Just want an opinion if I should complain or not?
I ordered a veggie meal on a plane and they told me they didn't have one for me.
Showed them my confirmation which said Asia Vegetarian on my booking.
They blamed my travel agent and just shrugged, not their fault , nothing they can do.
I was offered fish or chicken instead.
This was a 10 hour flight!!
I ate bread rolls and cheese.
WWYD complain or not.?

Also, unfortunately there wouldn't be much the crew could do if the caterer's hadn't supplied enough vegetarian meals.

I do think you should complain, but I don't think the crew were being unreasonable really

whatacrapusername2306
vegetarians eat cheese. It’s vegans that don’t

No.

Vegetarians eat cheese that does not contain animal rennet.

Jezzifishie · 01/02/2019 13:16

arethereanyleftatall The standard definition of a vegetarian is someone who doesn't eat meat/fish, but does eat dairy/eggs. I get you OP - I happen to be a pescetarian, but still get cross when people mark fish as veggie!

HoustonBess · 01/02/2019 13:16

Meh, some cultures just don't get vegetarianism. That's why I started being non-veggie on holiday. It's too much hassle in lots of places, not worth getting worked up about.

donquixotedelamancha · 01/02/2019 13:16

Was it vegetarian cheese?

I'm imagining that PP thinks most cheeses like to tuck into a nice steak before being eaten themselves.

InsomniacAnonymous · 01/02/2019 13:17

Vegetarians don't eat cheese that has been made with animal rennet.

icannotremember · 01/02/2019 13:18

you were offered food that has a negative impact on animals (cheese) and that was fine, and you were offered food that has a negative impact on animals (fish) and that was insulting and offensive?

You are seriously confused as to why someone may be ok with eating cheese but not fish? Really?

arethereanyleftatall · 01/02/2019 13:18

Thanks @Jezzifishie, I know that, that wasn't the point i was making.

donquixotedelamancha · 01/02/2019 13:18

I also told him it was really insulting that he thought I would eat fish as a vegetarian.

You threshold for taking offence is very low, OP. Have you considered becoming Vegan?

crosstalk · 01/02/2019 13:19

Complain and copy it to your booking company. Keep on going. Clearly it's getting harder and harder for airlines to get increasingly individualised meals to flights - veggie/vegan/pescatarian/chilli no chilli/nut allergies/halal/kosher/gluten intolerant etc. However they should be able to cope. Can any one think of a back up meal they could keep on board that would cater for all of the above?

arethereanyleftatall · 01/02/2019 13:21

Nope, not confused at all.

pigsDOfly · 01/02/2019 13:21

Really? They eat cheese when it contains rennet from the stomachs of slaughtered calfs? Think I'd prefer fish.

Ellisandra · 01/02/2019 13:21

Of course it’s not insulting.
And your title is misleading - you weren’t offered fish as a veggie meal. There was no veggie meal for you so they said what they had for you to choose from - which included fish, chicken, cheese rolls, scones...

Plenty of vegetarians and vegans are fluid.

My stepdaughter has been vegan for 6 months now, but faced unexpectedly with no other options, she’d eat fish or chicken. She wants to reduce her environmental impact, which she still achieves by being vegan for all but one meal in 6 months.

Which doesn’t mean you have to - but it’s an example of why it’s still worth explaining the non vegan option.

Complain about the service by all means, but I’d jump down off the high horse over being offended!

BrightYellowDaffodil · 01/02/2019 13:22

I wouldn’t be offended about a mistake being made and a pre-ordered meal not being available. Annoyed yes, offended no.

However, I WOULD be offended at receiving shit customer service in the form of airline staff who shrugged their shoulders in the face of a problem, and who expected me just to eat whatever they deigned to make available. And who, knowing that what they were offering was unsuitable, made no effort to try and help.

Ellisandra · 01/02/2019 13:22

That is very naughty, donquixote but I did snigger!

Jezzifishie · 01/02/2019 13:23

@arethereanyleftatall Excellent, so you're just being goady in challenging her dietary preferences. Good to know!

BudgieBalls · 01/02/2019 13:27

You threshold for taking offence is very low, OP. Have you considered becoming Vegan?

😂😂

arethereanyleftatall · 01/02/2019 13:27

Indeed, 'dietary preferences' is the point. The op has a preference, the airline offered her A,B,C or D. She is offended and insulted that they offered her A or B. That's silly as many have pointed out. Feel free to complain, you paid for a meal and didn't get one, but I would advise not using the words offended or insulted.

MorningsEleven · 01/02/2019 13:30

I'd complain to whoever fucked up but I wouldn't be offended. I would spang anyone who claims to be vegetarian but merrily eats fish, chicken and the odd Maccy Ds when the mood takes them.

Purpleartichoke · 01/02/2019 13:32

The airline should not have forgotten your meal, but people with dietary needs or preferences should never count on the airline to get it right. Always travel with enough food to feed yourself without any assistance from the airline.

Even the option to request a special meal is a privilege. Those of us with rare allergies just have to wait and see what shows up to find out if we get to eat.

PregnantSea · 01/02/2019 13:34

No need to be offended about the alternatives, that's by the by, but I would definitely complain to your travel agent about them not communicating your veggie meal to the airline. Do it over email so that if they deny it you can forward that onto the airline and blame them. That sort of thing usually outs the real culprit.

Housewife2010 · 01/02/2019 13:35

The problem is that many pescatarians describe themselves as vegetarian. I don't understand why. It's quite easy to just say that you don't eat meat. I have several pescatarian friends who describe themselves as vegetarian. This just confuses other people who then assume that vegetarians eat fish.

Saharafordessert · 01/02/2019 13:35

You probably should have packed enough food for yourself as you have specific dietary requirements in the event of this actually happening or at least some snacks to keep you going.

SneakyGremlins · 01/02/2019 13:38

Parmesan isn’t vegetarian for eg.

@Wildcate

I've never seen a parmesan sandwich though!
