'We've run out of food' - said McDonald's. WTAF?! (First world problem, light hearted!)

Yesterday,I had a voucher from a newspaper for a Big Mac and medium fries for £1.99,so decided to treat myself on my way home from meeting up with my DD. As I approached the shop,I noticed that it was in darkness, but with people still inside sitting at tables, eating, and staff behind the counter. I went in and asked a passing member of staff what was happening. She said 'We're just about to close because we've run out of food'. Shock Is this actually possible?! Has anyone else ever had this?

@EnoughSnowAlready blame the sugar tax for that one. I miss them too.

Twix flurries are lovely.

MissCharleyP · 08/02/2019 11:55

QuestionableMouse I thought the sugar tax only applied to fizzy drinks and not food (yet)?

Daffydils · 08/02/2019 11:59

@Ali1cedowntherabbithole that has to be the least MaccyDs order ever Grin

ImMeantToBeWorking · 08/02/2019 12:02

I went in to KFC one day, they had ran out of chicken...devastated!

easyandy101 · 08/02/2019 12:03

Hot fudge Sunday was the one

And they used to do like milkshakes as specials sometimes (maybe not in the UK though)

Bluesmartiesarebest · 08/02/2019 12:25

Twix flurry it is then!

it is unreasonable to insist that certain types of egg can only go in certain types of bread products, particularly when the type of bread that goes with the type of egg that the customer wants has run out.

BarbaraofSevillle I was using our own terminology as I thought it might help you if you wanted to switch round for folded so they’d know what you mean.

As QuestionableMouse said, we don’t have bowls or whisks or anything remotely similar so it just isn’t possible to create a folded egg if we run out of the liquid egg. Everything in McDonalds is exceptionally procedural and specific.

As I said earlier, you should be allowed to substitute round egg for folded. The crew may be new, so it is worth speaking to a manager if they say no.

I agree with all of QuestionableMouse’s answers on other questions; our store doesn’t use anything past time either, and if there was full time on pies we would offer you table service or another product instead.

Is it true that you can have coffee with a Happy Meal and does it cost extra?

BarbaraofSevillle You can get any drink with a happy meal with the exception of blended ice drinks. There is no small size coffee so it will be the same size as you’d get in a medium meal Smile

Standard coffees (white/black) don’t cost more but others, like the cappuccino and toffee latte, I believe will do.

AlexaAmbidextra Yes, the breakfast bacon is currently steamed and cannot be altered.

Also, McDonalds has two suppliers for every single product to try and combat supply issues. It doesn’t always work, but it does mean that if a store runs out it will probably be due to the BM ordering incorrectly rather than an actual supply issue.

hazell42 · 08/02/2019 12:34

Frankie and Benny's my granddaughters birthday meal. No chips. No burgers. No meatballs. No ketchup! Everything we asked for they didnt have.
The manager was grovelling and clearly very embarrassed. We ended up comforting her.
They did give us free drinks and desserts and she gave me her staff discount too. Shit happens, I guess

SpringForEver · 08/02/2019 12:40

I was in Zizzi's once, they had run out of pizza dough. I left.

Hamandcrispsandwich · 08/02/2019 12:44

Bluesmartiesarebest Twix Mcflurry is my sisters favourite! Not had it myself personally.

My McDonalds has ran out of bacon a few times!

Please could you tell me what has happened with the veggie burgers? They used to be a patty shape, and had salad in, with tomato and stuff, and normal mayo.

A few weeks ago I was given one with only lettuce and some weird tasting mayo, no tomato etc. Hadn't had one for a while.

A week later I was given a bun with 2 vegetarian finger type things which were foul, also only lettuce and nasty mayo.

Are the proper veggie burgers no longer sold? I would like to know because it is the only thing I ever get now, since being given cheese nuggets that had clearly been heated a few times and looked as if they had been dropped on the floor. These episodes have all been in different places, so not idea what to expect and don't want a repeat of the cheese nuggets or the nasty fingers in a bun.

I never thought I would say this, but I really miss Burger King bean burgers.

VodkaGirl77 · 08/02/2019 12:48

Oooh I have a question! My dd (12) is a vegetarian and refuses to eat at McDonald's because she reckons that the fries and any other veggie products won't be kept/cooked separate from the meat products. Can you help me to reassure her please??

PodgeBod · 08/02/2019 12:52

KFC refused to sell me a burger once because they had run out of the proper bun. I asked why they couldn't just use a different bun but they wouldn't budge.
Considering the difference was probably only a different squirt of sauce and some cheese I was so irritated that I left and got Macdonalds instead.

