How on Earth are they 'racist' Hmm

OP posts:
GlitterStick · 13/02/2019 17:13

@WarpedGalaxy was beginning to think it was just me - how can anyone not see blackface looking at those shoes? Confused

SheWoreBlueVelvet · 13/02/2019 17:18

Would they be racist with brown eyes? Or would the red lips still attract comments about caricaturing black women.

BeekyChitch · 13/02/2019 17:20

I actually really liked the Gucci top with the balaclava face. If there were many different coloured versions and black was one of the colour options available, I wonder, would it still be seen as racist?

RedPanda2 · 13/02/2019 17:21

It's not up to you to decide what's racist if you're white.

ThunderStorms · 13/02/2019 17:31

It's not up to you to decide what's racist if you're white.

Because white people never experience racism? I know what you mean, but that’s a dangerous statement.

macblank · 13/02/2019 17:57

IT IS EXACTLY THE POINT

Because a word is turned racist it doesn't mean the item is.

Are you saying, faggots are homophobic, because SOME people use the word in a homophobic manner. I better go tell Brains, and make sure they don't sell anymore of their homophobic food!

It is a huge difference.

You were saying they were racist... They're NOT. That is a big point, especially when you're wrong.

Lweji · 13/02/2019 18:00

As pointed out by some, it's different if you look at the shoes together and see the "logic" and if someone only wears the black ones.

Together, gets a Hmm.
Only the black ones, get a Shock.

Women wouldn't be wearing them as a collection, so....

VladmirsPoutine · 13/02/2019 18:03

I bloody hate these type of mumsnet threads in which people try to justify what is and isn't racism then someone at page 14 will pop along to say that their great great granny gave them a golliwog doll which they cherish to this day and then someone else comes along to say well 'white people experience racism too'. It's so fucking tedious and I'm even half white.

macblank · 13/02/2019 18:05

I beg your pardon.

Racism works both ways, way more times than you think about. I've suffered from PC racism, where I can't do something or apply for stuff, because I'm white.

I'm not meaning to stir up a whole argument or meaning to cause offence to those that have suffered due to their skin colour, which I have always been against.

I'm just saying that sometimes being white is the wrong colour. So to say we can call something racist cos Im white, is soo wrong... Borderline racist in-of-itself (never sure how to do that one, or is it.... In of itself??)

BabyDarlingDollfaceHoney · 13/02/2019 18:07

@RedPanda2 I do think that statement is a bit divisive and insulting. Racism isn't only about a gut feeling. It can be an intellectual reaction based on history. White people might not feel the result of racism but they can identify it.

BabyDarlingDollfaceHoney · 13/02/2019 18:10

@macblank yes racism against people of all races does exist... But it doesn't compare to the institutionalised and pervasive discrimination that black people face.

ForalltheSaints · 13/02/2019 18:11

They do look like Black and White Minstrels to me, so are.

Katy Perry married Russell Brand, so expecting taste from her, racist or not, is unlikely.

MiniPharm · 13/02/2019 18:13

@CuriousAboutSamphire - spot on

RedPanda2 · 13/02/2019 18:13

No, racism does not work both ways. Reverse racism is not a thing, especially in the UK and America. Google is your friend.

dryingout · 13/02/2019 18:14

Also racist to people with gold faces too, don't forget that

Gilead · 13/02/2019 18:15

Of course they're bloody racist.

Racism works both ways, way more times than you think about. I've suffered from PC racism, where I can't do something or apply for stuff, because I'm white.
Bullshit. Go do some reading.

dryingout · 13/02/2019 18:16

Will this argument be had every time something with a face on is designed in black?

Would this argument had happened if it was just a face on blue or white or red?

Does this mean that faces are ok on goods so long as it's not black or are all faces going to stir up a racist argument?

Chimmychunga · 13/02/2019 18:17

They are in all colours - green, blue, red. They have only pictured the black and beige shoes together to spark controversy.

dryingout · 13/02/2019 18:18

So non issue then?

It's like the trolling of the advertising / media world

macblank · 13/02/2019 18:23

Oh, you know my life do you?

Stupid fker. I don't need to read, to know what I have gone through. I've been told... Sorry but we need to get more people from minorities. I don't need to look at anything.

I also remember being told for one job... Sorry mate, but you'll struggle to get any waitering jobs, cos they're looking for young pretty women. ... That was the 90s, now it seems anyone can be a waiter.

Gilead · 13/02/2019 18:23

Will this argument be had every time something with a face on is designed in black?
Oh for goodness sake, look at it. It's a minstrel/golllywog face. Go on try to justify it...

GlitterStick · 13/02/2019 18:25

There's some weird comments on here tonight.
Exactly @Gilead

User298895613 · 13/02/2019 18:27

They made them in many colours - blue, red, nude, gold, green and black (and a few more I think). Why can't they have the black ones? So weird and ridiculous! I think it would have been more racist to exclude the black shoes, given every other colour was represented!

twattymctwatterson · 13/02/2019 18:29

Can't we at least agree that they're fucking hideous?

GlitterStick · 13/02/2019 18:30

Again, the other colours don't have years of mocking and the oppression/ history behind them, do they.
Unless smurfs or Kermit's ancestors suffered the same and I missed it?
Sorry to be flippant but some of these comments are daft.
