I’m in Glasgow next week for a few days - part work but will have some leisure
Any suggestions for museums (other than kelvin grove n rennie mackintosh?
Antiques centres or jewellery?
Spa break or day - wouldn’t mind recommendations for nails or beauty treatments
I really need to chill - help me please

The People’s Palace is my favourite museum in Glasgow - shows how people in Glasgow lived through the years, love a bit of social history. It’s near Glasgow Green.

letsghostdance · 03/02/2019 01:10

The people's Palace is closed just now whole they renovate it and also, in an absolutely terrible move, demolish the Winter Gardens.

The Lighthouse is interesting, it's sort of an architecture museum. It's in the centre of the city.

AgentProvocateur · 03/02/2019 01:11

I like the anatomy museum at Glasgow uni, but it’s a bit gruesome.

wafflyversatile · 03/02/2019 01:15

Sharmanka kinetic theatre at the trongate is mesmerising.

Beeziekn33ze · 03/02/2019 01:15

As well as the brilliant People's Palace I enjoyed seeing the Burrell Collection and the building it's in. I seem to remember it's out of town. I've only visited once but Glasgow was a very pleasant surprise, time I came back!

ContadoraExplorer · 03/02/2019 01:23

The Burrell is also closed right now, at least, it was when we were in the park a few weeks ago. Kelvingrove is always good for a wander.

sherrysfortea · 03/02/2019 01:28

Nothing to add but jealous because Glasgow is beautiful. Glasgow university is like Hogwarts so definitely worth a visit if you can make it not look weird

ThanksForAllTheFish · 03/02/2019 01:32

The Riverside Museum, The Tall ship (just outside) and the Gallery of Modern Art are other places worth visiting. Almost all Glasgow museums are free entry (only one or two require payment - if I remember correctly the st mungo museum charges for entry) so I would say make the most of that if you are not wanting to spend a lot.

The west end is worth a visit. Byers Road is full of charity shops and lanes off the side you will find a lot of vintage shops selling clothing, records, jewellery, furniture etc. Ashton lane is a nice place to stop for a drink and lunch if you are over that way.

The west end is easy to get to by underground from the city centre. Our underground system is just the a loop/ ring so really easy to navigate. From city centre it’s only a few stops.

I can’t really recommend nail or beauty places as I don’t go to any. There are plenty around. If you are staying in the city centre then you have a great choice of shops. Argyle Arcade is the place to go for Jewellery. Right beside that is Princes Square which is where you will find most of the higher end / designer shops (some also around the Merchant City area).

Don't know what days you're there but this is VERY interesting

I’m jealous! I love Glasgow and used to go all the time before we had kids.

AgentProvocateur · 03/02/2019 01:47

Nail & beauty - highly recommend Aveda salon / James Dunn House, just off George square. jdhlifestyle.co.uk/

EunikeLavender · 03/02/2019 01:48

In case you hadn't heard about it, Kelvingrove has just had a da Vinci exhibition open this week so we're planning on going to that soon. We always go to the Clutha for lunch when we're there as the food is great. DH has also been roped into taking DD to the Purrple Cat Cafe on our next visit too.

If you head to Finnieston there's a great wee bit there called the Hidden Lane, there's a gorgeous tearoom there and some amazing wee shops from crafters, jewellers and the likes, definitely worth a visit.

tipsytrainee46 · 03/02/2019 01:54

For nails in Glasgow, I can't recommend NAF! Salon highly enough. The girls are absolute artists!! (And they bring their dogs to work for you to cuddle)

LagunaBubbles · 03/02/2019 02:02

I know you said no to Kelvingrove but they have the dinosaur bones exhibition on just now.

Can't recomend any nails or spa place but go on Groupon and you will find something!

House for a Music Lover designee by CRM.

ashvivienne · 03/02/2019 04:36

Blythswood is always an enjoyable experience for a spa day

Gre8scott · 03/02/2019 06:37

Wafflyverstile
I went to college woth the son of sharmankia and had the weridest night out in there i was so drunk and i never get drunk youve just beought back a fab memory thanks.
Gladgows a museum by itself just walk about and go for coffees . Its the best city om earth rainbow room is a good place for pampering

toomuchtooold · 03/02/2019 06:57

demolish the Winter Gardens

Oh god, you're joking me. That's council-sponsored vandalism is what that is. What a shame.

FurzeandHarebells · 03/02/2019 07:09

I’d recommend Blythswood Square Hotel for a spa too.

The Huntarian, the Museum
of Modern Art, the Provans Lordship and the Riverside are all well worth seeing.

If you are at the Huntarian (at Glasgow Uni) there are all sorts of wee lanes with interesting shops off Byres Rd.

Hillhead Underground station will get you back to the town centre.

This site is very handy

+1 for the people's palace museum.

Amazing history of Glasgow and its residents.

Start off in the centre, walk to the North side river's edge and head east. You'll walk through Glasgow Green an in the middle there's the people's palace.

MaggieAndHopey · 03/02/2019 08:03

I don't think they're demolishing the Winter Gardens - they are closing 'indefinitely' whilst the council works out how to pay for the £5 million repairs needed. Hopefully if we can get some public interest going there might be some fundraising opportunities.

Bluebird1234 · 03/02/2019 08:06

‘Mackintosh at the Willow’on Sauchiehall St is good and has an interesting museum attached. It was the original Kate Cranston tearoom and she employed CRM to design it. The building was saved by a local businesswoman who then formed a trust to rebuild it.

twattymctwatterson · 03/02/2019 08:09

For a spa day, the Blythswood is lovely but if you can travel out with Glasgow, the Carrick spa at Cameron House is my favourite. It's about 50 minutes away in the car but worth it for the view from the infinity pool

36degrees · 03/02/2019 08:12

I second JDH, it's not a full spa (Blythswood would be my recommendation if you want a pool/steam etc, and is regularly on Groupon if you check it out before you visit) but it's lovely and relaxing in the spa area downstairs, and the staff are lovely.
