Hi everyone,

I put my wedding dress that I no longer want on gumtree yesterday. Last night I had someone asking do I still have the wedding dress. I replied yes and would they like to come and see it and got this reply this morning... as it said I would have the funds before sending I did think it was genuine, however a part of me thinks it sounds like a scam!

What do you think? And should I reply?

My daughter had the exact same wording from a “buyer” on Gumtree a few weeks back when she was selling her car!

Must say such a caring person.
Buying a surprise wedding dress (just exactly what every bride wants to be a surprise) whilst recovering from heart surgery.

They should have just put in bold at the top This is a scam

I sold a corner sofa on gumtree a couple of years ago (first time using gumtree) and nearly got caught out by something very similar! It's a scam!

abbsisspartacus · 13/02/2019 18:13

Pay pal gift only that way they cant ask for it back

NutRoastNancy · 13/02/2019 18:14

Do not engage any further a had such a similar email on gum tree a few days ago.

Most definitely some sort of scam.

Thank you for your quick response! please consider it sold kindly remove the ad as i am willing to pay your full asking price because i need to buy it for my cousin asap due because they need some stuff for their new apartment kindly inform if you have other items for sale, i have read through the advert and i'm totally satisfied with it,sadly i would not be able to come personally to collect due to my hearing loss and I'm just recovering from heart surgery so I'm home-bound.I have a courier agent that would help me to pick it up at your preferred location after you have received your money and i'll pay you via PayPal that is attach to my bank account as that is the only secure form of payment that I have access to right now. Where is the pick up location so that i can inform the courier agent about it now?

caughtinanet · 13/02/2019 19:11

Subis - it probably depends what it is but maybe a bankers draft that you take to the bank with the buyer so you know it's not fake and hand the thing over there if possible.

We were selling our caravan 5 years ago in gumtree and similar message appeared about a courier with a sad story attached.

This scam has been around for a long time but it's good it's not going to get you or anyone else reading this thread!

ellesbellesxxx · 13/02/2019 21:36

My friend had almost the same email through gumtree for a pram! She had a fake PayPal email come (money wasn’t in her account) asking her to pay £200 at western union for courier

Username198 · 13/02/2019 21:44

This is how I would love to deal with scammers.

I had this about 10 years ago on there when selling my wedding dress. I nearly fell for it, thankfully I quickly realised.

Happyinheels · 13/02/2019 21:53

It's a Scam. I had an email with the exact same excuse, can't collect due to heart surgery and as such they were arranging for a courier to collect. Then they told me they had 'wired' nearly £500 to my account from some union bank or something. They got very rude and aggressive with me and threatened legal action. I pressed the PayPal link in the email and emailed 'Paypal' asking for advice. To which 'Paypal' replied telling me I had to honour the transaction. I can't remember the specific details but it isn't so much about your goods, it's about the apparent wire transfer of funds. I totally freaked out and then went through the actual Paypal website and asked for advice and they said it was a scam.
