To ask for horror film recommendations for my 10 year old

Dd has been asking to watch a horror film. She's been quite sensitive in the past so I don't want to let her watch anything too horrible, and I think it's quite a bit down to people in her class talking about things they've watched.

They are also working on horror stories in school. She's also asked to watch bird box.

Does anyone have any ideas of films I can let her see that are a bit scary (enough that she feels she's watched a horror film and give her a bit of 'street cred') but not enough to terrify her?

Just don’t, would be my advice.

M0reGinPlease · 13/02/2019 06:53

No, no, no, no, no. This is asking for a whole heap of trouble.

Suziepoozie · 13/02/2019 06:54

The Others. I hate horror films but I watched it about that age and loved it - more spooky than horror but absolutely brilliant

Amanduh · 13/02/2019 06:54

Horror films aren’t for ten year olds.

Fishcakey · 13/02/2019 06:54

Good old fashioned black and white ones! I loved them as a kid. The classics are the best and not scary at all.

echt · 13/02/2019 06:55

Coraline has some moments, but OK for her age.

GoGoGadgetGin · 13/02/2019 06:55

How about 'goosebumps' or the 'are you afraid of the dark' TV programmes?

Why on earth would you even be considering this?

HoraceCope · 13/02/2019 06:56

At 10?
mind boggles
Just had a look on netflix for you:
Monster House
Gnome Alone
The Witches
All Hallows Eve

Bird Box is a 15

ChaosTrulyReigns · 13/02/2019 06:57

It's very strange on here this morning.

JenniferJareau · 13/02/2019 06:58

YABU. No 10 year old needs to see a horror film. You'll find someone at school put her up to this.

HoraceCope · 13/02/2019 07:00

Also
The Babysitter
Little Lunch, Halloween horror story

SaucyJack · 13/02/2019 07:01

The Others is fine for her age, but still spooky enough to class as a horror film.

And ignore the weirdos above. Kids grow up. They want to try new things. You can parent your kid and still let them watch stuff that isn’t Paw Patrol.

SnowdropFox · 13/02/2019 07:02

Watership down Should be scary enough!

birdiewoof · 13/02/2019 07:03

Wtf Hmm

Iggly · 13/02/2019 07:05

She’s 10?? Unnecessary.

I doubt she’s doing full on horror at school.

ProfYaffle · 13/02/2019 07:05

My dc have always loved spooky/scary stuff from being young. I'd suggest Coraline, Nightmare before Christmas, Frankenweenie, Paranorman and Hotel Transylvania. Lost Boys is also OK and the suggestion of old Horror films is quite good. Carry on Screaming is one my dc unexpectedly enjoyed.

Thecreosotekid · 13/02/2019 07:08

One of the only ones I can think of is ‘The Others’. But I don’t think a sensitive 10 year old (or indeed a not very sensitive one) would benefit from watching any horror/paranormal film. If it’s about street cred then she might well ask for an alcoholic drink, a nose piercing or a spliff before long. Sometimes we have to offset their desire to fit in, be seen as cool and street, with the fact that they’re children and some things are inappropriate and/or potentially mentally or physically damaging.

Arachnophobia
The people under the stairs

anniehm · 13/02/2019 07:16

The 1950's ones are really tame, my kids loved classic horror at hat age, a few jumpy bits but mostly they found it funny

Iused2BanOptimist · 13/02/2019 07:20

I loved reading horror stories at that age. Get her to read some, maybe together and she can talk about it with her friends.
The Birds is a Daphne du Maurier short story. She might enjoy the other short stories in the book. She might feel brave enough to watch the film after reading it.
The Fly is another short story I remember reading.

HappyPunky · 13/02/2019 07:21

Shaun of the dead? There are a couple of jumpy bits but it's mostly comedy.

JuneFromBethesda · 13/02/2019 07:22

I found The Others terrifying, and I was in my 20s when I saw it.

Anyway, the obvious answer is forget ‘street cred’, 10 is too young. I have a daughter the same age and there is NO WAY she would be watching a horror film of any description.

Cheeeeislifenow · 13/02/2019 07:22

For your sensitive ten year old?
None .
