To think Marie Kondo's clothes storage method is bat shit??

Not actually sure why but I'm watching Tidying Up on Netflix.

I was a bit Confused when she started talking about holding each item & it sparking joy then saying thank you to the items they were throwing away but I've preserved to them reorganising the clothes they're keeping.

A T-shirt is folded down to the size of a purse then they're all stored upwards facing in a drawer. I do actually think it would be good to be able to see them all at a glance but surely everything would come out like a dish cloth it's got that many fold lines in.

Then the jeans.... 6 folds!!

Sorry this also works for me too. Can see it all, takes less room. I’m sold

KrazyKatlady · 09/02/2019 23:25

I hate tidying and sorting, and I would see watching a programme about tidying and sorting a waste of time that could be used to tidy (if I was that bothered about it!!)

Iggi999 · 09/02/2019 23:27

I’ve always had pants I was happy to wear and ones that I would pick up last, for various reasons. Now I’ve chucked those and only have the ones I like. Joy might be a step too far, but it does please me.

TheDarkPassenger · 09/02/2019 23:28

I hang everything! Jeans trousers t shirts cardigans. I have nothing in my wardrobe I don’t love t bits anyway and I’m the complete opposite of a hoarder, I’m not sure what Marie Kondo can offer me. Is it worth watching?

Charley50 · 09/02/2019 23:30

It works for me. Well my own slacker version.

Notcontent · 09/02/2019 23:36

I am surprised some people have enough wardrobe space to hang everything, including tshirts...

But what I really wanted to say that while most people would not agree with all of MK’s ideas, the fact is that most of us have too much stuff and would benefit from taking on board some of her suggestions.

Iflyaway · 09/02/2019 23:36

My DCs and I all have oodles of black teeshirts. Is there a version of the folding that shows the front printing so that we can tell which is which?!

Uhhhh.... try folding them with the front printing at the front? :-)

mondaysaturday · 09/02/2019 23:39

Her folding method is great for t shirts, trousers, underwear and pjs, but a total disaster for bulky/thick jumpers, cardigans and shirts. And obviously nobody in their right mind would ever store dresses folded.

I did happily get rid of a third of my clothes though, thanks to MK.

GlitterStick · 09/02/2019 23:52

I discovered her a few years ago so was baffled to see everyone start posting about her in the last few months, then realised she has a Netflix show thing which explains it! Grin
The sparks joy thing I find really helpful, if it spikes joy on holding, keep, if not, bin.
Managed to keep hold of DH so far Grin
Seriously though it helps to get rid of random shit. Have I worn it/used/it/has it served a purpose even though it's broken/unuseable?
Thank it and send it on lol

SaturdayNext · 10/02/2019 00:02

Marie Kondo's ideas are seriously idiotic. Life is far too short to spend hours folding T shirts into tiny bundles. People fall for her bullshit essentially because she guilt trips them into thinking they are untidy.

Nanny0gg · 10/02/2019 00:02

I really don't understand how people can't be tidy without all this faff. Folding normally in drawers and on shelves and baskets for babies) isn't rocket science and you can still see what's there.

PookieDo · 10/02/2019 00:05

I am tidy. But now much tidier

It works fine with jumpers FYI

SpringForEver · 10/02/2019 00:07

I fold my stuff and then seal it in bags, it keeps the moths and carpet beetles out. I find that storing clothing that way and then into plastic boxes means I know what is there.

I have always folded my knickers and put them in a line, was doing it before Kondo was born, I could see what was in the drawer.

The logic of putting all the same items together in one place, like pens is crap, Each room in this house has pens and scissors because who wants to go traipsing down 3 floors to find a pen when you need one? And then have to go back because you forgot the scissors. I write notes and cut things in various rooms, not just the one that I would be keeping the pens and scissors in.

The book is designed for people who can't organise themselves or need a hand with organising their compulsive behaviour. I don't rate it at all. Use your common sense people, don't waste money on a book.

