To ask for horror film recommendations for my 10 year old

Dd has been asking to watch a horror film. She's been quite sensitive in the past so I don't want to let her watch anything too horrible, and I think it's quite a bit down to people in her class talking about things they've watched.

They are also working on horror stories in school. She's also asked to watch bird box.

Does anyone have any ideas of films I can let her see that are a bit scary (enough that she feels she's watched a horror film and give her a bit of 'street cred') but not enough to terrify her?

I don't know thebadplace

Donald trump is in gremlins 2 and the Ops dd is only 10.

Jennifer124 · 13/02/2019 08:35

She's been asking for ages and I keep trying to putt her off. I'm a total wuss and won't watch any horror (which is why I'm asking on here rather than going from my own knowledge)

I don't think there's any harm letting her watch some scary (For kids) films.

I'd also rather films than books for now add I can watch with her, and it's done in one sitting rather than her reading on her own every night and getting scared on her own.

I love scary films and The others was properly creepy! My friend is still haunted by Lost Boys and vampires after watching it as a child.

I was allowed to watch horror films at this age my sister let me watch amytiville! As a teen I watched loads and nothing affected me: they play on my mind far worse now as an adult. However I wasn't anxious at all.

In hindsight though as an adult I would be a lot more cautious on what children watch especially if easily scared.

Palegreenstars · 13/02/2019 08:41

BBFC let’s you look up the film you want to watch and shares details about any scarey bits etc. It’s really helpful in determining which 12a’s are appropriate for over 8s.

Nothing beats watching yourself to judge first though.

Nothing wrong with educating kids with the classics at the right time.

Check Out the 2009 version of The Hole. Kids find a hole in their garage. It’s great

angieloumc · 13/02/2019 08:41

But just because they don't want their kids to watch horror doesn't make them 'weirdos'! Not does it make a parent a 'weirdo' to let them watch a carefully chosen horror.
My DD does watch horrors occasionally but Coraline DID scare her, other films don't. Though at a friends house when aged only 11 they watched Drag Me To Hell, she couldn't sleep that night at all then the next night at home I could hear her singing '10 Green Bottles' to herself, I went in and she told me she'd watched a 'terrifying film' and was singing as a distraction! Not funny at the time but a funny story now we like to tell 🙂

Meralia · 13/02/2019 08:43

The Watcher in the Woods , (1980, with Bette Davies) it’s a PG but quite creepy.

angieloumc · 13/02/2019 08:44

Didn't realise The Others was only a 12, apologies.

PsychedelicSheep · 13/02/2019 08:52

My 12 year old loves horror, I let her watch any 15 she wants but no 18s. We tend to watch them together so I can contextualise if needed but I know she watches them with her friends too, as did I at her age!

Not a fan of it myself but Poltergeist is a tame one to start with maybe?

Also second The Lost Boys, although my kids found it boring, heathens Hmm

JacquesHammer · 13/02/2019 08:56

My 12 year old has always loved horror, she was reading Dracula at 9, moved onto The Woman in Black by 10.

However I was very careful with what she watched. She watched The Others aged 11 and loved it. Goosebumps went down really well.

If your daughter is a big reader, mine absolutely LOVED Point Horror Grin (but then so do I!)

PsychedelicSheep · 13/02/2019 08:58

A lot 90s horror is good for teens:

Scream, Candyman, Final Destination, The Faculty, The Craft just off the top of my head.

Mydietstartstomorrow · 13/02/2019 08:59

Can't actually believe someone thought Se7en would be appropriate for a 10 year old?! My 12 year old loved The sixth sense

goldengummybear · 13/02/2019 09:00

Dr Who is written with an 8 year old audience in mind but some episodes are scary than others so I'd watch before hand.

ShatnersWig · 13/02/2019 09:02

You're the second person to post this. And if you actually READ the posting where that suggestion made, you can quite clearly see they are not being serious.

Goposie · 13/02/2019 09:05

The house with the clock in the walls is by the same director as hostel and is really scary and grim

toomuchtoolittle · 13/02/2019 09:05

The woman in black

torthecatlady · 13/02/2019 09:09

I remember watching signs when I around that age. It's not too scary.

torthecatlady · 13/02/2019 09:10

IMO the woman in black, although it is a 12, is rather scary and wouldn't recommend a 10 year old watch it.

JaneJeffer · 13/02/2019 09:15
This frightened the life out of me when I was that age.
Iused2BanOptimist · 13/02/2019 09:15

Jaws??* I was a teenager when I saw that. It has ruined sea swimming 🏊‍♀️ for me for life. Even in a lake in the UK I fear what might be in the deep....

Please OP. Don't let her watch it.

BishopBrennansArse · 13/02/2019 09:18

For a contemporary one The House with a Clock in its Walls is supposed to be kid friendly but I've yet to see it myself.

BlueMerchant · 13/02/2019 09:19

Agree with House With Clock in it's Walls and Goosebumps films. They are atmospheric without being OTT. As a 10/11 year old I watched IT. It started a love of all things horror for me.

UtterlyDesperate · 13/02/2019 09:25

@Meralia I came on to say Watcher in the Woods too! I found it the right side of frightening as a child - lots of tension and scary bits, but ultimately everything is OK.

peachescariad · 13/02/2019 09:36

Coraline

SaucyJack · 13/02/2019 09:40

“But just because they don't want their kids to watch horror doesn't make them 'weirdos'! Not does it make a parent a 'weirdo' to let them watch a carefully chosen horror.“

Are you being deliberately obtuse?

The OP has asked for age-appropriate horror films because her daughter wants to watch one.

That’s the whole point of this thread.

My earlier comment (which you seem to have taken unnnecessarily personally) was aimed at a PP who suggested that you can’t be a proper parent if you would allow your growing child to watch something with a more mature content than a cartoon.

And that’s bollocks. There are a great many films out there which are enjoyably scary- without being traumatic- as this thread shows.

Cheeeeislifenow · 13/02/2019 09:40

Some movies mentioned bas horror are not horror movies.
Jurassic Park is not a Horror movie in my mind.
Neither is goosebumps or Coraline or labyrinth.
Horror to me is the ring the fridge or the excorcist.
The woman in black is rated 12?
I found that very Cary and I'm pretty Hardy but ghost children scare the shit out of me.
