To think most people in the UK don't really care about NI

Just that really, we don't seem to be a together nation and many people I know would just prefer Ireland to become one country on that landmass.

Maybe it's just my circles, but rings true here

You think the IRA was Irish people? Predominately NI actually. UVF, UDF, RUC et al, all British. People keep blaming this shit on Irish people. It was a war on British soil. Fought by people in their domain.

Not by Irish people.

DonkeyAtemyHomework · 09/02/2019 09:10

The EU is being very indulgent in allowing shenanigans to continue. If it was me in power, I'd be saying, it's time to grow up!

Sakura7 · 09/02/2019 09:13

Donkey Yes, I'm Irish, I know all this.

You're not dealing with the reality that half the population of NI identify as Irish and half as British. It is already a special case. The reason the GFA worked is that both views were represented and respected. You don't throw that away because of Brexit.

Also the ordinary people of NI are not 'threatening violence' FFS. In fact I don't think anyone is, but some people are rightly pointing out the potential risks.

DonkeyAtemyHomework · 09/02/2019 09:22

But the IRA is dead and gone. It's time to let them just get on with it as far as I see it. Holding Britain to ransom with the unspoken threat of violence. Unless TM is privy to real threats that she hasn't disclosed.

StreetwiseHercules · 09/02/2019 09:24

The threats of violence are from the media and from unionist politicians.

DonkeyAtemyHomework · 09/02/2019 09:24

What is the issue they have with a hard border anyway? Question to NI.

Parthenope · 09/02/2019 09:25

So the Derry car bomb was a figment of our imagination?

Downtroddenhousingass · 09/02/2019 09:25

Can someone recommend a good documentary on Ireland?

If I'm right they ignored churchills request for help during the war?

DonkeyAtemyHomework · 09/02/2019 09:25

Why would a hard border bother Unionists? They want nothing to do with Ireland the last I heard.

StreetwiseHercules · 09/02/2019 09:28

“What is the issue they have with a hard border anyway? Question to NI.”

Hmmm. Could it be because the absence of a hard border is enshrined in a hard won peace treaty and that neither side of the border wants a hard border?

Could it be because this is only an issue because of voters in England choosing Brexit and that for the people of NI (who voted against) the English and Welsh Brexit vote doesn’t trump their pre-existing law?

DonkeyAtemyHomework · 09/02/2019 09:30

They've had peace for 2 decades. Surely they can cope now with the situation.

StreetwiseHercules · 09/02/2019 09:35

“They've had peace for 2 decades. Surely they can cope now with the situation.”

What’s it got to do with you?

DonkeyAtemyHomework · 09/02/2019 09:36

Ok, so if get this right, the people who identify as Irish in NI don't want a land border. The DUP don't care.
The people who identify as British don't want a sea border, as that cuts them off from GB the mothership ahem mainland . The DUP cares about this and unsurprisingly are unwilling to negotiate.
So, it's only the ones who identify as being Irish who are opposed to the land border?
Correct me if I'm wrong on this please.

If we end up with a no deal Brexit, it will be because of NI.

Sakura7 · 09/02/2019 09:47

Donkey - plenty of unionists don't want a hard border. For example farmers who sell produce or buy livestock across the border. What about people who live on one side and work on the other? There have been polls done showing that in the event of no deal, enough unionists would support a United Ireland to make it a majority view. They are putting practicality before ideology.

The Brexit mess is not the fault of NI, it's the fault of Farage, Johnson, Cameron, et al, and the people who blindly voted for it with no concept as to how it could be carried out. A clean Brexit that benefits both parties is pie in the sky.

Sakura7 · 09/02/2019 09:48

Also Donkey why do you care so much about Brexit being fucked up? How exactly does it affect you?

Lizzie48 · 09/02/2019 09:50

It was always going to end up in deadlock with TM relying on the DUP to keep her in power. It happened before when John Major went into coalition with the UUP, and it delayed the peace process by several years.

How can TM negotiate a fair deal for the people of NI, a majority of whom voted to remain in the EU, when she's relying on the DUP to keep her in power?

Sadly, once again, party politics comes before the good of the country.

SteelRiver · 09/02/2019 09:51

Most people in Northern Ireland want to stay as part of the UK. I consider NI as much a part of our union as England, Wales and Scotland and I think plenty of people care, just about everyone I know does.

StreetwiseHercules · 09/02/2019 09:51

The DUP don’t represent the views of the people in Northern Ireland, so what the DUP wants is irrelevant.

Unionists and Nationalists both voted against Brexit and they value the peace and the current arrangement.

Why should they roll over an accept a Brexit which trampled over their peace treaty when they didn’t vote for it?

StreetwiseHercules · 09/02/2019 09:54

“If we end up with a no deal Brexit, it will be because of NI.”

That’s the price the UK pays for its history. Nae luck.

bluetheskyis · 09/02/2019 09:56

God do I wish the IRA was dead and gone, and the UVF and all the rest of the murderous b’tards but unfortunately they are not.

DonkeyAtemyHomework · 09/02/2019 10:06

Sakura What an odd question to ask me! I would assume the answer would be obvious.

woollyheart · 09/02/2019 10:08

The people of NI that voted against Brexit knew that the best hope for peace and overcoming hard held historical grudges was being part of the European Union.

If you wanted to continue to enjoy hating your neighbours, Brexit was the right choice.

toomuchisneverenough · 09/02/2019 10:57

If we have a no deal brexit it is not the people of NI at fault it's the DUP