RomanyQueen1 · 10/02/2019 00:12

I fold mine like that when I can be bothered. it does work and I've so much more space to store things.
I draw the line at thanking my possessions though.

frankie001 · 10/02/2019 00:19

Inspired by this thread I’ve spent half an hour Kondoing my clothes. Have stopped as the back ache I’ve now got has sparked no joy at all!

bridgetreilly · 10/02/2019 00:22

MardyBra, it works for my size 20-24ish clothes.

zebakrheum · 10/02/2019 00:50

'Spark joy' - yeah, right. When there's three adults in the house, all of whom are self-employed with loads of technical manuals and random work stuff & kit everywhere; and between us we have 21 years'-worth of paperwork we have to keep.
That lot wouldn't spark joy in anybody. I'd willingly heave the whole lot into a skip, but I can't Grin

GlitterStick · 10/02/2019 01:12

I really don't understand how people can't be tidy without all this faff.

Good for you, but it can help from a hoarding point of view.
As in, am I going to get use out of this, will I ever wear it again, or even if it's broken, am I ever going to fix it, does it serve purpose, is it making me joyful......
etc
If not thank it and send it on its way, it helps Grin

MinervaVause · 10/02/2019 01:26

I don’t get it. You pull one item out and 4 more come out with it. Then you waste time folding them all again.

All our clothes except underwear and pj’s come out of the washing machine and straight onto clothes hangers. Hung up on a portable rail to dry then transferred straight to wardrobes.

Much easier than folding clothes into tiny little bundles.

PookieDo · 10/02/2019 06:46

Not everyone is able to hang everything up. I do not have a lot of hanging space. You just take the clothes out carefully. If you pack them too tightly then it can be difficult to get them out so you just don’t do that. Then you can lay other items down to stop them falling over. It isn’t rocket science

YourFly · 10/02/2019 06:49

Time spent not looking for stuff through piles of unwanted shit, is time well spent I say.

Tidy house, tidy mind.

The whole point of doing it once it to save time in the future and not be stuck indoors, tidying, cleaeing & sorting.

I bet we use about 40% of whats in our homes?

Im all for a bit of order Halo

BatsAreCool · 10/02/2019 06:51

DH puts the clothes away in our house. I can just imagine his face if I told him to fold them like that Grin

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 10/02/2019 06:52

I was dubious about the folding but 3 years on, I'm still doing it.
I don't fold as small as her (and they certainly don't stand up on their own like hers), but I fold t shirts to fit my drawers. As suggested, I use a shirt laid flat as a "book end"
I might spend longer putting stuff away but I feel that is balanced by being able to find stuff much quicker, plus I only ever fold that t shirt once. Searching through a pile results in messing them up.

Ditto socks and tights, I do bundle them but thf bundles are stacked in rows, and I can easily tell long socks from short socks just by what row they are in.

I am inherently an untidy person and her system has changed me!
She's still bonkers, though!

YourFly · 10/02/2019 06:59

The people that put clothes straight into the wardrobes, how many wardrobes do you have?

I would have to hang,

Coats - work coat, denim jacket, fake leather jacket, posh coat, waterproof coat, long coats, etc.
Hoodies
Jeans
T.Shirts
Dresses
Skirts
Jumpers
Long sleeved tops
Cardigans
Dresses
Trousers
Joggers

I think Ive answered my own question & need to Kondo again!

I have 1 chest of drawers, that I fold the tops in.
1 double wardrobe with some shelves, 1 single wardrobe for coats.
A drawer full of nightwear.

(And tubs under the bed with summer dresses)

SuePerb · 10/02/2019 07:13

Oh I started on my Kondo journey yesterday (I bought the book a few years ago, but I er lost it in the house somewhere). Have managed to reduce my clothes by loads.

I'm moving bedrooms and won't have half the storage I have now.

Where can I find a nice easy guide to folding?

Are dresses also folded?
