To think they shouldn’t be advertising that they’re stocking up for Brexit?

So with Brexit approaching, some people (including me) are concerned about the possibility of food shortages etc afterwards.

One of my Facebook friends has started posting photos on Facebook of them stocking up.

Photos of crates and crates filled with a variety of tinned food, dried food, UHT milk, bottled water and other drinks, toiletries, medicines etc.

With comments along the lines of “we’re stocking up for Brexit, we’ll be ok”

I think they’re daft.
Not about the stocking up, I’m buying in extra stuff just in case too - but I think it’s daft to be telling hundreds of people on Facebook.

If things get to the point where shelves are bare and they’re reliant on their stash of food, then there’s now loads of other people who know they’ve got loads of non-perishable food stashed. People who might be very hungry.

AIBU to think that telling everyone about your food hoarding is a really bad idea if you’re planning for possible food shortages?

I won't be embarrassed at all if the prepping proves unnecessary, why on earth would I be? Embarrassed about taking a sensible precaution for the good of my small children? Embarrassed about having a nice stock of food that we'll use up over the following months? Odd.

PositivelyPERF · 01/02/2019 23:15

Those of you that are mocking or, weirdly, taking prepping very personally, are aware that many of those doing it, will save money, don’t you? Even if brexit is the glorious future, you envision, prices will go up and when you’re paying more for your beans (incidentally they’re grown abroad), we will have a breathing space and we can gradually budget for the increase in our outgoings.

While you’re walking around your well stocked supermarkets Hmm cursing about prices and saying “I told you there’d be plenty of food”, I’ll be in my warm house, preparing food from my well stocked larder. Either way, I’m happy.

If zombies appear, we will all need shotguns. Let's get the government to start distributing them.
Aim at the brain.

bellinisurge · 02/02/2019 07:34

I'm glad none of you has car insurance or home insurance and doesn't wear a seatbelt because you are a safe driver. Think of the money you save and the confidence you have in everyone else to make things lovely for you.
I hope none of you ever buys a 3for2 offer because that just runs down the stock of shampoo and shows a distinct lack of faith in our retail sector.

WaxMyBalls · 02/02/2019 08:22

I think we may need to consider including zombie apocalypse as a specific category on the bingo card.

I am turned off by the ill educated shite spouted by the vocal remainers on here

This is so batshit it made me smile. Ill-educated and remainers aren't words one normally finds together. I personally find my stash of tinned goods very arousing Grin

YANBU

We’ve told no one, other than my sister who will be sharing our cupboard and is sworn to secrecy. We have a few Brexiteers in our family and they’ll be the first CFs round ours for dinner if they knew.

bellinisurge · 02/02/2019 08:32

I love the idea that Brexit will stop people being cheeky fuckers. And the idea that people will be cheeky fuckers is somehow unpatriotic.
More batshit craziness.

WaxMyBalls · 02/02/2019 08:34

Just realised I never answered the OP... I wouldn't do it but I'm glad they are. The more public discussion of this, the better. Both for averting a no deal in the first place, and FWIW I'd place the chance at less than 50%, and for mitigating the effects as far as possible if we do end up with one.

MamaLovesMango · 02/02/2019 08:38

The particular people I have in mind are CFs with it without Brexit. Nothing will ever change their cheeky fuckery.

Helmetbymidnight · 02/02/2019 09:00

Im still laughing at the brexitteer with vast quantities of food in their outhouse condemning anyone thinking of getting in any extra food.

It's one for the Daily Mash that.

bellinisurge · 02/02/2019 09:03

That was choice wasn't it Helmet.

As for cheeky fuckers, wrap it in a cloak of patriotism and it's suddenly not cheeky fuckery. Keep your eyes on the cheeky fuckers.

My local Co-Op sells British wine. It’s not bad for £3.99
Maybe I should be patriotic and stockpile some?

We now have continuity trade agreements with Australia, New Zealand, Chile and South Africa (Eastern and Southern Africa signed 31st Jan) - one product they all export to the UK is wine. Priorities.

WaxMyBalls · 02/02/2019 09:40

Lmao

HoraceCope · 02/02/2019 09:42

i am stockpiling my waist line, i will be fine for some time Wink

borntobequiet · 02/02/2019 09:42

Impressed by the comparison between those who think there’s a possibility of food shortages as a result of a no deal Brexit and people who believe the Earth is flat.

Fishcakey · 02/02/2019 09:45

As long as I can get a cup of tea and some toast I think I'll live! I can't understand the panic.

bellinisurge · 02/02/2019 09:53

Everyone is exactly the same as you @Fishcakey . No one has small children or cares for the elderly or has a more complicated situation than you.Hmm

Oysterbabe · 02/02/2019 09:57

Also I haven't seen any panic. No doubt a man will be along shortly to call us hysterical though.

themoomoo · 02/02/2019 10:02

helmet you've been laughing for 12 hours. impressive. I think I explained quite clearly why I have lots of food and also why i find it ridiculous that some people are stockpiling specifically for Brexit but it all seems a little hard for you to understand.

Lockheart · 02/02/2019 10:02

I can’t understand why people are rubbishing the idea that we may have shortages for a while.

Take the politics out of it, forget it’s about Brexit for a moment, and think about what will happen on March 29 in the event of no deal.

Overnight, there will be huge changes to the way we can import food from one of our major suppliers. The change in how we can treat these imports at customs will be huge.

Now, it is possible that the government could do all the additional work now, create all the paperwork, train the customs officers, get additional staff on board, and generally make sure they are prepared for this change so that there is a seamless overnight transition.

But do you trust this government to be that competent?

I don’t. And I don’t think it’s silly to say that making huge changes to the way our ports need to operate is going to cause logistical problems. Doesn’t really matter if that change comes from Brexit or something else. It’s not scaremongering, it’s thinking about the practicalities of the situation.

TheElementsSong · 02/02/2019 10:04

Yes, just to clarify to new arrivals to the thread, it works like this:

If you buy extra stuff because it's on offer and you're a thrifty person who is generally careful with money, no problem.

If you buy extra stuff because there might be bad weather coming and you've been snowed in before, no problem.

If you buy extra stuff because you're an old-fashioned organised sort who likes a well-stocked pantry and like menu-planning and batch-cooking, no problem.

If you buy extra stuff because you're concerned about supply chain disruption in the wake of a No Deal crash-out Brexit, YOUR NEGATIVE THINKING WILL MAKE A BREXIT FAIRY DIE!!!!

themoomoo · 02/02/2019 10:06

elements
I think that's the third time you've copied and pasted that: it wasn't remotely funny the first time.
Got anything new to add to the discussion?
