I can’t bring myself to watch the films, are they worth a try?

Exactly @ShartGoblin, my sentiments too.

Iooselipssinkships · 05/02/2019 12:03

Read first chapter and put it down. It's also very similar/a rip off of The Secretary (which is a film, might be based on a book but not sure) Give that a watch, I loved it.

RockyFlintstone · 05/02/2019 12:03

A totally functional and healthy relationship Hmm

boatyardblues · 05/02/2019 12:04

I read all of them because I have a tendency to read shite books and young adult fiction for relaxation when I am very, very busy at work. They are badly written, the sex is quite monotonous and dull, Christian Grey is an abusive, controlling arse and Anastasia naive, impressionable and quite boring. The most exciting aspect was having staff that make all the household stuff magically happen and a helicopter so you don’t have to sit in traffic. At the time I read them, I had 2 small children, a very hectic full-time+ job and a boring commute. The staff and the helicopter were pure escapism. The dull, workmanlike sex not so much, though I probably could have tolerated it if it meant someone else took over the childcare, ironing & cooking. Grin

Yes I'll agree that he was emotionally abusive, she dumped him for it and he ultimately grew as a person. I guess my frustration is that his character was totally messed up as the result of years of abuse and people that have not read the book keep spouting that it's about the abuse of a woman. I think the book is about how devastating childhood abuse can be and that true love can heal all wounds (I'm not suggesting that's true to real life)

Beating her with the belt was not abusive. If you're in a BDSM relationship and you agree on a safe word then don't use the safe word it doesn't make the beater an abuser.

MinniesMum1606 · 05/02/2019 12:08

What the hell does it matter what the book was about, this thread is about whether you have read the 50
Shades books.Hmm

RockyFlintstone · 05/02/2019 12:14

Beating her with the belt was not abusive. If you're in a BDSM relationship and you agree on a safe word then don't use the safe word it doesn't make the beater an abuser.

She was obviously upset and not enjoying herself and he continued. That's not BDSM. She dumps him immediately afterwards and he manipulates her into coming back.

I haven't read the other books, but from what I gather, her whole role is to 'heal him' from his abusive childhood.

ShartGoblin · 05/02/2019 12:15

What the hell does it matter what the book was about

Of course it does!

Ultimately this book was about how, if you meet a millionaire, your vagina becomes so permanently lubed that you may have something stuffed there every 5 minutes.

Alternatively, she is from the Marvel universe and got the really shit superpower.

BumbleBeee69 · 05/02/2019 12:22

I didn't read the books.

elloelloello · 05/02/2019 12:25

I read the first one, thought it was rubbish and didn’t bother with the rest

Normally I’ll read any old shite

bookmum08 · 05/02/2019 12:50

If you take the sex part out of their relationship I found Christian was a very creepy and controlling man. He tells her what to wear (buying the clothes for her), what to eat, when to eat, when to sleep, what car to have, he invents a job for her so he can keep track of her work and (my favourite!!) tells her what birth control to use and because she is so thick she doesn't seem to understand how it works and becomes pregnant and when he finds out he has a temper tantrum. Horrible.

DobbyLovesSocks · 05/02/2019 13:26

I've read all three, watched all the movies and read the two books from his point of view. Am looking forward to her releasing the third from his point of view. I enjoyed them and don't particularly care what others think of them. I also enjoy Harry Potter and Twilight

FWIW I have read HP, Twilight and FSOG several times and never bore of it.

The worst movie. Ever. Acting is mediocre at best. I hate Jamie Doran now. If I'd seen him in any other movie other than the fifty shades of shit series, I might have even liked him.

Schmoobarb · 05/02/2019 13:30

I read the first one out of curiosity, dire.

User12879923378 · 05/02/2019 13:30

Only worth reading if you read them along with this chapter by chapter takedown

jennytrout.com/?p=3208

Or this one

redlemonade.blogspot.com/p/fifty-shades-of-tedious-fuckery.html?m=1

They are diabolical. Not sexy. Disturbing in their approach to child abuse and to BDSM (not exactly an aficionado but am fairly sure that's not how it is supposed to work). Jenny Trout has written novels (starting with "The Boss") which are supposed to set out how a BDSM relationship should work and they are a bit more fun and much better written although it still all looks like quite a lot of work.

YouSayPotatoesISayVodka · 05/02/2019 13:32

I read the first one because everyone else was reading it but my god, it was fucking dreadful. I have never wanted to do violence to any fictional character as much as I did to the inner bloody goddess.

Never bothered with the other 2. The bookshelves in the charity shops near me are rammed with copies, all in rather excellent condition Hmm

DorothyZbornak · 05/02/2019 13:34

I read the first book which wasn't going to set the literary world on fire, but the film! Dear Jesus, there's shite and shite but that just took the biscuit

Auntiepatricia · 05/02/2019 13:34

So so bad. And completely wrong about the way a relationship like that would work. Pure tripe and very unattractive.

anxiousbundle · 05/02/2019 13:36

Yep- around when I was 13/14 (enjoyed them then) now I'm 20- utter cringe fest!!! And really badly written lol

The films aren't much better.

I have read all the books and I have watched the movies.

The books are written very badly, a lot of repetitive text. The first was just a Twilight fan fiction though, so knowing that I wasn't expecting miracles.

The movies, in my opinion, are better than the books.

I prefer the Crossfire series about Gideon and Eva however. Gutted it didn't end up as a tv series.

YouSayPotatoesISayVodka · 05/02/2019 13:43

I haven’t watched the 3 movies either (yuck! No thank you!) but the honest movie trailers on YouTube told me everything I needed to know.

cookiemon666 · 05/02/2019 13:45

Nope, and never will
