I can’t bring myself to watch the films, are they worth a try?

OP posts:
Thisisthelaststraw · 05/02/2019 03:27

Utter shite imo

Justagirlwholovesaboy · 05/02/2019 03:31

What I expected, thanks

I think i read the first book out of intrigue but when the film came out i saw people on facebook saying they were getting turned on in the cinema, it doesnt strike me as my type of film but after such a big fuss the idea of massive crowds watching it creeped me out tbh

MrsCatE · 05/02/2019 03:33

Unbelievable tripe.

Thisisthelaststraw · 05/02/2019 03:33

I’ve never watched the films just read the first book and half of the second. The writing is just appalling. I think she must say beguiling on every second page! (Only a slight exaggeration if any)

moredoll · 05/02/2019 03:36

Nope, read a comment from Hadley Freeman that saved me the bother.

Justagirlwholovesaboy · 05/02/2019 03:40

She did bite her lip a lot!

In my opinion very badly written, so much so that I gave up half way through.

But it’s important to remember that it is a novel. Not a lifestyle manual. The way some prople react, you would think it’s the latter.

crosser62 · 05/02/2019 03:56

Utter utter time wasting shite.
First chapter then no further.
I was annoyed that the author had wasted my time.
Don’t bother.
Literary diarrhoea.

Koalablue · 05/02/2019 03:56

I tried watching the movie. Got less than five minutes in and got bored.

WinkysTeatowel · 05/02/2019 03:58

I tried the Kindle sample of the first one, the writing was so appalling I couldn't get past a page or two.

FlagranceDirect · 05/02/2019 03:59

I work in a charity shop and we've had literally dozens and dozens and dozens of these books brought in over the years. It's the most donated set of books EVER. I still haven't read one, so cannot comment on the writing quality, although I can take a guess from the reviews I've seen. I've not seen the films either, so not much help from me.

Justagirlwholovesaboy · 05/02/2019 04:04

So reading it is a no then lol

Aquamarine1029 · 05/02/2019 04:09

I read the first 2 books just out of curiosity and they were utter shite. I will never watch the movies.

MsHopey · 05/02/2019 04:14

I read them all and thought they were fine.
Not going to lie, my collection of books is a bit on the juevenille side as I like easy reads, think twilight and morganville vampires. If it's not from the YA section I'm normally not reading it. So I might be the target audience.

MinniesMum1606 · 05/02/2019 04:27

I actually really liked the first book, I got really into the story but I wasn’t turned on or anything, as I’ve heard a few people saying, I just enjoyed the characters & the story, I liked that Anna was being persued by a man that had so many women after him, and women very unlike herself.

I was rooting for them as a couple by the end of the first book, but I was put off by a few people when I said that I was going to see the first film, I’m pretty sure that it came out around Valentine’s Day & my ex and I had made plans to see it, well I made the plans to see the film, my ex wasn’t bothered his arse!

It’s weird that you ask this question tonight because the second or third film is now on Netflix, or is this why you asked?

I like Jamie Dornan and I think he was definitley the right actor to play Grey, I’ve watched him in The Fall & he plays dark characters very well, and he’s a sexy fucker as I’m sure some of you will knowGrin

I think I read a wee bit of the second book and that’s as far as I got with the whole ‘50 Shades’ trilogy.

I heard the film was very cheesy and a big fat fucking flop.

mathanxiety · 05/02/2019 04:32

Lol FlagranceDirect I was browsing through the book section of my local second hand shop two days ago and there were four copies of this in a shelving unit about ten feet long, three shelves high. There were no other multiples.

MinniesMum1606 · 05/02/2019 04:34

I feel quite embarrassed now, I posted before I had read all the posts and I’m in a thread with sophisticated ladies, well some of ya anyhoo! Wink You probably laughed because I was rooting for this total unrealistic couple recreating their own brand of the karma sutra, haha, but I liked it, it was different, wasn’t keen on the Americanisms though but it was a story that was set in America with American characters, anyway it was a wee guilty pleasure of mine, at the time, everybody, I mean everybody was talking about it on Facebook and I didn’t want to be left out.Grin

budgetneeded · 05/02/2019 04:40

In no way shape or form will I support the abuse of women.

MinniesMum1606 · 05/02/2019 05:01

It was fiction though @budgetneeded, I get what you mean but by reading it then you wouldn’t have been supporting anything but the author, don’t take it so seriously.

MinniesMum1606 · 05/02/2019 05:02

I meant my comment in a lighthearted way @budgetneeded, just in case you thought otherwiseSmile

Claudia1980 · 05/02/2019 05:14

The first book is hot. He is a bit controlling but that isn’t as evident in the first book.

flumpybear · 05/02/2019 05:26

Films are beyond awful - even my husband said 'that's two hours of my life I'll never get back'
Books aren't well written IMO and left me feeling uncomfortable as he's the way he is because he essentially was groomed and abused by his mums friend - and he treats the woman in the way he does because of this - left me feeling sad/weird as it's all about an abused boy behind the story - I'd give them a body swerve

Effiewhaursmabaffies · 05/02/2019 05:31

I started the first book but deleted it from my kindle. I have romantic fiction addiction and will read all kinds of shite, but it was just so bad. Please don’t read it. Have a root canal, it’s less painful.
