Vegetarian Sunday lunch

(I know IABU because I’m posting for traffic, sorry)

Does anyone have any suggestions for a veggie alternative to Sunday lunch?

I’ve been a vegetarian for a couple of years and don’t miss meat at all, but I don’t feel like I’ve ever found a good alternative to that lovely, cosy Sunday lunch feeling you get with a roast.

I don’t really like meat substitutes like quorn (but tofu is ok).

Any ideas for something meat free that has that special Sunday feel to it?

Thanks in advance!

Anyone who’s made a nut roast from stuffing mix could you put a step by step here? I’ve never used stuffing mix but it sounds like it’d be easy but tasty. I quite like nutty and fruity nut roasts.

I love a nut roast. There's a nut roast en croute recipe that's a bit of a faff, but amazing.

I also do a stuffed Yorkshire pudding - yorkie, with roast veg (usually carrot, onion, parsnip, sometimes sweet potato or butternut squash, sometimes cauliflower, I once did beetroot) and gravy made with bisto powder. You can add veggie sausages or something to add a bit of protein.

Just did a Google and found the nut roast recipe online

Delia's hazelnut coated parsnip roulade with sage and onion stuffing is well worth a mention.

I'm not going to pretend it's quick and easy to make but it's lovely and a real "centrepiece" of a roast dinner.

Also lovely warmed (microwave) and put in a bun with some warm veggie gravy the next day if you actually have any left over (like a veggie hot roast sandwich).

I love a good cheese and onion pie Grin

Delia's cheese and parsnip roulade with sage and onion stuffing, bloody lovely. We have it often, even though I stopped being veggie a decade ago.

In my veggie days I used to have a lentil roast that came in a packet mix from the health food shop with the Sunday roast, I'm not a veggie any more but still fancy it every now and again, I don't think you can get it any more though!

This recipe looks similar and quite nice, might try it.

Another vite for vegetarian haggis. Love the stuff.

I like a small pie as a meat replacement. Simon Rimmer has a lovely recipe for field mushroom pies.

If I can’t be bothered to cook something, Sainsbury’s shroomdog sausages are excellent.

McSween vegetarian haggis is very salty and contains palm oil, if you are veggie for ethical reasons you might want to know that. I found it incredibly strong tasting. It seems that manufacturers think they have to destroy natural flavours of the main ingredients of veggie food by lumping in random stuff like mint, cinnamon, tons of salt, and various other stuff that just ruin it.

Homity Pie, with pastry made with butter, and any recipe from the Cranks recipe books if you can get hold of one, especially the entertaining one if you are cooking for guests.

The great thing about nut roast is that you can have it with all the things a roast dinner has as an accompaniment to the meat. You can make onion gravy to go with it.

This is the one I have always used. Nothing fancy

Son is veggie. I do a full Sunday roast dinner, including stuffing and Yorkshires for him but make veggie gravy and pop a nut cutlet in with the roast potatoes.
