Not actually sure why but I'm watching Tidying Up on Netflix.

I was a bit Confused when she started talking about holding each item & it sparking joy then saying thank you to the items they were throwing away but I've preserved to them reorganising the clothes they're keeping.

A T-shirt is folded down to the size of a purse then they're all stored upwards facing in a drawer. I do actually think it would be good to be able to see them all at a glance but surely everything would come out like a dish cloth it's got that many fold lines in.

Then the jeans.... 6 folds!!

I’m a hoarder, yes really. I’ve found that folding my clothes and storing them her way, has actually shown me how many clothes I keep, ‘just in case’. I’m actually managing to throw away clothes now. It might only be a cou0le if items now and again, but it’s a help. I’m also buying less because I know exactly what I have to wear.

Haworthia · 09/02/2019 22:39

The “spark joy” thing just seems very Japanese to me, but also a great tool to help you get rid of stuff you don’t want, need, or particularly like.

Ali1cedowntherabbithole · 09/02/2019 22:39

I never got further with MK than clothes, but I have to say I’m a folding convert.

I save a lot of time by ironing very little and folding instead.

Clearly the woman is batshit about books though.

thenightsky · 09/02/2019 22:39

I can fit twice as many t-shirts in each drawer since I discovered Marie Kondo. I do a double layer in deeper drawers.

IceRebel · 09/02/2019 22:40

Bibbity are you me? This is exactly what I do. I can see all the items I own (in the wardrobe), and it's so quick and faff-free.

I get t shirts out of the washing machine and put them on hangers to dry on the clothes airer. Then they get moved upstairs and directly into people's wardrobes with no ironing or folding stage in between. Must save myself hours doing it this way.

trooth · 09/02/2019 22:40

The folding works for me. Kids drawers are so much better now. In regards to it all falling over as you take bits out, once I've taken I few out, I just stack 2 tops flat (rather than pointing up) at the end of the row to hold it in place.

Twillow · 09/02/2019 22:41

I love it for underwear and bedding, jeans and t-shirts. Haven't got enough drawers to do everything though. It is a little bit magical and I'm a messy slut so it's good self-discipline for me!

GetOffTheTableMabel · 09/02/2019 22:41

When we moved house, the removal men sathey had never seemed such tidy draws. I was pathetically pleased.
I find the vertical folding works really well for me and dd2 - except for jeans. I live in jeans and have about a dozen pairs of different styles. If you fold them like she does then skinny, straight, boyfriend etc all look exactly the same in the draw and you have to guess which one is which and refold your wrong guesses. It got far to annoying and now I have them just folded flat so I can see the label/style without unfolding.

Herbyvor · 09/02/2019 22:41

Works for me as well, the book issue is a red herring if you haven’t taken in what she said.

WhentheDealGoesDown1 · 09/02/2019 22:43

It works well for DHs clothes as he wears a lot of T shirts and stuff made of sportswear type of material and jeans but I like mine on hangers so just his stuff is Kondoed and then he can see all his clothes properly

Starface · 09/02/2019 22:43

I like the folding. As with others, it makes things easy to see and find. I only fold what is foldable, straight out of the dryer, into individual baskets ready for transporting to the right rooms. For my littlies, I fold in outfit sets. They still get freedom of choice, but have to choose an outfit. The whole outfit inevitably gets washed each time any way. Plus it helps them look better. It's great.

angelikacpickles · 09/02/2019 22:44

If you want to spend hours every week folding all your clothing into perfect rectangles then carry on. I literally cba. I get t shirts out of the washing machine and put them on hangers to dry on the clothes airer. Then they get moved upstairs and directly into people's wardrobes with no ironing or folding stage in between. Must save myself hours doing it this way.

Do you literally hang up every single item of clothing? Jumpers and t-shirts?

MardyBra · 09/02/2019 22:45

Does the folding technique work for —big fat bastards— plus size clothes?

MardyBra · 09/02/2019 22:46

Strike through fail -oh the shame-

MardyBra · 09/02/2019 22:46

Bugger

AlanThePig · 09/02/2019 22:46

Just watched the video...not convinced.
How do I tell my metallica shirt from my megadeth shirt when it's folded that small? I have many black Tees and suspect all will look the same when folded.

ArmchairTraveller · 09/02/2019 22:49

My daughter does this, she folds t shirts and gives each one a ‘spine’ that shows the design.

WoollyMummoth · 09/02/2019 22:55

I have this amazing big box with a rail and plastic sticks to hang things off. It works really well. Jog on Marie.

budgetneeded · 09/02/2019 23:00

The concepts are good; being tidy and keeping things that promote your joy HOWEVER I’m not doing the folding, I’ve got space and it isn’t an issue.
Her show has prompted me to tackle a couple spots (linen closet and bathrooms).
Its made a difference.
Notice how I haven’t mentioned the very challenging spots of main entrance and kitchen pantry...

sparkling123 · 09/02/2019 23:03

Love it, has changed my drawers from a complete state that only looked tidy for about a day after being tidied, to a maintainable system.
But I do agree about the jeans, best system I've had is to hang all trousers on those children's coat hangers.

Megan2018 · 09/02/2019 23:03

I hang everything apart from underwear, socks, tights, nightwear, sportswear, swimwear.
I have everything on matching wooden hangers. Hung from the machine. The folding is crackers I think.

lostelephant · 09/02/2019 23:04

They don't crease because you're not putting any weight (other clothes) on top of them.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 09/02/2019 23:05

I did drawers after the book came out, and when we moved house found the “sparking joy” question very useful for getting rid of stuff. I also did a thing I read about where on the 1st of the month you get rid of one item, two on the second, and so on - that was brilliant. (We had a lot of junk.)

SoupDragon · 09/02/2019 23:11

Anyone whose pants "spark joy" needs more joy in their lives.

StatisticallyChallenged · 09/02/2019 23:19

The folding works really well and stuff doesn't come out creased at all. I don't have anything like enough space to hang everything!

It's also amazing for suitcases - I've done two week work trips and not even unpacked and everything looked great.
