To ask for horror film recommendations for my 10 year old

Dd has been asking to watch a horror film. She's been quite sensitive in the past so I don't want to let her watch anything too horrible, and I think it's quite a bit down to people in her class talking about things they've watched.

They are also working on horror stories in school. She's also asked to watch bird box.

Does anyone have any ideas of films I can let her see that are a bit scary (enough that she feels she's watched a horror film and give her a bit of 'street cred') but not enough to terrify her?

OP posts:

Frankenstein had my DD in tears all the way through. We couldn't leave the cinema as we had a group of kids with us for her birthday. She was sad that the dog died.

I used to love B movies at that age. I remember a particularly good one about giant ants called "Them!". . Brilliant.

Fowles94 · 13/02/2019 16:39

If she's sensitive I wouldn't bother. Maybe something jumpy like jaws instead.

Enb76 · 13/02/2019 16:41

Or, another of my favourites, Little Shop of Horrors

thesnapandfartisinfallible · 13/02/2019 16:58

The Others? IT? Poltergiest? Terminator? I had a soft spot for Scream when I was about 11. My first ever scary film was Poltergiest but Scream was the first slasher film I saw and it's so bad, it's funny but I still have a nostalgic fondness for it.

Paranorman. Brilliant horror for ten year olds.

Also Frankenweenie, Monster House and Casper

Wouldn't call Miss Periquine (not sure how to spell it) horror really .

OP I watched Hammer Horrors at 10 and they didn't scare me much but they might be enough for your daughter to handle ? Or Hammer House of Horror ? They are on YouTube I believe and are in episode format . The one with Dina Dors is a classic.

As others have said, though Woman in Black is a 12A I, a 50 something, when watching that some years ago was scared of that. I was surprised at myself for that Smile

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 13/02/2019 20:15

Also, OP, and I am definitely showing my age.

Audrey Rose . Its on YouTube , has a very young Anthony Hopkins in it, and I loved it . Book and movie . That is also on YouTube . No I don't work for them Smile

No way if she’s sensitive. At that age horror films are The Nightmare Before Christmas.

ForalltheSaints · 13/02/2019 20:25

A speech by Boris Johnson is a scary thought.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 13/02/2019 20:28

Carry on screaming - if that doesn’t put her off horror films for ever...!

AuntieFesterAdams · 13/02/2019 21:52

Creeped out (Cbbc programme)episodes are good without being too scary.
The Haunting Hour- also designed for kids with enough of a 'scare factor' to entertain but not give nightmares.

tor8181 · 13/02/2019 23:25

try goosebumps(netflix) or are you afraid of the dark(all on youtube)

Bryjam · 13/02/2019 23:27

You are seriously asking for tips on which horror movie to show a sensitive 10 year old?

JasperKarat · 13/02/2019 23:34

The house with a clock in the walls is Pg, hocus pocus , ghost busters or Casper? I might be showing my age a bit...

JasperKarat · 13/02/2019 23:37

Oh definitely Gremlins!

Lightofday · 13/02/2019 23:57

10 is really too young. But films like Predator maybe? Its gory but it doesn't have ghosties. As a kid I could watch a bit of gore/slashers but nothing with ghosts or paranormal (or they wont sleep) Ummm...maybe the scream films? ...still a bit of a risk though. I don't think I'd let a kid anywhere near horror until 12/13 at least.

Other posibilities tho:
Dorian Grey
The witches (not adult horror but it rocks)
Any 15rated wearwolf/vampire stuff

Basically just no ghost stuff.

FluffyMunchkin · 14/02/2019 00:22

Sleepy Hollow
Young Frankenstein
Gremlins
The Addams Family
Coraline
The Nightmare Before Christmas
Jaws

Arnoldillo · 14/02/2019 00:28

Jaws is quite graphic at the end when (SPOILER) you see old sharkie chomping down on the guy's legs and blood coming out of his mouth and stuff. Ok so the special effects are ropey but still. I think times have changed since it was marketed as a family summer blockbuster.

radishingravish · 14/02/2019 00:52

When I was 12 I went to the cinema to see 'The Village'. Not really a horror film, more just creepy/weird. I hated anything scary but all my friends were going and kept talking about how scary it was going to be beforehand, so I was terrified going in. But it wasn't scary at all.

Knackeredmommy · 14/02/2019 01:22

I think some of the kid movies are scary! Peregrine, Goosebumps, the witches. Please don't start her on adult ones yet, they really do play on the mind. Especially if she's sensitive,

Knackeredmommy · 14/02/2019 01:24

I watched Jaws as a kid, the music makes me feel ill. I was terrified
