Warwick Police haven't prosecuted anyone for these vile rape threats and Warwick uni are now letting (some of?) the perpetrators back in to study at the same university alongside those they discussed threatening to rape.

Would you be happy sending your child here?

Warwick students suspended over rape threats allowed to return earlyly*_

Lycanthropology · 31/01/2019 09:41

Have they not committed a crime? There’s certainly hate speech in there.

One of them wrote “I hate c..ns”

Imagine a black student having to be in a class with this man. MrsAriadne seems to think this is OK.

OpalIridescence · 31/01/2019 09:41

Well I think we all know who life is tough on.

One of the women said that these men were her friends, she could not believe she was being spoken about like that by them.

These women are expected to share a study space with the men again?

Students are expelled for a lot less than this, Warwick are sending a strong message with this decision. I think all the hound women and all their bankrolling parents should heed it.

Nanny0gg · 31/01/2019 09:42

Again, I am not condoning anything but they have been stupid young men who haven't committed a crime.

Hate speech? Underage sex?

ghostyslovesheets · 31/01/2019 09:42

yeah they should stop being snowflakes and happily bob along at lectures/trips/nights out with the men who said they where too ugly to be survivors of abuse and who said they wanted to rape them - Hmm yet again we tell women to toughen up and play nicely rather than telling MEN to stop being asshats

and my friend was arrested in front of her kids for 'dead naming' some idiot on Twitter

worlds gone mad

OpalIridescence · 31/01/2019 09:42

I am also stunned that the racism in those texts has been ignored. How are they still students there?

Northernlass69 · 31/01/2019 09:43

Surely they won't actually dare step foot on campus again even if they are allowed?? I know that is not the point, but they'd be crazy to. Hopefully something more will happen now this has a higher profile.

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 31/01/2019 09:43

Aa always women being unsafe does not have the safe value as men being inconvenienced.

bigglewig · 31/01/2019 09:43

I went to this uni and am feel embarrassed to be affiliated with it...shocking news.

Doyoumind · 31/01/2019 09:43

I'm not minimising. And I don't have a son at or anywhere near going to university. I'm trying to look at the situation objectively. They have been punished. Their punishment will continue.

Bluestitch · 31/01/2019 09:44

Yes even if threats against women aren't taken seriously I would have thought racism was against a university's code of conduct.

SillySallySingsSongs · 31/01/2019 09:44

forgot racism and anti Semitic which also featured in those chats.

Why aren't they being prosecuted for this then? Both are crimes.

Fazackerley · 31/01/2019 09:45

It isn't a crime to be an arsehole in private.

OpalIridescence · 31/01/2019 09:45

I went back to uni as a 30 something adult. I genuinely expected the young men to be more aware of sexism and just be better.

I was really, really shocked at what I found. Rape seems to be totally acceptable as a 'joke'. Alot of the men spoke about how hard they have it now and feminism was a filthy word.

Reminds me of that Germaine Greer quote about how much men hate women.

By the way there is a petition about this if anyone wants to sign.

Bluestitch · 31/01/2019 09:46

It isn't only about punishment, it should also be about the welfare of the women. The priority should be ensuring they are safe and comfortable and if the best way to achieve that is permanent expulsion of these men then it should happen.

Grimbles · 31/01/2019 09:47

@fazackerley

Its just words, what's the problem?

User758172 · 31/01/2019 09:47

WTF? Threats of rape, sexism, misogyny and racism are things we just have to tolerate because life is tough?

No, we shouldn’t have to tolerate them, they shouldn’t happen, but they do. There are some lousy human beings out there. The answer is strength, not weakness. Women should not be cowed in the face of it.

You wouldn’t believe the racism I experienced every single day at school (not in the UK). Racism and xenophobia and rape threats to my face, constantly. And I mean constantly. Every single day. Every day.

But I had a choice. I could give those people power over me, allow them to dictate my feelings, allow these horrible people to affect my view of myself. But I didn’t. I refused to. Their words were just words. I had to be tough, I had to be strong to get through it. We need to encourage people to have more mental fortitude, not less. We can’t make every space safe, we will meet crappy, nasty human beings in life, and we can’t always run away from them. We have to be strong.

Bluestitch · 31/01/2019 09:48

They were careless enough with their 'private' chat that the women named found out about it. That's on them for not keeping their conversation more secure and spreading it among others.

User758172 · 31/01/2019 09:52

@Lycanthropology

Oh I’ve been called that too. You think I think it’s ok? It’s quite obviously not, no.

I can’t dictate what comes out if anyone else’s mouth. If they want to use that word, I can’t stop them. I have the choice whether to get angry and upset about it, or to realise they’re a nasty person, pay no attention to them and go on with my day. I choose the latter.

Lycanthropology · 31/01/2019 09:53

But MrsAriadne we can also make rules and codes of conduct to deter and punish this behaviour. To give the message that such behaviour is unacceptable and abhorrent. To stand by and support the victims of such abuse.
Institutions can support, legislate and take action in the face of threats, violence, racism, misogyny... it’s not down to individuals to bear and tolerate it.

I’m sorry to read of your horrific experiences.

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 31/01/2019 09:54

“But he added that the university's focus had been "to ensure that anyone involved in this matter who remains a student at Warwick is able to complete their studies while minimising any further contact between the original complainants and anyone who received a sanction from the discipline committee.””

So Warwick university is equally concerned that the perpetrators finish their studies as well as victims. So that’s nice.

KittensAndCake · 31/01/2019 09:55

Gutted. My DD had this uni at the top of her list for next year. I think she may have a few words to say when she hears about this 🤬

Anyone here have children that are hoping to go this year? Does this change things for them/you? It's absolutely disgusting.

MrsBrianWarner · 31/01/2019 09:57

this is in the mainstream press and will not be doing either warwick or the wankers any favours.

Everyone knows who they are. They will be looking over their shoulders the whole time if they return. I personally would have wanted to go elsewhere. They will be targets and i imagine it will be highly stressful for them to go to pubs and clubs etc.

Italiangreyhound · 31/01/2019 09:57

Threatening to rape someone is hate speech, why was this not treated as such.

I would not be sending an female child of mine to Warwick.

Is there a petition?

CousinKrispy · 31/01/2019 09:58

I wouldn't doubt that the university is terrified that if they didn't cave one of these students would bring legal action against them. A university is a very different setting from most workplaces as someone will always scream about how fees or taxes are being used inappropriately if the uni does X, Y, Z. I'm not saying this excuses that leniency, but I would guess that's what's behind it.

What's terrifying is that this probably isn't confined to Warwick--these guys got caught, but imagine how many other young men are behaving this way around the country and it just hasn't been exposed.

Alltheprettyseahorses · 31/01/2019 09:58

You can’t always be safe and protected and cocooned

Unless you're men who threaten to rape and torture women eh, MrsAriadneOliver. Let's protect them from the consequences of their foul behaviour. Poor little menz, they might get upset by being told it's not nice to plan to use hair straighteners on women's genitals. The women affected? Well they should clearly just suck it up. Probably their own fault anyway etcetcetc.
