Slightly peeved at new neighbour.

My previous neighbour was an elderly gentleman and he had to sell his house to go into a home.

I would put his bin out for him as our path is steep and he struggled to get the bin up it.

When he moved out and the house was on the market I used his bin and put it out with mine.

When the house was bought by a young couple it needed a lot of work doing, this work has been ongoing now for several months and throughout I have continued to put the bin out, they haven't been living on the house so various tradesmen and decorators have been using the bin and I have put it out for them in their absence.

Well they have finally moved in (I think though they may just be staying over some times?)

Last night I forgot to put the bin out so dashed out this morning in my dressing gown and wellies. Well next door have put their own bin out and just left mine. AIBU to be slightly peeved that they didn't bother putting mine out despite knowing I have done theirs for months.

Yes I know it's a minor irritation in the grand scheme of things.

How do they know you've been putting their bin out if they're not living there?

Dextrodependant · 01/02/2019 10:37

Because when they visit the house regularly they see the previously full bin is now empty. They have thanked me for putting it out before too. If they haven't been there on the Thursday night they know it was me who put it out when they turn up on a Friday/Saturday to a nice empty bin.

You expect them to be psychic and reciprocate an arrangement that existed before they moved in, that they have no idea of?

Darkbaptism · 01/02/2019 10:37

Maybe they didn’t realise you had been putting their bin out. Also perhaps they didn’t check your bin was out. I wouldn’t stress about it, don’t take their bin out anymore.

themoomoo · 01/02/2019 10:38

well they thanked you for doing it when they weren't around and now that they are living there they will assume everyone reverts to putting their own bin out

Dextrodependant · 01/02/2019 10:38

O am not stressing just very slightly miffed. They do know that I have been putting their bin out because they have thanked me on passing.

You put the bin out to help the old gentleman, but it also helped you, because you used it.

How are they to know you’ve been helping the previous owner and helping yourself too.

TheLostTargaryen · 01/02/2019 10:39

They may have wondered if there was a good reason you hadn't put yours out yet perhaps? Maybe thinking you were still using it and intended on popping another bag in before the bin lorry arrived?
I'd ignore it this time but if it happens more often, simply stop putting theirs out. Job done.

rainflowerstar · 01/02/2019 10:39

Don't put theirs out again.

Hillarious · 01/02/2019 10:40

We do bins for neighbours when they're on holiday, and they do the same for us, but we don't when everyone's at home.

Jebuschristchocolatebar · 01/02/2019 10:40

Maybe they didn’t think it needed to go out. We pay per bin lift where I live so u would never put my neighbours bin out without asking first.

placebobebo · 01/02/2019 10:40

Ahh sorry cross post. Perhaps they didn't realise how often you did it. Perhaps this is their way of letting you know they would prefer to deal with their own bin and don't want to say anything in case it offends.
Perhaps they just thought ahh bin, must sort that and nothing more.

billybagpuss · 01/02/2019 10:41

They weren't using the bin, you and their contractors were. I doubt they were even aware you were doing it. I'd give them the benefit of the doubt on this one.

WeeDangerousSpike · 01/02/2019 10:41

Why the hell were you putting the bin out for the builders?! DP is a builder, he would have thought you were bonkers Confused

And how would the neighbours know you've been doing it if they weren't living there yet? Confused

Very nice of you to help your elderly neighbour, don't get me wrong, but as an able bodied person I'd be quite irritated if you constantly took my bin - what if I wasn't ready for it to go out yet? I'd find it quite intrusive and judgy that you thought I should have done it earlier if I'm honest.

Hillarious · 01/02/2019 10:41

Are you generating more rubbish than you should? You say you've been using two bins for a while.

Dextrodependant · 01/02/2019 10:42

That's a good point maybe they thought I hadn't finished with it.

Just to point out, I don't use their bin now that they have bought the house. I only used it previously with the old neighbours permission as he didn't fill it.

I have never heard of having to pay per bin lift, ours is covered by our council tax.

x post, just seen they did know, but its one thing putting the bin out for an absent neighbour than for one that is living there. I wouldn't feel comfortable doing it if the owner were in the house as a pp mentioned you might not be ready yet.

Dextrodependant · 01/02/2019 10:45

@Weedangerousspike because the builders didn't put it out so they would have been left with a full bin for the next 2 weeks and with on going work it could have made life difficult, well inconvenient maybe, not difficult.

I am not even sure if they have moved in yet, if they have then this is the first bin collection so I won't judge them Hmm and put their bin out for them going forward, I did it when they werent there so they wouldnt miss the collection.

but if they weren't living there and it was just full of builders' stuff it would only make life difficult for the builders? If you hadn't put it out it would have encouraged the lazy feckers to do it themselves

Dextrodependant · 01/02/2019 10:50

Well I never considered that about the builders.

Maybe I was being unreasonable for putting their bin out in the first place!

OP posts:
themoomoo · 01/02/2019 10:50

why are you going to continue to put their bin out Confused

Dextrodependant · 01/02/2019 10:53

I am not, not unless they ask, if they are going away or something.

That's what you have just quoted me saying - I won't judge them and put their bin out.

OP posts:
themoomoo · 01/02/2019 10:55

ah right, that makes more sense!
Yeah, i really wouldn't give it another thought

Combineharvester · 01/02/2019 10:56

Some people just don’t think,

Dextrodependant · 01/02/2019 10:57

I am not really that bothered. Just had a slight sulk this morning when I saw they had done their own and not mine 😂 not the end of the world really.
