To think people who try to use umberellas in the wind are seriously stupid...

Just that really, walking down the high street 70mph wind and you have idiots trying to use umberellas and then looking shocked when they turn inside out or break.... is common sense really that uncommon 🤐

Iggly · 08/02/2019 13:40

Maybe they don’t have coats with hoods.

BluthsFrozenBananas · 08/02/2019 13:41

My dog got blown across the garden earlier, anyone who thinks an umbrella can withstand this wind is very much deluded.

Mmmhmmm · 08/02/2019 13:41

"is common sense really that uncommon"

Yes.

OhDearHowSadNeverMind · 08/02/2019 13:41

Maybe they should get coats with hoods ffs!
YANBU OP - streets are littered with inside-out tattered umbrellas in this weather!

ReaganSomerset · 08/02/2019 13:47

I think YABU. Starting a thread to call total strangers idiots because you disagree with their strategies for dealing with inclement weather is rather unnecessary and unkind imo.

However, littering is reprehensible and they ought to put their destroyed umbrellas in the bin.

StillCoughingandLaughing · 08/02/2019 13:51

Also, wind and rain often combine. They’re not using the umbrellas to shelter from the wind, presumably. If someone takes an umbrella out in the rain - which is the generally accepted purpose of said item - are they suddenly ‘idiots’ because the wind picks up?

hatethinkingofusernames · 08/02/2019 13:53

I'm sat at a train station and there's a lot of this going on 😂

WhoWants2Know · 08/02/2019 14:00

I'm entertained by watching people pulled along by their umbrellas, so YABU.

Glitterblue · 08/02/2019 14:05

I struggled with the poor dog today let alone an umbrella!

TheFifthKey · 08/02/2019 14:11

People are always trying to get me to borrow umbrellas in rainy weather - I never use them because in the country it seems rain is always accompanied by a horrible wind that renders them useless. But there are plenty of people who think you’re mad for going out without an umbrella (even with a hooded coat)...

Stinkytoe · 08/02/2019 14:12

No, just a little over optimistic

MaggieAndHopey · 08/02/2019 14:15

Even if you did manage not to break it or be blown away, in those winds an umbrella would be fuck all use in keeping you dry.

hastingsmua1 · 08/02/2019 14:18

Shock horror - some of us work, you know, instead of spending our afternoons pottering about on the high street like yourself. The weather was fine in my area this morning when I left for work at 7. Hence not needing to kit out in whatever elite windproof & rainproof attire you deem appropriate in lieu of an umbrella.

Shockingly, I ventured outside during my lunch with my umbrella. I managed to return to work completely dry regardless of the wind so not quite sure how that was a ‘seriously stupid’ choice.

Doesn’t sound like you have much common sense yourself frankly.

CallMeSirShotsFired · 08/02/2019 14:23

My dog got blown across the garden earlier

Sorry for laughing at this mental image Grin
Hope dog is ok after his involuntary perambulations!

temperancefugit · 08/02/2019 15:21

Have started trying to walk as much as possible instead of using the car. Whatever the weather, since I’ve started using waterproof overtrousers as well as a waterproof jacket, I’m as snug (and dry) as a bug in a rug. They’re baggy enough to whip on and off easily and even though they're really thin, they’re superbly windproof and keep me lovely and warm. Don’t take up any more space than an umbrella either. Not the most high fashion of items but neither is the soaked legs look.

Toastedstrudel · 08/02/2019 16:20

Some of us have wind proof umbrellas, though. 😃

Sophisticatedsarcasm · 08/02/2019 16:21

@hastingmua1
Actually I do have a job, which happens to be on the high street... 😊 It’s not like you can’t tell it’s rain and windy, most people tend to check the weather before they leave. So you take a umberella with you but surely common sense should kick in wether to use it. I’m big girl and I almost got blown into the road. I think it stands to reason if people are barely able to walk down the road then a umberellas defo isn’t going to survive...
like I said common sense seems to be uncommon.... I can see I’ve ruffled a few feathers those of which seem to be the ‘ idiots who use an umbrella in the wind ‘ 😂😊

YANBU. Umbrellas should be fucking banned anyway. See also people using them when it's stopped raining.

Sophisticatedsarcasm · 08/02/2019 16:22

@toastedstrudel 😂

Catsandbootsandbootsandcats · 08/02/2019 16:25

I have never seen the point of umbrellas, when it's raining it's often windy too so they just end up inside out and broken.

I usually just end up with wet hair as hoods blow off in the wind too.

Sophisticatedsarcasm · 08/02/2019 16:26

@badlydrawnperson
I’ve always said people should have a license for umberellas, nothing worse than walking along and almost getting your eye poked out on the count of someone not giving a shit about thier surrounding... I have no qualms about using an umberella just move to side to avoid some sort of injury to and innocent passer by.
I almost got hit in the face because of someone battling with an umberella in the wind today so I say my comments are justified.

OP posts:
badlydrawnperson · 08/02/2019 16:31

@Sophisticatedsarcasm Oh yes.

I got very nearly jabbed in the eye by some bloke's umbrella at the crossing outside Euston Station - when I sarcastically said "don't mind me" he said "yo ent from raaahnd ere are ya" as if that made it OK. Tool.

Thecabbageassasin · 08/02/2019 16:37

It depends. If you walk in the direction of the wind then it shelters you from rain and wind.

I don’t much use umbrellas, cause I always lose them anyway (not in wind) but I have occasionally done the above and I don’t consider myself unduly stupid.

halfwitpicker · 08/02/2019 16:40

Totally agree

NameChangeNugget · 08/02/2019 16:44

YANBU.

Seen some right fucking idiots doing that today Grin
