Posting for traffic
I’m in Glasgow next week for a few days - part work but will have some leisure
Any suggestions for museums (other than kelvin grove n rennie mackintosh?
Antiques centres or jewellery?
Spa break or day - wouldn’t mind recommendations for nails or beauty treatments
I really need to chill - help me please

There's the Glasgow Police Museum in Bell Street - that's worth a look.

If you want to see a film, there's the very cosy and cool Art Deco Glasgow Film Theatre in Rose Street just off Sauchiehall St.

The Provest Lordship just beside the Royal Infirmary is Glasgow's oldest surviving house and worth a visit. Slightly further afield on the South Side is the Scotland Street School Museum, which was designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

And then, of course, an oldie but a goodie is the Tenement House Museum in Buccleuch St, again just off Sauchiehall St.

And this might be a bit of a niche taste, but I always love a nice tramp around the Necropolis.

Following!

Another vote for Blythswood, it’s just bliss in there and nice and handy right in the city centre too Grin

showmeshoyu · 03/02/2019 08:58

The west end is easy to get to by underground from the city centre.

I've worked in Glasgow for a year and I've been to quite a few different places, including the west end etc. I had to look up the Glasgow underground. I had no idea one existed Blush

letsghostdance · 03/02/2019 09:01

The current plan is to demolish the Winter Gardens. The council's spin makes it sound like the money is to renovate the Palace and the gardens but the intention is to demolish it because its too expensive to refurbish. Most of the plants have already been removed and the glass has been painted so passers by can't see in. I've been working with community councils to try and see what can be done to stop this, but people aren't as interested as you would think

Everyman cinema has just opened in Princes Sq

The funny thing is that none of my native colleagues have mentioned it either! Weird.

"And then, of course, an oldie but a goodie is the Tenement House Museum in Buccleuch St, again just off Sauchiehall St."

This is worth a visit, as is everywhere else mentioned on this thread.

I want to go to Glasgow again now.

Jewellery-wise, not sure what you're into/like but I would get the underground into the West End and get off at Hillhead. There is a jewellery shop on Creswell Lane called Nancy Smillie. Also, on Downside Lane just off Byres Rd, there are a few vintage shops with jewellery. The Byres Rd area is worth a wander anyway and is just around the corner from the university. Not that far from the Kelvingrove and Riverside museums too. Would also recommend the open top bus tour if the snow stops! Enjoy Smile

Tucobenedicto · 03/02/2019 09:46

Buchanan street is the best shopping area where you will find princess square..great shops and restaurants there too..if it's not too cold take the open top bus tour..it leaves from George square and goes round the usual site all the way up to the west end..if you take the bus tour try and get off at the SECC and go to the rooftop bar at the Radisson red hotel..amazing views

JaceLancs · 03/02/2019 09:59

Thank you everyone some really helpful suggestions
Wish I was going for a week now!
I’ve only been to Glasgow twice before but did find the underground useful
Visited kelvin grove and mackintosh places last time

Another vote for the police museum 👍

If it were me I'd be hopping on the tour bus as most if the things mentioned are on the route

MacarenaFerreiro · 03/02/2019 10:02

Antiques centres - there is a cavernous one called Glasgow City Antiques which is near the SECC, parking outside if you have the car or close to Anderston station. It's massive, lots of dealers with everything from jewellery to furniture.

FoofFighter · 03/02/2019 10:15

Transport museum and the shop next to it are really interesting

What about the underground tour at Glasgow Central Station ? Never been but it looks great.

Butchyrestingface · 03/02/2019 11:23

Ooooh, yeah. Done that. Worth the trip. The guide is very eccentric and gallous and talks a good game with his legendary knowledge of the station's history.

StreetwiseHercules · 03/02/2019 11:30

“The people's Palace is closed just now whole they renovate it and also, in an absolutely terrible move, demolish the Winter Gardens.”

The Winter Gardens aren’t being demolished. They are closed for the foreseeable future due to structural concerns whilst a solution is sought.

Butchyrestingface · 03/02/2019 11:34

showme whaaaat?! The clockwork orange is a Glaswegian icon!

Do you mean the underground? If so, I had to google that to find out what it meant.

I have never heard the underground referred to as the Clockwork Orange, and Wikipedia - that fount of all knowledge and wisdom - suggests the name is rarely used outside the press.

raviolidreaming · 03/02/2019 11:42

Me too 👍

letsghostdance · 03/02/2019 11:46

@streetwisehercules They're closed indefinitely while they try and find £7m to repair. They'll leave them in that state to degrade further and then they'll tear them down. This is Glasgow City Council we're talking about. There's no way they're realistically going to try and save them. The city don't care or invest in the east end sustainably.

BluebellCockleshell123 · 03/02/2019 11:49

Evening spa at the Blythswood is lovely and atmospheric.

Sharmanka is hypnotic and strange and like nothing else you'll see anywhere.

GOMA modern art gallery is good for a look around - free and right in the city centre.
Also The Lighthouse is interesting - it's an exhibition space right in the city centre in a Rennie Mackintosh building that used to be the home of the Glasgow Herald.

Grosvenor cinema in the West end is ace - small and cosy.

The Tron theatre is central and usually has interesting plays on. Or the Tramway.

epcot15 · 03/02/2019 11:52

I was just about to say the Necropolis but I see someone else has beat me to it! If it's a nice day it's a lovely walk and some great views.

I live here and have done most of the things suggested but there's some places I've not tried like the police museum so I'll be making a list for school holidays!

If you're prepared to travel a wee bit, Summerlee Museum in Coatbridge is well worth a trip for the weans and the adults. There's an old style steam train you get to ride on, and a 20 minute tour down an old mocked up mine shaft to see how the conditions the miners worked in.

The old miners cottages have been remodelled to represent the decades and conditions the workers would have lived in from the 1820s through to the 1980s.

So interesting I've been twice. Smile
