AIBU to be so sick of this stupid country’s snow coverage?

I’m so fedup of watching reports on the BBC News at 10 (and other channels do the same, no doubt) about how Britain has “ground to a halt” over two inches of snow Hmm. It’s so cringeworthy - and it’s actually borderline offensive when you consider the truly adverse weather that people in the US are enduring right now. AIBU?

It's better than hearing about Brexit though!

BringBiscuits · 01/02/2019 22:27

Me too. It’s the same every year. Some schools closed near us this week and there was barely enough snow to leave a footprint in!

FunkyCrunky · 01/02/2019 22:27

Two inches of snow? Where? We've had none here in Nottingham.

I've seen more snow in my frost-free freezer! 😂

2sandwhichesplease · 01/02/2019 22:28

I agree. We lost a lot of business last 2 days. Lots of cancellations as people were worried about snow....won't be paying my bills this month...

APurpleSquirrel · 01/02/2019 22:30

I’m in the South West & we’ve had considerablely more than 2in snow! Some poor people got stuck on Bodmin overnight in their cars! Yes, snow can happen every year but not everywhere in the UK. It is newsworthy, but if you don’t want to hear about it, don’t watch the news 🤷‍♀️

goldpendant · 01/02/2019 22:31

So annoying! And the folks who ham it all up, and how bad the driving/commute will be, just to get a day off!

Every year it snows people. It gets cold too. It's winter! It's typical of our British obsession with the weather though.

Amanduh · 01/02/2019 22:32

You don’t have to compare things to make one worse than the other. That’s a ridiculous mindset. We aren’t set for snow like the US. Also, I haven’t seen anywhere that has ground to a halt except the places where the snow has literally been in the way.
It’s like when it was 35c here in the summer and people said we were pathetic because it’s 42 in Dubai and Florida and they don’t complain (in their pools and 24/7 air con.) Understand the infrastructure!

Dongdingdong · 01/02/2019 22:32

Two inches of snow? Where? We've had none here in Nottingham.*

True. It’s been more like two millimetres! Which makes the whole thing even more ridiculous. Surely there must be more important stories for the BBC, ITV etc to investigate?

My favourite was a guy on the news tonight who said the only was he could describe it was “like Armageddon” Hmm

Dongdingdong · 01/02/2019 22:34

People in London (where I live) were “warned to get home before 9pm last night due to a snow bomb on its way”. I woke up this morning to find about two flakes of snow on the pavement. It’s just embarrassing and so silly!

Amanduh · 01/02/2019 22:34

Also, the last two bbc reports that have been on, the drifts were 8 inches and the temperatures were -15... hardly offensive!

Hugglessnuggles · 01/02/2019 22:34

But we don’t have the resources like those in America to get around. Yes they are worse now because it’s something they’ve rarely experienced. But on the whole, yes their days go on as normal, when they have 4x’s and more the amount of snow as us. But they have those resources that aid them to get around, we just have gritters and they can’t always get everywhere.

Maybe that will change if more snow is predicted every year and it’s becomes our norm🤷🏻‍♀️

BeverlyHillsCop · 01/02/2019 22:35

YANBU. It is quite ridiculous, all schools closed in our area (SE) and approx 2/3 inches which is laughable. The side roads had snow but the main roads were clear because of gritters doing their job. I think it’s more to do with the risk of being sued if a child slips on ice and hurts themselves rather than the actual snow and the compensation culture. When I was a child (80’s) there was a particularly hard winter and I remember being walked to school by my Dad in knee deep snow.

QuestionableMouse · 01/02/2019 22:36

I'd rather listen to snow than more Brexit crap.

Dongdingdong · 01/02/2019 22:36

the last two bbc reports that have been on, the drifts were 8 inches

Ooooh, 8 inches! It’s called winter FGS! Hmm

I agree with BIWI. Completely.
More snow please. Grin

Sandsnake · 01/02/2019 22:36

It’s not ‘offensive’... come on! And there was loads in the south west. I don’t mind it, but I’m quite interested in weather. As pp said - definitely beats Brexit!

Dongdingdong · 01/02/2019 22:39

I think the news report that took the biscuit was the BBC London reporter who was giving us a breathless update from the gritting station last night, assuring us that they were “fully prepared” for the coming avalanche. There was not one flake of snow in shot.

South west here, have walked to and from work today (3 miles each way) because council cuts have meant barely any roads have been gritted. Some drifts went up over my wellies, and it was a general coverage of 6/7 inches. Whilst it might not effect you with your 24 hour local supermarkets and and wonderfully clear gritted roads, it can literally cut people off in rural communities. Surely just scroll on by or turn it off if it doesn’t interest you

Dodie66 · 01/02/2019 22:43

4 inches of snow here in `Hampshire and roads not gritted, cars and vans stuck. Nobody can get out of our road so yes we have ground to a halt here. More interesting than Brexit though 🙂

Dodie66 · 01/02/2019 22:43

And we had a power cut in our village

PickAChew · 01/02/2019 22:47

Gridlock in Durham, this morning, for the first snow of this wave. It all came at once, though.

greendale17 · 01/02/2019 22:51

@Dongdingdong you are moaning at coverage for an event that happens once or twice a year. Get a life!

Tensixtysix · 01/02/2019 22:52

Basingstoke is cut off. Is that bad enough for you?
