Vegetarian Sunday lunch

(I know IABU because I’m posting for traffic, sorry)

Does anyone have any suggestions for a veggie alternative to Sunday lunch?

I’ve been a vegetarian for a couple of years and don’t miss meat at all, but I don’t feel like I’ve ever found a good alternative to that lovely, cosy Sunday lunch feeling you get with a roast.

I don’t really like meat substitutes like quorn (but tofu is ok).

Any ideas for something meat free that has that special Sunday feel to it?

Thanks in advance!

I say this every time, but I love a good nut roast and all the trimmings. Very aware that this is not everyone's cup of tea though.

I’ve never actually tried a nut roast! I really must, had sort of forgotten they existed. Thanks for the reminder!

Cauliflower and broccoli cheese bake

Baked butternut squash or pumpkin

Root veg dauphinoise type thing?..

Could make a veggie toad in the hole.

Traveler001 · 12/02/2019 15:34

Pie? There’s so many vegetarian versions. In Aldi they do a cauliflower cheese pie, it’s in the fridge with the quiche/pies/sausage rolls etc.

Mushroom wellington?

sweeneytoddsrazor · 12/02/2019 15:35

Nut roast is lovely. I dont like a lot of meat substitutes but I do like Linda McCartney sausage with red onion so use them for toad in the hole. Love a nice warming cheese and potato pie with lots of veg. There are loads of recipes on line for things like veg wellington which dont use meat substitutes.

I regularly have a veg carvery - all the veg without the meat, loads of gravy helps and cauliflower cheese!

RiverTam · 12/02/2019 15:37

we did this onion tart for our Christmas lunch, was yummy!

AtLeastThreeDrinks · 12/02/2019 15:46

I just skip the meat–veg and sauce options are my fave part of a roast! Saying that, nut roasts can be delicious if you want something extra. And make your veggie gravy with red wine for depth.

Thanks so much, loads of amazing suggestions!

I normally do everything bar the meat, but put loads of effort into making a vegetarian stuffing as the main dish. Even a packet of cheap Paxo can be padded out with thing like chopped nuts, chopped red onion, pulses etc.

Can't go wrong with any kind of veg/pasta bake as a meat substitute too.

I noticed that Tesco are doing some jackfruit vacuum packs at the moment too. They're £2, and look as though they only serve 1, but I imagine they might do the trick as well.

I'm not a veggie but I adore vegetarian wellington.

SaucyJack · 12/02/2019 15:54

I love any sort of pastry/cheese/caramelised onion combo.

doIreallyneedto · 12/02/2019 15:55

Mushroom pate en croute

goat's cheese and beetroot parcels

Babdoc · 12/02/2019 16:00

DD is vegetarian and she makes quite convincing “pulled pork” out of jackfruit with various spices and flavourings added. You could then do all the accompanying veg for a normal roast with some vegetarian gravy.
Alternatively, go to a Toby Carvery - any meat eating friends/family can have the roasts while you tuck into the not bad vegetarian menu, along with assorted veg or salad from the buffet.

Vegetarian haggis is absolutely DELICIOUS.

GahWhatever · 12/02/2019 16:04

I used to make a loaf with spaghetti in that was essentially sage and onion, pasta and nuts (a biy more complicated than that but was so sage and oniony that veggie friends thought I was tricking them into chicken).
As long as you make sure the roasties aren't made with animal fats and the cauli cheese is veggie a roast dinner is one of the easiest things to make veggie I think!

CalmDownPacino · 12/02/2019 16:06

Nut roast for me. M&S do one with almonds, pecans and a red wine & thyme gravy. It is freakin' LUSH Grin

Greyhound22 · 12/02/2019 16:07

Sainsbury's do a really lovely cheese and vegetable pie - they're in the freezer section and are about £2 for four.

DandilionBreak · 12/02/2019 16:09

Haggis Wellington made with mcsween's veggie haggis. I've never had complaints from meat eaters about this! I also have a recipe somewhere for a lentil and mushroom "meatloaf" and that's gorgeous too. Im sure the bbc good food site would have an equivalent.

CalmDownPacino · 12/02/2019 16:10

Seconding Babdoc - jackfruit is really nice. Sainsburys do some that are chilled and ready seasoned. They are fab with some gravy slapped on top.

redexpat · 12/02/2019 16:13

Jamie olivers ultimate veggie lasagne is a faf to make but bloody delicious.

feelingverylazytoday · 12/02/2019 16:16

I do a cheats nut roast for myself - packet of stuffing mixed with an equal amount of chopped nuts. This is a great low budget meal as well, with mashed potatoes and veg.

ErictheGuineaPig · 12/02/2019 16:18

Yeah a nutroast is nice. I made a sort of pie with chestnuts for Xmas Dinner, it was lush. If I want something easy then I like a Linda McCartney veggie pie!
