I love, and followed the News Quiz for years and wondered at his absence of late.

Beyond sad. Such intelligence, humour. One of us. I'm weeping as I write this;

Gutted ☹️

ChesterGreySideboard · 01/02/2019 18:21

So sad. There was a rumour on twitter last week that he was ill.

It’s a shame that the record the News Quiz on a Thursday, I’m sure they would want to say something, perhaps there will be something at the beginning.

MitziK · 01/02/2019 18:23

Will the congregation be singing All Things Bright and Beautiful to the tune of Come On Baby Light My Fire with an accompaniment of kazoos?

He clearly wasn't a singer - but - in the last year or so, it was noticeable that he was getting better (or they were giving him tunes actually within his vocal capabilities for a change). It always made me smile when my ears didn't bleed quite as much and the audience responded with approval.

thebear1 · 01/02/2019 18:32

Very sad, I was lucky enough to see his stand up. The news quiz will not be same.

ChesterGreySideboard · 01/02/2019 18:33

I really felt for Miles Jupp at the beginning there. He was only just keeping it together.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 01/02/2019 18:36

The tribute on tonight’s News Quiz made me cry.

Jeremy, I hope you know how much joy you brought, and how much you brought a ray of light into a sometimes bleak and depressing political world.

Catmint · 01/02/2019 18:39

I like to think that he, Linda Smith and Humph are having a catch up on the great antidote to panel games in the sky.

Redcliff · 01/02/2019 18:47

I saw this at work today and felt proper sad. What a lovey thread - its really bringing back some great memories

I saw him live many times - gave him a lift to the train station after one of his shows when I’d just passed my test. He was as lovely and funny and soooo quick off the stage as he was on.

57 is far far far too young.

SingaSong12 · 01/02/2019 18:56

Very sad, he was great.

FuckBrussel · 01/02/2019 18:58

I was really taken aback to hear this earler today. I loved his humour. RIP Jeremy.

OP, he would have LOVED being referred to as "the splendid Jeremy Hardy." It's so him, somehow.

Hassled · 01/02/2019 19:00

I'm so sad about this - he just seemed like such a good bloke. I remember how sweet and sad and nice he was when Linda Smith died - he obviously cared enormously about her. And yes, the quality singing will stay with me.

ChesterGreySideboard · 01/02/2019 19:01

Lovely little tribute at the end.

AornisHades · 01/02/2019 19:04

Yes I was sad to hear the news too. I like the idea of him and Linda Smith catching up :)

anniehm · 01/02/2019 19:06

Very sad, had noticed his absence and assumed he was touring/working on other projects. He was certainly one of my favourite panellists

Debruary · 01/02/2019 19:06

He was a lovely man.

Even back in the 80’s and 90’s he had a warmth to him that many politically edged comedians don’t possess.

Very sad for his family.

Clionba · 01/02/2019 19:11

What a lovely, funny man. As pp said, quite a campaigner, but never cruel.
I'll always remember his jibe at Nigel Lawson when he said "my daughter, Jeremella..." Smile

BasiliskStare · 01/02/2019 19:12

He was a very funny man. Very many years ago I remember him talking about estate agent things and he referring to buying a house " between the prisons" - a silly example but be was funny. Sad . But bess him -it is as others have said too young - I hope his family do well.

Kummerspeck · 01/02/2019 19:13

We have seen him live several times, very very funny and managed to have definite opinions whilst remaining civil and gentle to others.
Was so shocked and sad to hear this news

limitedperiodonly · 01/02/2019 19:16

He was my favourite person on the News Quiz - well, him and Linda Smith.

There were so many things but recently I was trying to find his imitation of Harry Redknapp just after he'd been acquitted of tax evasion. I found the News Quiz episode but I couldn't make it play. It was brilliant. Just one of his rambles about 'I don't know nuffink about numbers, me.' It was so funny.

cleanhousewastedlife · 01/02/2019 19:19

DH and I both very sad to hear this news and to hear Miles Jupp barely get through that heartfelt intro to TNQ tonight. I have a quote by him on the fridge which I had to write down because it nearly made my cry with laughter. He described the Tory Party conference this: " it's like an amateur performance of a Julian Fellowes adaptation of the Book of Revelations." Jeremy, you will be very much missed.

radioactiveimagination · 01/02/2019 19:19

I was sad to hear too. Lovely fellow. My DH knew him as he organised charity gigs and Jeremy did a few for him, he once drove DH home after a gig.

noideaatallreally · 01/02/2019 19:29

So shocked and so sad. I also managed to catch his live act a couple of years ago. I admired both his humour and his politics. His friendship and support for Jeremy Corbyn was very touching, and made me even more a supporter - he said that Corbyn was the last person on earth who ever would have dreamt of or wanted, his position. His support of the NHS and the people who work for it was superb. His own memories of his mum and how much she depended on immigrants for her care will always remain with me. Such a down to earth, funny, genuine man.

MargiaStevens · 01/02/2019 19:49

I will be lining up a playlist of his greatest musical exploits on Clue tonight - having seen him at a Clue recording he was such a good sport despite knowing his singing wasn’t so great, but he played along with the white flags being waved by the teams. RIP Jeremy.
