Vegetarian Sunday lunch

LilaJude · 12/02/2019 15:26

(I know IABU because I’m posting for traffic, sorry)

Does anyone have any suggestions for a veggie alternative to Sunday lunch?

I’ve been a vegetarian for a couple of years and don’t miss meat at all, but I don’t feel like I’ve ever found a good alternative to that lovely, cosy Sunday lunch feeling you get with a roast.

I don’t really like meat substitutes like quorn (but tofu is ok).

Any ideas for something meat free that has that special Sunday feel to it?

Thanks in advance!

I love Sunday lunch - I don't have a meat alternative, just have extra Yorkshires, roast potatoes etc. Lovely!

I'm vegan but still love a Sunday roast - DP has made me a nut roast before, and also brought me a vegan haggis to try. Wasn't overly keen on the latter because of the texture (bit too oaty/claggy ) but it tasted delicious. I'm fairly sure you can get the haggis in many of the main supermarkets.

I made a mushroom wellington for Xmas dinner this year. It was lush!

Hotterthanahotthing · 12/02/2019 16:22

Mushroom Wellington.Simple but looks and tastes fantastic. You can have it with any vegetables you like and if you can whip up a bit of graveyard all the better.Nicest with portobello but chestnut /shitaki will do.Top tip make sure all ingredients are cold before assembling.

Nut roast for me too. My favorite recipe is this www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/nut-loaf

LKRJM · 12/02/2019 16:25

You have you tried the ‘quorn’ style cuts of meat from Holland & Barrett. The beef is so nice and we also cut some up to fry off for ‘kebab’!

SpringForEver · 12/02/2019 17:01

Lentil bake. You can make it so that it slices or soft so you can spoon it out of the dish.

Add a gravy or sauce and your veg, maybe some horseradish or cranberry or whatever you fancy.

I make lentil bake with brown lentils, soft breadcrumbs, herbs, cheddar cheese and mix it together with an egg. You could use a packet of stuffing and add plenty of water to make it soft instead of the bread & herbs.

Bung it in the oven until it is hot/the texture you want.

I no longer buy veggie stuff that is made with pastry as it generally contains palm oil and instead I buy ready made with butter which is not as easy to find.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 12/02/2019 17:05

All the usual Sunday roast bits (we’re vegetarian not vegan so can still have the Yorkshires thank goodness 😀). And, as pp mushroom wellington. Sometimes homemade if I’ve had time but if not, M and S do a good version.

Racecardriver · 12/02/2019 17:05

Roasted cauliflower and the usual roast sides would be my suggestion.

LilaJude · 12/02/2019 17:08

I’m drooling, these all sound amazing Grin

A friend and I recently had a great pub Sunday lunch, I had chicken she had Veggie Wellington. Both plates looked and tasted great - roast potatoes, roasted root vegetables, gravy. All very colourful and cosy.

The wellington had obviously been made with care and good ingredients.

So you can still have that Sunday roast experience without meat!

trulybadlydeeply · 12/02/2019 17:22

This is wonderful, and happily sits in the freezer until you need it. Serve it with all the usual roast accompaniments:

I make dd a nut roast thing using a pkt of paxo, chopped pistachios, frozen cranberries and chopped chestnuts. She loves it as does my vegan brother

Butternut squash wellington

Graphista · 12/02/2019 18:00

If you don't want to do a whole nut roast in case you don't like it try nut cutlets, that's what I get in for my roasts (although admittedly I also like meat subs like Quorn fillets, tofu etc)

"I regularly have a veg carvery - all the veg without the meat, loads of gravy helps and cauliflower cheese!" I love that too. Assuming veggie gravy? There's so much veg/vegetarian things on a roast anyway it's easy to have a good plateful with no meat.

Roast potatoes, yorkies, veggie stuffing, carrots, parsnips, Cauli cheese, peas, green beans, sprouts (if you like I don't), beetroot, neeps...

"Vegetarian haggis is absolutely DELICIOUS." Yep!

"Sainsbury's do a really lovely cheese and vegetable pie - they're in the freezer section and are about £2 for four." Ooh noted - been having a touch of meal fatigue lately.

Shallot tarte tatin 😋

www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/1771/shallot-tarte-tatin%3famp

Also good with goats cheese crumbled/thin slices on top just before serving.

Thecurtainsofdestiny · 12/02/2019 18:07

Butternut squash or sweet potato strudel (layer cooked squash with fried sage and onions; add a layer or cranberry sauce or chestnuts if you like), wrapped in puff pastry shaped like a strudel.

Make sure fillings are cool before putting on pastry so it doesn't go soggy though.

jua890 · 12/02/2019 18:09

veggie lasagne

nut roast layered with spinach and soaked cashew (blended for creaminess)

Butternut squash pie

PupsAndKittens · 12/02/2019 18:10

Mushroom wellington?

That x100!!

SpawnChorus · 12/02/2019 18:10

Veggie haggis in puff pastry.

thaegumathteth · 12/02/2019 18:11

Same as everyone else has said really. Nut roast is my favourite - especially from m&s. Nice with Brie and cranberry on top too.

WildFlower2019 · 12/02/2019 18:13

The BOSH murshroom wellington is amazing and delicious with cranberry sauce and all the rest of the roast dinner trimmings.

www.bosh.tv/recipes/portobello-mushroom-wellington

I had it for Christmas Day. If you have a good processor it's very easy to make.

TheWernethWife · 12/02/2019 18:14

Race my friend said she did roasted cauliflower for Christmas day.

I'm sure it was a full head, not chopped up.

ContessaIsOnADietDammit · 12/02/2019 18:15

I'm vegan and we make a brick of seitan. You can carve it like a joint. It's amazing Grin
