To think most people in the UK don't really care about NI

Just that really, we don't seem to be a together nation and many people I know would just prefer Ireland to become one country on that landmass.

Maybe it's just my circles, but rings true here

I care about NI, having lived through the troubles it would be awful if it returned, just awful, for everybody!

HateIsNotGood · 07/02/2019 22:30

OP - we do care, we care a lot, the B-thing aside; I haven't ever been to NI, yet, but haven't ever been to lots of other places, because there are so many to go to.

I might think I know about NI, and what it's like to live there, how it should be and try to quantify all the what ifs and should and could be,s. But that means naught.

The one thing I can say is, it would be impossible for me to not 'care' about NI and all the people that live there; is there anything that you can suggest us mainland Brits can do to alleviate any concerns you have?

But I'd be talking out of my arse if I tried to do that.

LivLemler · 07/02/2019 22:38

God this is a depressing thread to read (from ROI living in NI, which I love, for a decade).

The other thing I find is that people in GB don’t really consider that there was a civil war in the UK until 20 years ago. NI is part of the UK. There was no civil war in ROI.

A thousand times this.

OnlyaMan · 07/02/2019 22:52

The majority of people in NI are British and want to remain British. Are people seriously advocating essentially throwing nearly 2m people out of their own country just to make things more convenient for Brexit?
This is obviously a fair comment.
People who think many people I know would just prefer Ireland to become one country on that landmass
may in fact prove the point that most people in the UK don't really care about NI
If so, shame on them.

Quarepants · 07/02/2019 22:54

a united Ireland...for the benefit of all Irish citizens

Seriously? I grew up in Ireland. The north was Britain to us (sorry northerners who identify as Irish). The troubles were up there and Britain's problem, not anything to do with us. When I moved to the UK I was bewildered as to why some English people referred to the troubles as an Irish (as in the Republic's) problem. The fact that they didn't know their own history was surprising but since Brexit we realise it is a common issue.

It was not part of my country. It is still not. In fact i do not know any Irish people who would want the north of Ireland to be part of Ireland (and nor do many Northern irish people want to be part of Ireland).

So you're alright there Tooldemont and friends on behalf of Britain. Thanks for the offer but you insisted on keeping it all those years ago so go on and keep it some more.

So OP, not only are you NBU about the UK not giving a fuck, Ireland doesn't give a fuck either. Apart from maybe Sinn Féin.

**Happy among themselves, but not really normal enough to be let out.

Just fuck off with this attitude Angry

PositivelyPERF · 07/02/2019 23:17

Donmesswime the bigotry is dripping from every word you’ve printed. I’m glad you’re from such an enlightened part of Ireland. I’d hate to see what poison you’d come out with if you weren’t. Hmm

Did it ever occur to you that you were born on the ‘Irish side’ of the border by pure luck?

Toottootcar · 07/02/2019 23:20

How is “they are a strange people” “shouldn’t be let out” boy racist? Wtf?

watsmyname · 07/02/2019 23:21

Donmesswine

Ireland full of progressive people just like yourself?

I'm glad most normal people realise your don't tar everyone with the one brush.

Maybe it's you that's backward and basically a bit of a dick that no one would want." With that attitude.

velocitykate · 07/02/2019 23:28

I'm going to be controversial here and I haven't read beyond the first page of replies, but I think that until NI come into te 21st century and embrace abortion and same sex marriage, they don't deserve to be part of either the UK or Ireland

whereisthepostman · 07/02/2019 23:30

'The DUP are idiots (newsflash to no one!) in taking this hardline Brexit stance. They're doing more for the United Ireland...'

I don't understand why the DUP have taken this decision. The vast majority of their voters are the farmers and their families in the North and East and they're going to be utterly devastated without EU funding.

rededucator · 07/02/2019 23:32

Unless you live in Ireland or NI I'm not sure we are entitled to a 'don't care' or 'would rather' attitude considering how many thousand of people on both sides have died for their beliefs in the matter.

whereisthepostman · 07/02/2019 23:34

'think that until NI come into te 21st century and embrace abortion and same sex marriage'

We don't have the choice on it. Loads of NI people are normal people like me, we would love to see this happen. We don't have a government to bring it in. And when we do, if a party moves to legalise abortion and same sex marriage the DUP blocks it under the freedom of conscience clause.

The DUP is pulling our strings and blocking our progress, and now they're doing the same to the rest of the UK too. It's criminal IMO.

Janecon · 07/02/2019 23:36

I grew up in NI. I'm as British as anyone living in London, Cardiff, Glasgow!

StoneofDestiny · 07/02/2019 23:39

I was sickened growing up listening to Ian Paisley.I was (and am) sickened by the antics of the Orangemen and their marching and territorial aggression.I am sickened by the DUP. I am impatient with this whole ludicrous business of Stormont not sitting

All this - and I'm sick of the orange lodge nuckledraggers that think it's ok to 'celebrate' some battle in the 17th by terrorising other citizens year on year and bring their divisive bigotry across the Irish Sea to find common allegiance with other nuckledraggers like the EDL - and Arlene Foster, chief knuckledragger who thinks it a great idea to come to Scotland to lead an Orange Parade - and this Tory Government does a deal with her DUP to keep themselves in power.

The whole thing is a crock of shit that will pass divisiveness as a way of life on to yet another generation. For shame.

BroomstickOfLove · 07/02/2019 23:40

Over three quarters of the population of NI are in favour of same sex marriage, and a majority of the NI Assembly voted in favour of it. You'd think that the Brexit disco would help people in the rest of the UK to have a bit more empathy for people with a non-functioning government who put party loyalties ahead of the common good and who turn the area they represent into an international laughing stock.

StepLadders007 · 07/02/2019 23:41

100% This.

PositivelyPERF · 07/02/2019 23:45

I think that until NI come into te 21st century and embrace abortion and same sex marriage, they don't deserve to be part of either the UK or Ireland

Why do you think that’s an acceptable comment to make about a whole population? Would you be brave enough to say that if we were a different race from you? Why is it acceptable to MNHQ that a whole province of people can be described as ‘backward, strange people, shouldn’t be let out’? The irony of the posters making derogatory comments about the people of NI while pretending that they themselves are decent individuals. 🙄

MissEliza · 07/02/2019 23:46

I don't know what NI wants to do with itself but I resent it being the stumbling block which is holding up Brexit negotiations. I'm Scottish ((not living there) and they voted to remain but TM doesn't need their votes. The government would have got on with it all if they didn't need the DUP and that feels very unfair.

Janecon · 07/02/2019 23:56

Thank you @StepLadders007 I've found this thread quite distressing.

PositivelyPERF · 07/02/2019 23:57

Poor you. What a terrible inconvenience to you, that the people of NI want peace to remain and the dick heads in government are bound by the peace agreement. So sorry, so sad.
