To think most people in the UK don't really care about NI

Tooldemont · 07/02/2019 16:23

Just that really, we don't seem to be a together nation and many people I know would just prefer Ireland to become one country on that landmass.

Maybe it's just my circles, but rings true here

As an Australian with heritage in both Northern Ireland and England who will be visiting both in a few months.. can I just say this thread has been an eye opener..

I can’t believe some of the attitudes some posters have against Northern Ireland.

PositivelyPERF · 08/02/2019 00:01

It’s not uncommon and MNHQ do nothing to prevent it. Misgender someone, that’s a strike against you. Slabber about a whole province of people, nothing to see here.

PositivelyPERF · 08/02/2019 00:05

Thank the goddess, most uk people, including the many that have moved to NI, that I have met, are decent and civilised people. If I’d haven’t met and known so many good English, Scottish and Welsh people, I would be as depressed as you, I would be depressed too. Unfortunately as soon as NI is mentioned, the bigots come out and latch on.

Janecon · 08/02/2019 00:06

I'm pretty tough but I'm actually in tears after reading many of the posts here. I wish I hadn't. I'm born British, have never had anything other than a British passport, have worked hard and paid my taxes all my life and yet so many of my fellow citizens seem to see me as a drain on society and a problem to the UK. So sad.

StepLadders007 · 08/02/2019 00:09

So sad

Don't be sad, I've given up caring what middle class, probable Guardian readers think about the concept of being British. Their self loathing is palpable.

PositivelyPERF · 08/02/2019 00:10

Don’t let the bigots upset you Janecon. Most people are decent and those that don’t understand NI can’t be blamed for the British government ensuring they were never taught the truth in school.

Donmesswime · 08/02/2019 00:11

It's not a whole Province. There were 9 counties in Ulster - Ulster is a Province.

6 of ye went with Britain.
Off with ye.
You made yer bed, now lie on it.

whereisthepostman · 08/02/2019 00:14

'I don't know what NI wants to do with itself but I resent it being the stumbling block which is holding up Brexit negotiations.'

Ok, well if England hadn't invaded the country and divided it then there wouldn't be a problem really.

@Donmesswime you're doing yourself no credit with your comments.

That's exactly how I feel when I think about how Ireland has given it's soul to the unelected technocrats steering the EU.

Donmesswime · 08/02/2019 00:21

I really don't care. It's how I feel about the North. There has been a lot of discussion about NI joining Ireland. Hell no! They're grand where they are.

Donmesswime · 08/02/2019 00:22

Stepladders, we're grand thanks.

StepLadders007 · 08/02/2019 00:24

we're grand thanks

Aye, at the moment. The EU is just about to lose 14% of it's annual budget, they are going to ask Ireland for a lot more money, a lot more.

Thank god I don't live in a place where a trip to the doctors and then a trip to the chemist to pick up a prescription costs the best part of £100.00

EdtheBear · 08/02/2019 00:27

The whole thing is a fuckup.
All the exit campaigners crawled away when they got the win. Because actually they didn't think people would be actually be daft enough to vote for it.

However one thing this thread has shown is the education system has let us all down.
How much rubbish did we all learn about ancient history Romans, Egyptian and Vikings and nothing about the modern history of the country.

Nothing about the wars between Scotland and England. Or the Highland or even less known Lowland Clearances.
Nothing about the civil war in Ireland or any of the history of it.
How and when did Wales join England?
So much stuff that nobody seems to have been educated on.
I also feel education on the World Wars and the things that followed to support peace in Europe was also a tad lacking.

TaimaandRanyasBestFriend · 08/02/2019 00:27

Funny that, a sovereign nation democratically deciding to be part of the EU, decades after gaining its independence.

So there you go, people, the gloves are off, this is Brexit for you.

Oh, btw, it is 'its', that is the possessive.

Sakura7 · 08/02/2019 00:27

Are you for real Step?

For one thing, we directly elect our MEPs. Secondly, we're quite happy to have a powerful block of allies fighting our corner. I get that this is unacceptable to some Brits who think we should still be under their boot, but what do you expect? That we're going to bow down to the madness of the current British government, despite the damage it would do to our economy and more importantly peace on the island?

Ireland is a progressive, outward looking country which is respected on the world stage. That really sticks in the craw of some people...

Bubastes · 08/02/2019 00:28

Don't count your chickens. Your Brexit pals are just biding their time until they can sell the NHS off to private healthcare providers. Ooops.

StepLadders007 · 08/02/2019 00:29

Ed

Totally unrelated to the thread but when you know about the history of the UK and Ireland and how bloody and terrible it's been, right up to a 100 years ago - I laugh when people talk about "white privilege"

TaimaandRanyasBestFriend · 08/02/2019 00:30

Aye, at the moment. The EU is just about to lose 14% of it's annual budget, they are going to ask Ireland for a lot more money, a lot more.

One of the strongest trading blocks in the world and you still think they need the UK to get over it?

This thread is mind blowing.

It's also in strong contention for one of the ugliest threads I've seen on here in 13 years.

Bubastes · 08/02/2019 00:30

'I laugh when people talk about "white privilege"'

What a surprise.

PositivelyPERF · 08/02/2019 00:30

Alright then, ignorant towards the population of the six counties.

The rest is just ignorant bullshit.

Sakura7 · 08/02/2019 00:31

Also Step, salaries are much higher in ROI than NI so we can afford our healthcare with room to spare. Those who are unemployed or are low earners get a medical card.

A friend of mine in the UK needed to get vaccinations recently and there was a 6 week wait on the NHS. She went private but it cost her double what it would have in Ireland.

StepLadders007 · 08/02/2019 00:33

Germany is technically in recession. France is in flames, Italy is a financial basket case that could fail tomorrow. Greece, Portugal....etc, etc.....

The EU is fecked, you've just been lied to.

Donmesswime · 08/02/2019 00:35

Britain thinks they still own Ireland and seem surprised when they're stuck with Northern Ireland only.
