Just want an opinion if I should complain or not?
I ordered a veggie meal on a plane and they told me they didn't have one for me.
Showed them my confirmation which said Asia Vegetarian on my booking.
They blamed my travel agent and just shrugged, not their fault , nothing they can do.
I was offered fish or chicken instead.
This was a 10 hour flight!!
I ate bread rolls and cheese.
WWYD complain or not.?

@PigsDOfly
'm a bit puzzled, if you are a vegetarian and don't eat fish, which is fair enough, how come you were willing to eat cheese? Was it vegetarian cheese?

I'm not trying to be goady, it's a genuine question.

If you didn't get what you ordered then yes, I would complain.

Cheese on the whole is made with vegetarian rennet , so yes it is vegetarian
are you thinking Vegan?

I feel for you OP I went to an expensive ball where they forgot our vegetarian order , we had to ask for bread rolls as they really couldnt care

I try to eat Vegan , thank god for chips

otheractivities · 01/02/2019 14:45

Op , I am amazed at the amount of stick you are getting on here , at the end of the day you have paid for a meal you didnt get . Plus most people would be hungry and pissed off over the lack of food

Elfinablender · 01/02/2019 14:48

Yeah, I'd be pissed off if all I had in ten hours was a few bread rolls.

Stringofpearls · 01/02/2019 14:49

Its annoying but probably not something to be massively offended by, fair enough to complain though. Be aware that if you go to Spain they will sometimes offer a vegetarian chicken or fish! I lived there for several years and never got used to that, fortunately it didn't matter to me as I'm not a veggie, I just knew people who were.

YouLikeTheBadOnesToo · 01/02/2019 14:50

YANB unreasonable to complain about them missing your meal. But YABVU to be offended. I’ve been vegetarian since I was 14, I’ve lost count of the times I’ve been asked if I eat/offered fish. “I just say no thank you, I don’t eat fish either” It’s never occurred to me to be offended! Seems like a waste of time to still be thinking about it to be honest.

Jarstastic · 01/02/2019 14:51

Does 'confirmation' relate to your travel company or airline documentation? Did you check in online and did it show then?

Was flying from India to the UK your first flight, or the return? If it was your first flight, log into your flight on the airline website or check with your travel company to make sure you have a meal for your return flight If it was your return flight, did you get your vegetarian meal on your flight to India?

Bezalelle · 01/02/2019 14:57

A lesson I've learned over the years as a veggie and sometime vegan: always take your own food.

MaMaMaMySharona · 01/02/2019 15:04

You are seriously confused as to why someone may be ok with eating cheese but not fish? Really?

Not to hijack the thread, but the reason a lot of vegans don't eat cheese is because (not all - but many) processes for making cheese and other dairy products are not very kind to animals. So I can see why some people would raise it as a point. Exception being this thread is about a vegetarian who, most likely, knows what they can and can't eat and has taken the (most likely correct) assumption that the cheese they were given was vegetarian!

pigsDOfly · 01/02/2019 15:13

Thank you for that explanation otheractivities.

As I said I wasn't being goady. I didn't know that most cheese is now made with vegetable rennet. I haven't bought or eaten cheese for years. When I was eating it it wasn't considered suitable for vegetarians because of the animal rennet.

It makes sense though, as vegetable rennet must be much cheaper, and is obviously a far kinder process than using animal rennet.

Bit precious to be “insulted” isn’t it? Get a grip love. It’s not like they forced it down your throat.

BreconBeBuggered · 01/02/2019 15:30

Fucking hell, yes, complain. Offended is probably a bit strong, though - you must have been offered fish before? Annoying from anyone who ought to know better, but more careless than offensive.

donquixotedelamancha · 01/02/2019 15:32

Is that a typo? No vegan eats cheese. If someone eats cheese, then by definition they are not vegan.

Not everyone who identifies as Vegan avoids eating all meat and dairy. One performs Veganism, rather than it being some kind of objective fact we can define. Your post is (unintentionally I'm sure) trans Vegan exclusionary- it's important not to other those who do Vegan differently.

ElvisParsley · 01/02/2019 15:46

10 whole hours with only a roll and cheese and a scone. It’s a miracle you survived. Shock

Do you get up and eat in the middle of the night? Most people can manage substantially longer than 10 hours without a substantial meal.

They didn’t have the meal you ordered. Not the flight crew’s fault. They offered you alternatives to see if they would suit, let’s face it, people often order a vegetarian meal when they are not vegetarian. The alternatives weren’t suitable, but there was nothing offensive about them offering them.

TheOrigFV45 · 01/02/2019 15:49

I always order Asian Veg and they come round way before take off to check. Maybe next time check before you take your seat.

CallMeVito · 01/02/2019 15:56

just shrugged, not their fault , nothing they can do
well, there is nothing they can do is it. They can't gather a meal out of thin air.

I think YABU not to pack some food when you have food requirements. Meals get missing all the time, it's annoying, but some people have genuine allergies - not preferences - and their booked meal doesn't turn up, so they cannot eat anything at all, cross contamination being a genuine issue.
People will ask for the veggie option because they feel like it, so unless you are served first, you miss out.

So yes, complain by all means, but be aware that you need to pack your own food. It doesn't take that much space in hand luggage.

Elfinablender · 01/02/2019 15:59

You can go weeks without food. But, it doesn't meet the level of expectation for food on a long flight.

Meanwhile, have I told everyone how so lovely and feminine I am that I survive on sunshine, love and a daily cracker. People these days eat too much. If only everyone should be so lucky as to have nothing to eat on a flight.

bread and cheese is hardly nothing though.

ElvisParsley · 01/02/2019 16:09

My sarcasm font clearly got skipped!
I am well aware that people can survive for weeks without food, but the swooning ‘how would you feel if you had to go without food for 10 hours’ from the OP suggests she can’t.

You are right, we do all eat too much.
Maybe I am odd, but on a flight, I would rather have a couple of light snacks than a full airplane meal. It’s not as if you are burning off calories sitting on your arse .

TheFaerieQueene · 01/02/2019 16:10

I was flying BA first class to Tokyo (yes I know, I know) and they didn’t have my vegan food that had been ordered.

Not impressed, but the crew did manage to cook something which was ok ish. Not their fault and I was sweet as pie about it.

I drank plenty of champagne mind you!

lljkk · 01/02/2019 16:15

I like bread & cheese. So I wouldn't complain. I don't have high hopes for airplane food, though. And I usually find it too much food, I'd prefer lighter than lots.

Recently flew 11 yrs with DS, ordered a kid's meal, they didn't have one. I didn't complain. DS is very fussy & we cobbled together enough for him so no actual problems.

Sorry, long thread, did OP actually pay extra for the special meal? It could have been blue cheese or some other awful food she didn't like anyway, even if still vegtn.

FamilyOfAliens · 01/02/2019 16:17

Same happened to me on a business class flight back from NY. The “vegetarian” pasta dish had Parmesan melted into the top. I told the crew it wasn’t vegetarian and sent it back. They gave me a bowl of blueberries instead grin]

I complained while airborne and within a week had a shit load of air miles added to my account. It’s worth doing.