Birdsgottafly · 08/02/2019 12:59

"KFC refused to sell me a burger once because they had run out of the proper bun. I asked why they couldn't just use a different bun but they wouldn't budge"

Because each burger name is branded and has to be put together exactly the same every time. Also it goes through the tills as that burger has been sold, so the whole ingredient list goes onto a stock order.

My DD works in Pizza Hut and its usually a case of mismanagement (they are franchises), or someone being lazy on the previous shift, by not doing enough bases etc and them being too busy on the next shift to catch up.

QuestionableMouse · 08/02/2019 13:06

@SpringForEver

The veggie range has changed. We have red pesto veggie goujons now that are new and are more widely available (like the veggie wrap).

WhatToDoAboutWailmerGoneRogue · 08/02/2019 13:07

SpringForEver We revamped our entire vegetarian menu a few weeks ago. Instead of the veggie patty, we now have veggie goujons.

The two vegetarian options now are the Spicy Veggie One, a wrap which is on the wrap of the day deal for £1.99 on Mondays, and the Vegetable Deluxe, a burger.

The Spicy Veggie wrap has spicy relish sauce, tomato, lettuce, red onion and two of our red pesto goujons.

The Vegetable Deluxe burger has sandwich mayo and lettuce, along with the two red pesto goujons. This burger has exactly the same ingredients (sandwich mayo and lettuce) as the previous Vegetablr Deluxe, but has replaced the patty with the goujons.

We also do a Veggie Wrap Happy Meal now, which is one of our red pesto goujons with tomato sauce and lettuce.

If you don’t like spicy sauce, you can ask for a different sauce and we will accommodate Smile Same with any other ingredients you’d like to change.

The cheese side changes every time there’s a new promo; we are currently on the Mozzarella Dippers.

VodkaGirl77 Absolutely! Our veggie goujons and cheese sides are kept in a separate freezer on the shop floor. Fries have their own hopper nothing else goes in along with their own vats that are filtered entirely separately from the chicken vats. Cheese sides have a vat all of their own and veggie goujons are cooked in the fry vat.

Every single item on the menu has a specific coloured tray and tong for it so they are never used incorrectly. Red tongs and turquoise trays are for the cheese sides, veggie goujons have green tongs and green tray etc. etc.

McDonalds are exceptionally strict and procedural; their standards are exceedingly high, particularly in terms of food hygienec cleanliness and storage.

QuestionableMouse · 08/02/2019 13:08

@VodkaGirl77

Veggie product are cooked separately to meat products (including fries). They're assembled on the same line but have separate equipment.

AnxiousMcAnxiousFace · 08/02/2019 13:16

I love McDonald’s so much.

That is all.

DiagramFan · 08/02/2019 13:18

@Itsyerself....LOL!

JumpOrBePushed · 08/02/2019 13:25

We’ve had no fries available at Burger King before. We were told that they’d run out because a supply lorry hadn’t turned up. Everything else was still available.

But we went to a nearby McDonalds instead.

DiagramFan · 08/02/2019 13:25

This is definitely one of the best threads I've read in ages.

@WhatToDoAboutWailmerGoneRogue - is there any way we can nominate you for a staff award because of your awesomeness?

borntobequiet · 08/02/2019 13:50

A local nursery sells free range eggs. I went in once and they only had two left. “Oh dear” said the lady. Then “ROGER GET SOME EGGS!” Roger appeared in two min with eggs still warm from the hen.
Irrelevant but a nice story I think.

SpringForEver · 08/02/2019 14:29

@WhatToDoAboutWailmerGoneRogue & Questionable Mouse
Thank you.

That's it for me then, those goujons are disgusting. What on earth is in them? Basil and some kind of spice that tastes like rotting compost?

The little cheese things used to be something I had as a treat, they aren't great but when you are hungry and nowhere else to get anything ... However we picked some up at Colindale Retail Park and they were inedible, dark brown, rock hard and didn't seem to have cheese in the centre, more like chicken, they were burnt but cold and as I said before, looked as if they had been lying on the floor. Couldn't go back so binned them. Will never go there again.

Meagain19 · 08/02/2019 15:08

The two McDonalds in our town always run out of milkshake.

MyGuideJools · 08/02/2019 15:14

We went for a carvery once, group of 10 of us pre Xmas works do.It was booked a long way in advance.
Anyway we all sat down with our drinks at our reserved table and the waitress came and told us there was no carvery meat left but we could have fish pie 🤣😯
Needless to say we all left (without paying for drinks) and got a Chinese takeaway!
