AIBU to be worried about the merging of WatsApp, Facebook & Insta

I’m referring to the merging of messaging next year.

Im already worried about the fact that Facebook seems to hoovering up all the means of social networking like there’s no tomorrow but what if they have a way of cracking the end to end encryption WatsApp currently uses via a backdoor agreement?

Should I just ignore it or delete the apps and go back to writing to people using —quill — pen and paper ? grin]

I don't know enough about it to be worried, but if FB gains control of WhatsApp I'll not be using it any longer.

milienhaus · 05/02/2019 14:09

FB has owned whatsapp since 2014 Reagan?

Igotthemheavyboobs · 05/02/2019 14:10

It's so fucking annoying, I can't use Instagram becuase it auto links to my FB account. I have switched this option off but it still says 'people you may know' and they are all from my FB account.

If this happens with WhatsApp, I will no longer use it

@milienhaus

Ah well. Guess I'm screwed then.

A few of instagrams version of l people you may know have been former phone contacts of mine I must have either chatted to on FB messenger or WhatsApp years ago. Creepy as fuck, I hate it.

OutPinked extremely creepy. Ive had a plumber contact me via Facebook and WatsApp after i found him via Trusted Trader and asked him to quote for a new bathroom. I deleted his number after i turned down the quote but it seems to make no difference once they have your number, even though I lock both down as far as possible. Ive just ignored both messages as they were along the lines of “you’re gawjus, fancy a drink?” Hmm

I missed Facebook’s purchase of WhatsApp and Insta, otherwise I wouldnt have created accounts (which I did in 2016).

I dont know how but Facebook has in my ‘people you may know list’ someone I dated in 2005 who’s no longer in my email or phone contacts. Im guessing he still has my details and Facebook’s Algorithm thinks it’d be great to get us together again.

I just hate the fact that our details are stollen, stored and used in all sorts of ways we never imagined or agreed to. But theyre untouchable as everyone who could make it stop is making too much money.

I don't have fb, instagram or twitter, but I use whatapp. Will this affect me?

cardibach · 05/02/2019 19:29

I don’t care. All my friends are friends in real life. No security breaches and I’d have added them anyway.

OrcinusOrca · 05/02/2019 19:34

I've swapped to Telegram instead of WhatsApp because of this.

ForOldLandsEye · 06/02/2019 00:30

I’ve not heard of Telegram - who owns it?
