I can’t bring myself to watch the films, are they worth a try?

OP posts:
Waveysnail · 05/02/2019 09:35

Nope. But saw second film before seeing first and it's not bad. First is bloody awful

CaptainJaneway62 · 05/02/2019 09:42

Would not/could not bring myself to read or watch any of this crap but that's just my opinion. Definitely not my type of thing!

HeyNannyNanny · 05/02/2019 09:44

I didn't make it through the whole first book.

The constant references to her "inner goddess" made me want to tear off my own skin, so for my own safety I threw away the book.

Ifartglitterybaubles · 05/02/2019 09:47

I read the first few chapters of 50 shades of shite before giving it away. Three chapters in and I couldn't force myself to read any more of that badly written crap.

PrismGuile · 05/02/2019 09:50

I read them all and liked them but I was 16 and will read almost anything tbh... probably wouldn't enjoy them as much now purely because I remember they weren't very well written.

verite · 05/02/2019 10:15

I read the first chapter but the writing was so appalling that I could not read anymore.

vampirethriller · 05/02/2019 10:19

Couldn't do more than a couple of pages.

MinniesMum1606 · 05/02/2019 10:19

It felt like the whole world was talking about ‘50 Shades of Grey’ back then, my pal & I went up to Tesco’s together to get our copies of the first book, and we were so excited to read itGrin

The first book wasn’t cheap, I’m sure I paid around £11 for it, imo it was worth every penny.

The ladies that are saying that the book is about the abuse of women, really need to lighten up, it wasn’t written to make a point about abuse, it was a bit of fun and the abuse, should’ve been taken with with a pinch of salt, there are plenty women that take part in BDSM and wholly enjoy it.

SauvingnonBlanketyBlanc · 05/02/2019 10:21

The 1st film was shite! We fast forwarded to the mucky bits to see what fuss was about then thought meh

MinniesMum1606 · 05/02/2019 10:31

Apparently Jamie Dornans real life wife was a wee bit jealous of some of the scenes in the first filmHmm and because of this, then there was no fully naked scenes, or something like this, I can’t remember exactly as it was a few years ago.

How could anyone be jealous of their OHs sex scenes when acting?! There’s cameramen all around them, it must be horrendous from an actors point of view.Blush

Waspnest · 05/02/2019 10:33

Wasn't there a piss taking thread on here years ago? I wonder if Bernard and Beverly are still blissfully in love?

Ellie56 · 05/02/2019 10:35

Nope. The reviews told me that all I needed to know. They sound an unbelievable load of shite, so I shouldn't think the films are any better.

PregnantSea · 05/02/2019 10:39

Absolute garbage. Don't waste your time

Confusedbeetle · 05/02/2019 10:40

@Budget need
"in no way shape or form will I support the abuse of women."
Here here. I was getting very depressed it took this long to find a post like yours. In the seventies we fought so hard for some equality and yet S and M sex prevails as if it were a good thing.
The levels of violence in families remains appalling. What has happened to people whose sexuality equates inflicting or r receiving pain and violence with pleasure?
I can only assume ignorance, for example those who fantasise about rape and dominance have never been truly hurt and frightened .
All posters can say is that the writing is rubbish,
Sometimes women are womens worst enemies. You need to listen to rape victims

Tinty · 05/02/2019 10:59

my Gran bought it for me for Xmas, the sick bastard.

That made me laugh out loud. Grin

I have read them, I thought they were dire, I kept reading to see if they would improve, it didn't happen.

But did no one else think Anna's character was so wet they wanted to slap her? She was like a sappy bloody 12 year old girl. Maybe I missed something but I couldn't believe she was so innocent of men at 21 or whatever she was supposed to be.

They are obviously very sheltered in America (I can't really remember much about the book, I think they were in America or at least not Britian).

There is nothing wrong with not having a lot of sexual experience at that age (or none) but surely she was severely naive for her age. Even if she hadn't had any experience she must have read books, seen films with sex scenes etc.

DoSomethingBob · 05/02/2019 11:13

Never read the books, totally not my thing but did compulsively read all the piss taking blogs and reviews. They made brilliant reading.

ShartGoblin · 05/02/2019 11:24

If you would like to read it but don't want to invest in the books try this website: www.fiftyshadesgenerator.com/

It's basically the same and generally quite amusing

Pk37 · 05/02/2019 11:31

The hype about all the books put me right off.
Normally illiterate nob heads going on about “mummy porn” and how they’re going to jump their “hubbies” when they get in from work . Made my stomach turn
So basically , no I didn’t .. heard they were badly written shite anyway

MinniesMum1606 · 05/02/2019 11:33

@ConfusedBeetle this is a thread about whether or not people like a fictional film based on its fictional book and you’ve went a bit feminist and I don’t understand why you can’t just see the book and the film for what it was.

If the writer was going for the ‘abused’ woman situation, and it wasn’t about the BDSM sex between 2 people that are very much attracted to one another, then as abuse happens in real life every day, to men, women & children, then why is it a ‘thing’ that a fictional story would have abuse in it? I just don’t get the seriousness in which your taking this book/film.

Does feminism have to be mentioned in lighthearted threads? I don’t think so and it makes the thread go a bit awry, there’s plenty threads about feminism issues and this isn’t one of them.

I’m not trying to start some sort of argument on the thread or anything, I’m just asking what’s the need for the seriousness is all.Wink

MikeUniformMike · 05/02/2019 11:35

I read the first book. It was poorly written but I kept going to see if there was a plot. There wasn't.
Not seen the film.

MinniesMum1606 · 05/02/2019 11:49

I must be quite stupid when it comes to books because so many of you have said that it was poorly written and I don’t remember thinking this way at the time, I’m sure it was 2011 when the book had just come out, or maybe it was sooner than that.

It can’t have been all that badly written as EL James got big with the book, and when your book is turned into a film that is shown in mainstream cinemas, then imo, you’ve made it.

I just thought the book was something different and it was a talking point near enough everywhere you went, so many women wanted their own Christian Grey to tie them up and spank their bums!Grin

ShartGoblin · 05/02/2019 11:52

In all this talk of abuse I would just like to point out that, in the book, the man was the victim of abuse. The reason he had an unhealthy relationship with sex was because he was abused as a child then raped by an older woman who was into BDSM when he was a teen and that helped him cope with the pain of his abusive childhood.

The woman in the book was given all of the facts upfront and asked to consent in writing before he even touched her.

The books are crap but I'm sick of seeing people spout that it's a book about a man abusing a woman, it just isn't.

RockyFlintstone · 05/02/2019 11:54

The first book is hot. He is a bit controlling but that isn’t as evident in the first book.

'Hot'? 😂

I only read the first book and I just couldn't carry on. Obviously adult content aside, it honestly read like it had been written by a perhaps slightly above average Year 4 child.

'Belinda Blinked' is obviously much better Wink

ShartGoblin · 05/02/2019 11:55

@RockyFlintstone

Belinda Blinked is the greatest literary masterpiece of our time and I thank my lucky stars that I live in a time where true wonders like this exist.

RockyFlintstone · 05/02/2019 12:01

The books are crap but I'm sick of seeing people spout that it's a book about a man abusing a woman, it just isn't.

Of course he is. He turns up at her parties and when she goes to visit her mum in another state, he sends creepy (and dull) emails, and at the end of the first book/film he beats her with a belt even though he knows she isn't enjoying it. Not abusive my arse.
