Hi everyone,

I put my wedding dress that I no longer want on gumtree yesterday. Last night I had someone asking do I still have the wedding dress. I replied yes and would they like to come and see it and got this reply this morning... as it said I would have the funds before sending I did think it was genuine, however a part of me thinks it sounds like a scam!

What do you think? And should I reply?

Another voice saying well known scam. It’s quite common with expensive items and things like cars. If you google you will find hundreds of these with almost exactly the same wording.
They wouldn’t have accepted a bank transfer and would have pushed for PayPal then if you insisted just stopped replying.

JonSlow · 13/02/2019 10:05

Reply - with the address of your local police station. See if they are stupid enough to send the “courier” there!

Snowflakes1122 · 13/02/2019 10:05

Definitely a scam!

Never ever let a buyer arrange a courier. And the wording is common in this the yo-yo for scam artists to use.

Snowflakes1122 · 13/02/2019 10:06

Photo, not yoyo. Stupid phone Confused

Next time you're unsure OP (and others) it's worth copying and pasting some of the message into google to see if these well known scams come up.

For example, if you google

great, please consider it sold and remove the adverts online as i am willing to pay your asking price i need to buy it for my cousin asap as a surprise gift

the top results all show similar messages and warnings about this scam

charlotte2029 · 13/02/2019 10:08

Hi... My daughter had an almost identical thing happen to her last week. She is selling her car. I contacted PayPal. Its definitely a scam!... Avoid avoid avoid

blueshoes · 13/02/2019 10:08

"earn your trust" screams red flag. Like saying there is no treasure buried here - of course there is.

Ask for cash on collection. Bet you won't hear from from this recovering heart surgery patient again.

Blueuggboots · 13/02/2019 10:10

I had this when I tried to sell mine. They wanted me to launder money through my account.

EatingElephantsIsCF · 13/02/2019 10:10

Do not reply or tell them it is sold to someone just like them .

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 13/02/2019 10:11

Exactly "May Well". Nowhere did I say.
This isnt a scam.

ChrisPrattsFace · 13/02/2019 10:13

Scam. I’ve has almost word for word identical replies for things on eBay!

Hushnownobodycares · 13/02/2019 10:14

Scammity scam.

Tell them cold hard cash straight into your hot and sweaty or no can do.

MostlyBoastly · 13/02/2019 10:15

I love the police station idea!

Sparklesocks · 13/02/2019 10:18

Also when you think about it a wedding dress is an odd ‘surprise gift’, I can’t think of many brides who would want a wedding dress they hadn’t even seen a picture of 😉

spiderlight · 13/02/2019 10:18

I've seen that exact phrasing "courier" agent before. Definitely a scam. without proof of delivery they'll say they never received it and PayPal will refund them.

LipstickTaserrr · 13/02/2019 10:18

I've had a very similar message when selling a dining table and chairs. Disgusting the amount of scammers around Angry

ShirleyPhallus · 13/02/2019 10:18

I can’t believe that anyone is naive enough to think this wouldn’t be a scam Confused

Same with the “is my bank really trying to contact me to refund me thousands of pounds” posts that pop up on MN

RelaisBlu · 13/02/2019 10:19

I need to buy it for my cousin asap as a surprise gift

You don't have to read any further than this to know it's a scam - no part of this sentence rings true

iknowimcoming · 13/02/2019 10:20

Honestly my cousins are so sick of me buying them surprise wedding dress presents but I just can't help myself, do it all the time lol! Wink

IceRebel · 13/02/2019 10:23

The thing I love most about this scam is that they can't collect due to hearing loss oh and that other thing recovering from heart surgery, pretty sure heart surgery is a more convincing reason than hearing loss yet it's mentioned as almost an after thought. Wink

SileneOliveira · 13/02/2019 10:24

Reply with "what part of cash only don't you understand?"

Whitney168 · 13/02/2019 10:26

Yes definite scam, it couldn't be any more scammy if it tried

This ...

I always wonder how on earth these things make the scammers any money as they're so obvious, but this thread makes that a bit clearer.

MostlyBoastly · 13/02/2019 10:27

“I think there’s been some kind of misunderstanding due to your hearing loss. Let me speak up. CASH ONLY, COCKWOMBLE.”

MrsWillGardner · 13/02/2019 10:28

“Courier agent” usually means someone who wi collect it in their car, and then send it to family/friends abroad. I had this with something I sold once in eBay and lo and behold, after it was collected by the “courier agent”, the “buyer” said they’d not received it. It was ok in the end but if I’d received the message you’ve got, I’d never respond back.

mothertruck3r · 13/02/2019 10:28

It's definitely a scam. Once she pays you she will pretend she never received the dress and file a claim with Paypal who will refund her (and she will still have the dress) as Paypal only accept very specific proof of delivery/tracking, but she is sending her own "courier" and any receipt they give you won't be valid for Paypal.
