How on Earth are they 'racist' Hmm

OP posts:
Gilead · 13/02/2019 22:00

Because it has some of the history of golliwogs, you know racist images, dolls etc.

Gilead · 13/02/2019 22:01

Oh and it'll tell you about the Jim Crow laws, really quite important for understanding racism.

EwItsAHooman · 13/02/2019 22:03

I have no idea why you sent me that link?

Because it shows the origins of Golliwogs, they didn't originate in Egypt.

MysweetAudrina · 13/02/2019 22:06

Nearly all my shoes are black. If I stick a pair of googly eyes on a pair tomorrow and wear them out would I be considered racist?

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 13/02/2019 22:07

I'm not trying to cause trouble I just don't believe you.

Can you explain what 'PC racism' is please?

Gilead · 13/02/2019 22:08

Oh dear...

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 13/02/2019 22:08

@MysweetAudrina why don't you read some of the thread?

EwItsAHooman · 13/02/2019 22:10

Nearly all my shoes are black. If I stick a pair of googly eyes on a pair tomorrow and wear them out would I be considered racist?

Dunno.

I have a red t-shirt with a white circle on it. If I stick a swastika on it do you think I'd be considered racist?

Try reading the thread.

It's not about eyes on a shoe. It's about the style of face, with very specific features, placed on a black background. Once you've read it then Google blackface.

GlitterStick · 13/02/2019 22:21

@MySweeyAudrina no, because it'd just look like you'd stuck a pair of googly eyes on a pair of shoes Confused

dryingout · 13/02/2019 22:22

@EwItsAHooman FFS
What a rediculous statement

Chainormous · 13/02/2019 22:24

Is there so much as a shred of evidence to support the Egyptian Golliwog theory?

As for the shoes, it's a bit unfortunate but they do look very minstrel-esque.

Gilead · 13/02/2019 22:25

Ewit’s statement was not ridiculous. Rather they were trying to demonstrate the ridiculousness of Audrina’s statement.

EwItsAHooman · 13/02/2019 22:28

Ewit’s statement was not ridiculous. Rather they were trying to demonstrate the ridiculousness of Audrina’s statement.

Exactly that, thank you.

Besides, I wouldn't ruin a perfectly good t-shirt.

BabyDarlingDollfaceHoney · 13/02/2019 22:29

@macblank I really hope you don't call your neighbours pakis Shock just because they say it doesn't give you the right to.

Lots of minorities appropriate offensive slurs and use them... That is their prerogative to take back control of the word's meaning. It doesn't stop it from being an offensive slur if used by someone outside that culture. Gay people can call each other fags and black people can call each other nigger, that doesn't give me the right to use those words.

macblank · 13/02/2019 23:05

Calm down people!

Look, I grew up with understanding the Golliwog was an image on a pot of jam, and that later on, I learnt that it was meant to have come from Egypt. Not JUST ME, all the people of my generation n older, especially in the UK.

If the TRUTH, is that it was originally used for racism, then I'm sorry that's the case.

I grew up in middle class farming community or very small towns (under 10k population) most of my younger life, I never met a different coloured person until I was 14. His dad had come to England and our area for work. I knew the physics teacher didn't like him, but didn't understand why (I do now).

I didn't know a single non white person until I moved to the city and started a job in the call center. For 8 years we all worked together (about 6 of us, changed campaigns and stayed together no matter what). One of my earliest memories was zafrine introducing herself as a Paki. The only time I ever said the word was when SHE was joking about, and we'd all join in together... White, black, Indian, and of course Pakistani. None of us abused the other, and to.my knowledge no one was picked on.

I don't go around shouting it at random people... Never have, and never heard of it until I moved here.

I no longer work at the call center, due to a collapsing spine n neck, and mental health issues (some of it due to my childhood).

I've never intentionally been racist, as theres no need for it, especially now in this day n age, when we know right from wrong.

I will stick up for what is wrong, and the weak, as best I can, and I can't stand bullys (had enough of that as a kid bring in care). So.i don't use words to cause hurt, not intentionally, and if I still worked with the people, I'd be the first to go in n apologise to zaf n the others, if I thought I'd caused them upset..... That's who I am. I talk to.people the way they want to be talked to, and if someone says ... It's ok to call me this or that, I do, it's what they asked it said it was ok.

Don't go presuming that I'm racist or trying to say I e suffered in the same way. I was just trying to say, that pc racism exists too... Pc racism, is when an establishment block white people deliberately so they can definitely have minorities only. It's so they can tick a pc box to say they're doing the right thing or whatever reason.

I do t care what creed or religious background you are or come from, if ya treat me with respect, I'll treat you the same. I give everyone a chance to be a friend.... I'm a great believer in, to make friends, you must be friendly.

I hope that clears up any misunderstanding

Mmmhmmm · 13/02/2019 23:22

Very very ugly shoes.

SomethingOnce · 14/02/2019 00:09

Never have I seen such fugly footwear.

Lweji · 14/02/2019 00:48

Pc racism, is when an establishment block white people deliberately so they can definitely have minorities only. It's so they can tick a pc box to say they're doing the right thing or whatever reason.

It's not whatever reason or PC, and it's not blocking all white people and have minorities only.

Ringfencing quotas is meant to rebalance inequality and provide opportunities for those that tend to be excluded to have equal opportunities. Because white people tend to hire white people and men tend to hire men, etc
It's not reverse racism.
It's meant to enable minorities to access whatever is usually out of their fair reach, as well as to get majorities and minorities used to seeing those minorities in those roles. Because minorities (and women) often have to work and prove themselves above the majority (and men).

Gilead · 14/02/2019 00:51

PC Racism, otherwise known as fairness and balance.

GlitterStick · 14/02/2019 08:46

Just been falling down Google worm holes thanks to googling Jim Crow.
Had heard of "him", but didn't know was just a mocking character Blush
People really should read up more to educate themselves on racism

twattymctwatterson · 14/02/2019 10:45

@macblank I've worked in various call centre environments for 15 years. I would absolutely 100% be sacked for calling a colleague a Paki

macblank · 14/02/2019 10:56

Yes, but my friends ain't your friends.. it's quite easy to tell the difference! I never said, I randomly shouted it out, or called it her, it was private jokes amongst ourselves.

I only mentioned it, as one poster said, that they didn't think someone would like being called a Paki.

When you have food friends from all backgrounds, and you joke around, you do so with their.permission, and that's what WE did, and the word was only ever started by the girl.

Because your situation is different to mine, doesn't make mine wrong. Let's see who keeps this going by quoting that line!

Vixxxy · 14/02/2019 11:07

'Reverse racism' is a thing as much as 'misandry' is IMO.

Designers and Perry knew what they were doing, and achieved that goal. People are talking, no publicity is bad, etc etc.

EwItsAHooman · 14/02/2019 11:13

When you have food friends from all backgrounds, and you joke around, you do so with their.permission

I do have friends from all backgrounds but I don't trot them out like trophies to prove my non-registered credentials. "Racist? Moi? No, no, please observe my many ethnic friends and behold the racial slurs we jokingly use against one another...."

EwItsAHooman · 14/02/2019 11:14

non-registered = non-racist
