To go to the cinema alone

Is that sad? I have a day off this week and havent had a day (minus work) without my DS since he was born 16 months ago. I am debating going to see a movie and have a nice lunch somewhere but I will be alone. No idea whats even on mind!

I dont have many friends at all (almost zero in fact) and anyone I do know will be working.

Is that sad?

as a family we are in the cinema 3-4 times a week, the local cinema is only £2.50 each

i also go alone weekly, being a 24 hour carer to 2 kids that dont sleep i get no time to myself and this is the only time i get a few hours alone

if there is nothing to see i do miss my weekly trips

I work part time, don't get out much in the evenings as I'm a single mum. I often go on Thursday or Friday for the lunch time showings, take a sandwich and flask of tea. Saw Mary Queen of Scots yesterday.

lerrimknowyouretheyir · 01/02/2019 22:58

I went alone the other day. Saw Beautuful Boy. Dark subject matter. I like the look of Green Book.

madeyemoodysmum · 01/02/2019 23:01

I went to see the nutcracker film and had the whole theatre to myself. Bliss.

I also went to the 2nd train spotting movie and loved that too. I think it’s fine especially during the day

mmgirish · 02/02/2019 00:16

I love going to the cinema by myself. Also I nice quiet lunch in a restaurant is great too!

JellyBears · 02/02/2019 00:25

I go alone a lot, none of my friends like scary or monster/dinosaur/ action hero Films. And I do.

Palaver1 · 02/02/2019 01:20

It used to be a place for couples and all that crap but I have been going on my own off and on .stranger the first time ,but soon got used to it and it’s quite empowering.

SpoonBlender · 02/02/2019 01:30

DP and I like totally different types of movies, we often go out alone to see things independently. Funny really, as we watch the same sorts of telly snuggled up together on the sofa.

Returning2thesceneofthecrime · 02/02/2019 05:58

It’s great to go on your own!

You don’t have to debate the choice of movie or whose turn it is to decide. Don’t have to share popcorn. And you can enjoy the movie and not have your opinion of it coloured by someone else’s thoughts.

hazell42 · 02/02/2019 06:16

I go alone all the time, and a lot of other people do too. Why would it be weird?

GorgeousPie · 02/02/2019 06:20

I LOVE going alone. Saw The Favourite this week, it was good!

JustAboutGettingBy · 02/02/2019 08:29

Thanks. I will have a look at catching an early one. I am so out of touch with movies....

I go to the cinema alone regularly, it's great. Honestly, nobody cares (and even if they did, so what?) Go for it, have fun :)

Veescience · 02/02/2019 08:44

Odeon do Silver Screen which is movie- morning or afternoon showing of an film that has been released previously. Tea or coffee and biscuits plus film for £3. You couldn’t buy the tea or coffee alone for that so great value. Lots of people go alone too.

Oblomov19 · 02/02/2019 08:45

I like it and regularly do it. In fact prefer it.

JenniferJareau · 02/02/2019 08:45

Not at all sad.

Littlebelina · 02/02/2019 08:46

I love going to the cinema and ended up going alone a lot last year whilst on leave. Our local does a brilliant coffee and even wine.

Now have dd2 so can't go as easily (going to attempt baby cinema soon)

Birdsgottafly · 02/02/2019 08:50

There are always loads of people on their own when I go the Cinema, with my youngest (21). It's always to watch a horror.

I do go to the Theatre alone. When I turned 50 and a few of my favourite Clebs had died around my age, I thought that life is too short to miss out.

A period of serious illness, has also given me the same mindset.

Ive been doing trips alone. It's great not having to compromise.

longwayoff · 02/02/2019 08:52

I live just over the road from a lovely Everyman cinema and it's an absolute pleasure to watch a film uninterrupted by company. Is my secret vice on a wet weekday afternoon, it's like a private screening.

Meangirls36 · 02/02/2019 08:52

I always watch movies alone. Try the favourite if you like historical movies.

Variousartists · 02/02/2019 08:54

I went last week in the daytime. Thoroughly enjoyed Stan and Ollie. There was one group of retirement age people and a few single women dotted about. Very civilised!

chatwoo · 02/02/2019 08:56

I do... The last time was on Thursday, and I saw The Mule. It was an independent cinema, with a bar, so I had a little bottle of sparking wine (instead of my usual big pack of Maltesers!)

TheGlitterFairy · 02/02/2019 08:57

Not sad to do - I’ve been on my own and happy to go for lunch on my own too. Enjoy!

GreenShadow · 02/02/2019 08:57

I not only went alone once (well I actually have a few times), but once was literally "alone" in the cinema. Had a whole showing all to myself. Weird feeling.

bluetheskyis · 02/02/2019 08:58

Go see The Favourite - 3 amazing performances by the 3 actresses...
