns out you "just" have painful periods at least you've done what you can to solve them!

adaline · 14/02/2019 07:42

Guess what. I still have heavy painful periods despite having a surgical intervention and when I told the gynae he just said ‘oh dear well it doesn’t work for everyone’

But again, the point is you tried to get help! Unfortunately heavy periods are a fact of life for some people but for others there's a reason behind it and it can be solved pretty much overnight in some cases.

Just because medical help didn't stop you being in pain doesn't mean it won't help someone else!

adaline · 14/02/2019 07:43

OP have you been investigated for things like cysts, fibroids or endometriosis at all? Thanks

labazsisgoingmad · 14/02/2019 07:52

until i had my hysterectomy i went through hell every month from the age of 13 flooding clotting and the pain was indescribable i even passed out several times from the agony of it

SaturdayNext · 14/02/2019 07:52

It doesn't sound "standard issue" at all, OP. Plenty of women go right through their reproductive life without being in the sort of pain that standard painkillers won't touch. It is worth getting checked out.

Aridane · 14/02/2019 07:54

Love NutElla's comment!

DameIfYouDo · 14/02/2019 07:54

No, I've never seen a gynae. I was referred but moved countries before the appointment. My biggest fear I suppose is being told 'there's nothing wrong with you, go home and stop complaining'. I know no professional would say that, but if they said there's nothing wrong, that's what I would hear.
I've read another post who may not have read, but I can not be prescribed the pill due to a history of having a blood clot. Think I'm due Nurofen again.

OP posts:
snowie01 · 14/02/2019 07:56

Is it really possible to take the pill all the time and just not have periods? This would be a life saver for me mine are so awful lately that it's making it so hard to go to work. I go but it's awful.

Powerbunting · 14/02/2019 07:58

DameIf but isn't that essentially the situation you are in now? So you lose nothing other than a bit of time finding out that the situation is just as you assume it is now.

But you might find out that there is something at the root that can be corrected

Yabbers · 14/02/2019 08:04

This isn’t normal period pain, you need help

Sigh.

Why can’t people look outside their own narrow world?

I’ve had painful and heavy periods right from the start. That’s 30 years. No, I don’t have endometriosis, or any other thing. Yes, I’ve been to the doctors, no they didn’t help. One GP said loftily, “oh you shouldn’t have any pain” and prescribed me a medication which made me feel more ill and didn’t stop the pain.

Some people have painful, heavy periods and it doesn’t mean there’s something wrong and it can be fixed, in my family it’s entirely normal.

Aridane · 14/02/2019 08:04

Sorry, no sympathy from me after reading your last post about not following through on the gynae referral. Now if GP had ignored your abnormally severe period pains and told you to suck it up, that would be shit. But you failing to help yourself and accept possible medical help, that's down to you

DharmaInitiativeLady · 14/02/2019 08:05

Had enough of my horrendous periods. Saw a gynae consultant the week before Christmas and had a hysterectomy second week in Jan. I'm 35. I feel amazing already.

I hear you.

Willow2017 · 14/02/2019 08:21

Yes it is normal! Yet another thread with women telling other women it never happened to me so it's not normal.

I Had that for years. Nothing else wrong no medical condition just bloody heavy long lasting extremely fecking painful periods.
Had a d&c, scans, tests and nada. Just my body hates me.

If you haven't experienced it dont presume that there has to be a reason for those who do. It doesn't mean we have endometriosis or anything else its just 'normal' for us and its awful.

Apart from really strong painkillers, sometimes even mefanamic acid didnt touch it, going on the pill etc theres nothing available for women and if you get an unsympathetic dr its worse. Luckily mine were ace.

I was sent to hosp by my GP once with suspected miscarriage as the 'contractions" my uterus was doing to expell period waste were so strong you could feel them on my abdomen.
Was told its just one of those things women sometimes have with periods.

I had time off work doubled up in agony and would be told by other women "just take a couple of nurophen that will sort you out." Oh yeah I never thought of that! 😠😠😠

It's crap and you have my sympathies op.

If you haven't been checked out op then do so it won't hurt and may help but if you have then badger your gp until they deal with it and give you proper analgesia. It's not good enough that you aren't getting proper pain killers that at least help a bit.

adaline · 14/02/2019 08:22

I can't take the pill either OP. But I did get prescribed non-hormonal tablets to lighten my flow which in turn practically eliminated my pain. I still need ibuprofen for the first day but after that I feel pretty much normal. It's been an absolute lifesaver for me.

I also have nothing "wrong" - I've had scans and all sorts but I just have heavy periods. Tranexamic acid absolutely changed my life. Honestly at this point, isn't it just worth trying it?

werideatdawn · 14/02/2019 08:23

Why do people still give this OP the time of day?! If it's not racist generalisations on tradesmen it's crying babies or periods. Everything is dire, no solution acceptable. Can't understand how the account is still active.

SoupDragon · 14/02/2019 08:25

Indeed.
