To think most people in the UK don't really care about NI

Just that really, we don't seem to be a together nation and many people I know would just prefer Ireland to become one country on that landmass.

Maybe it's just my circles, but rings true here

Wouldn't you say we have the best of both worlds already?
We can have a British passport or Irish. We can identify as a British, Irish or Northern Irish citizen.

I think most people in NI including myself would go along with it and leave on whatever terms. The problem is there are people who won't and the risk to peace is the issue. How else do you solve it? The backstop is the best of both worlds for the meantime. Do you disagree with it?

DonkeyAtemyHomework · 09/02/2019 04:41

I think it's time the people in NI stopped throwing their toys out of the pram.

LellyMcKelly · 09/02/2019 04:44

I’m from NI and live in England. Most English people couldn’t even pinpoint it on a map or tell you which but is Ireland and which bit is NI. I feel a bit sad for all those mad loyalists who go on and on about how British they are, when in reality most Brits barely know the place even exists and couldn’t care less.

You'd need a second Easter Sunday agreement or something.

Under the Good Friday agreement, you can decide to be NI, British or Irish or any combination thereof.

Now you want along with that, to be part of the EU, the UK, Ireland, NI or non-EU pmsl.

You've balls. I'll give you that.

StreetwiseHercules · 09/02/2019 06:29

“Best of both worlds? NI is part of the uk, the uk are leaving the eu.. you can't pick and choose the rules”

This could easily be done. Denmark manages to do it and keep it’s state and kingdom together.

Most of Denmark is in the EU, but it’s devolved territories (Greenland and the Faroes Islands) are not. Greenland voted to leave the EU in 1985 despite being part of the Danish state and they left.

It is British Nationalist intransigence at the heart of Westminster that will bring about a reunification on the Ireland and Scottish independence.

Eyewhisker · 09/02/2019 07:14

Donkey - NI already differs from the rest of the UK as the population is half descended from British settlers (the DUP) and half descended from native Irish (Catholic/Sinn Féin.

It’s creation was dodgy under international law as UN rules are that colonial settlements do not qualify for self-determination. In other words, it is now illegal to invade a country, import lots of people and then say oh well the people want us to rule them.

But we are where we are and this means that NI is different from London. That is why anyone from NI automatically qualifies for two passports and there is an international peace treaty between two counties specifying how it works. The EU and Ireland want that to be respected.

The creation of NI was a historic wrong. NI can only exist in peace if both communities are equally respected. The UK only was tried after 1920 when we had 50 years of an apartheid state. We are not going back to that.

NeverTalksToStrangers · 09/02/2019 08:17

Eyewhisker Donkey has spoken though, and he/she is obviously an expert on it all.

We're very sorry to have kept you dancing donkey. You have a wee sit down now.

DonkeyAtemyHomework · 09/02/2019 08:27

What do you mean the EU and Ireland? Ireland is the EU.

DonkeyAtemyHomework · 09/02/2019 08:29

You mean the EU wants to honour the peace agreement and the UK wish they never ever took on NI?

NeverTalksToStrangers · 09/02/2019 08:33

You mean the EU wants to honour the peace agreement and the UK wish they never ever took on NI?

Took us on? Like we were abandoned at birth? Yeah, that's totally the way it happened. You seem to know everything.

DonkeyAtemyHomework · 09/02/2019 08:38

Well you're certainly acting like spoiled children.

PositivelyPERF · 09/02/2019 08:41

Please stop feeding the really obvious troll. You know that no matter what you say, it’s going to twist it.

DonkeyAtemyHomework · 09/02/2019 08:41

Cards on the table. If NI would behave, we could sort Brexit out no bother. But like the fly in the ointment, there you are. Threatening a return to violence if a border is imposed etc. It's tiring. I'm sick of it personally.

Eyewhisker · 09/02/2019 08:42

We’re not acting like spoiled children; we just want our current peace treaty to be respected. And yes, that does give NI special status - both in the UK, but recognising that it’s people are also Irish.

DonkeyAtemyHomework · 09/02/2019 08:43

I'm a troll now? Hah

DonkeyAtemyHomework · 09/02/2019 08:44

You like your special status.

the UK wish they never took on NI

This reveals an ignorance of Irish politics and history which is so complete it would be almost touching if it wasn’t for the fact that people like Donkey had a vote that led us to the current clusterfuck.

DonkeyAtemyHomework · 09/02/2019 08:49

Repent at leisure as they say...

Sakura7 · 09/02/2019 08:51

Donkey it's the DUP that are behaving like spoiled children, not the people of NI. Also your attitude towards toomuch is extremely rude, especially considering that NI was offered the best of both worlds - to stay in the UK but have checks occurring at ports, keeping the land border with ROI open but having an invisible customs border in the Irish Sea. Theresa May agreed to this in December 2017 and then backtracked when the DUP kicked off. The majority of people in NI are in favour of this option as it's the most practical solution, keeps the peace, and could give them an economic advantage. That's what toomuch is referring to. The DUP dinosaurs are ideological nutjobs though and don't care about any of that.

buckeejit · 09/02/2019 08:52

Who doesn't want peace! How that makes any of us spoilt I don't know. I do like my special status due to dual heritage though. I would prefer a border in the Irish Sea if we have to have one. I doubt anyone commenting on this thread is part of the terrorist organisations likely to restart violence if there's a hard border, however most of us who lived through the troubles haven't come out unscathed. I certainly don't want any of my family & friends to be put back in that situation again.

DonkeyAtemyHomework · 09/02/2019 08:55

And where is the DUP from?

Sakura7 · 09/02/2019 08:56

Donkey your ignorance is astounding. After all the pain the UK inflicted on NI how dare you tell them to "behave" when they haven't done anything wrong here (other than the DUP). You know nothing. Agree with a PP, the votes o ignorant people like you got us here.

DonkeyAtemyHomework · 09/02/2019 09:02

Ok, we're getting somewhere. So it's the Uk who inflicted this.
Yet it's Ireland (The Republic) who has to pay the price. Because people of NI can also decide they're Irish or maybe British, or maybe both! *Sigh

It's time NI people grew up. There's only so much people are going to put up with.
