Not allowed to cut up pizza in Wetherspoons?

Calvinsmam · 30/01/2019 10:56

We were in Wetherspoons at the weekend having a cheap and cheerful lunch and my DN had a pizza.
We asked them if they could cut up her pizza for her because the last time it wasn’t and the waitress told us they weren’t allowed to anymore and don’t even have pizza cutters in the kitchen. We laughed as we assumed it was a joke but no when the pizza arrived it wasn’t cut up and the waitress said again that for health and safety reasons they weren’t allowed to use a pizza cutter, we asked if they could have used a knife and she said no. We were a bit Hmm
Then she came over with a very sharp steak knife and said we could cut it up ourselves with that if we wanted.

Is this a nationwide rule or is our local Wetherspoons a bit odd?

Also isn’t the owner of Wetherspoons desperate to get us out of the EU because of silly little rules like this?

Eliza9917 That is utter garabage about EU Directives on the shape of bananas and cucumbers. Utter utter, Boris Johnson-level made-up nonsense.

Calvinsmam · 30/01/2019 15:00

I’m going to really put the cat amongst the pigeons now and say, though I never would have chosen to eat at Wetherspoons their pizzas were actually really nice, not what I imagined at all.

I think Spoons just don't want to admit that their 'kitchen' has no tools in it other than a microwave.

Calvinsmam · 30/01/2019 15:01

*A few years ago someone in Wetherspoons found the tip of a finger on their pizza. Turns out a few days prior someone in the kitchen had had an accident with a pizza cutter. In the ensuing first aid panic they lost the finger.

That is why they banned the kitchen staff from slicing pizzas*

Ewwww is this true?

That would explain it then!

Just order several slices of pizza, problem solved.

Wetherspoons doesn’t sell pizza by the slice as they don’t have pizza slicers to slice them.

Don't forget the deep fat fryer! Their menu includes sizzle alongside the ping.

Wetherspoons basically don't care about things like this at all. They swapped the chips for a while to ones that had a crispy coating (so not gluten free) as the majority feedback was that they were easier to get a nicer looking chip. If they don't have multiple big chopping boards in the back (or space for them) then they probably have just decided to skip cutting the pizza behind the scenes and shift the effort to the customer.

They missed a trick in not promoting a week of finger food.

PosiePerkinandPootle · 30/01/2019 15:16

Our favourite pizza restaurant cuts up children's pizzas but brings adult ones out with a little pizza wheel. But I'm sure if we asked for ours to be sliced before it came out I'm sure they would because it would take them seconds to oblige a perfectly reasonable request from their customers.
I use scissors to cut pizzas into slices at home for quickness

GlitterNails · 30/01/2019 15:27

Boulty - because the OP said her mother likes to go with her young grand-niece, and both struggle to cut it. Plus she explained why her mum didn’t want to ask others at the table.

Not everyone wants or feels able to ask the people they are with. I’m disabled and sometimes when I’ve gone out for a meal with people I’ve called the restaurant ahead to make requests that will make life easier for me once I arrive. That way it’s all sorted and I don’t have to start talking about health issues in front of people I don’t wish to and the people I’m with won’t be any the wiser.

I’m no sure why asking for basic accommodations is such an issue to others. It’s not someone that just can’t be bothered to cut it up.

whendidimakethisbottle · 30/01/2019 15:31

DP is a wetherspoons manager. They cut up the pizzas in his work. Bad fucking times when spoons staff in Scotland are allowed pizza cutters but English employees aren't.

Can't fucking believe how out of hand this whole threads gotten. It's full of complete shite... 🙄

Calvinsmam · 30/01/2019 15:32

Of course I’d cut up my grandmas pizza, I’m not a monster.

But my grandma and niece usually just go alone and always ask for it to be cut up and it’s never been an issue as it literally takes 5 seconds to slice a pizza with a pizza slicer. So she just asked the waitress.

To those who've never seen whole pizza served, go to Ask or Pizza Express.

Nousernameforme · 30/01/2019 15:40

When pizzas first started a pizza wheel came out with every pizza but so many got pinched that they don't do it now.

You should be able to ask the kitchen to cut it for you maybe they didn't have any pizza wheels left to do so

FlipF · 30/01/2019 15:49

CalvinsMum.

Are you sure it bothers your grandmother that much. If she keeps going to weatherspoons s and keeps ordering the pizza and keeps having problems then it can't be that bad otherwise she would surely just order something else or go somewhere else or take a wee pair or scissors or something. 🤷🏻‍♀️

FlipF · 30/01/2019 15:51

Kitchen scissors

FlipF · 30/01/2019 15:52

Sorry didn't mean to post that!

Calvinsmam · 30/01/2019 15:52

They don’t usually go to Wetherspoons they usually go to one of the Italians but they wanted to mix it up.

And she said she knows for next time to bring a pair of scissors if they go to wetherspoons.

This thread was literally meant to be a light hearted thread about stupid rules but it turned into a cesspit.

Maybe AIBU wasn't the best place for it, in hindsight ?

@Eliza9917 The bendy banana regulation is bollocks.

anniehm · 30/01/2019 15:59

Must be a Wetherspoons thing because they definitely cut them at Pizza Hut!

vintagemoo · 30/01/2019 16:04

Calvinsmam

I feel for you. I knew exactly what you meant from the off. Likewise quite shocked at how the thread went Confused

As an aside, I think it's very lovely that your mum and daughter are close and spend time together. Sounds so sweet.

Calvinsmam · 30/01/2019 16:08

vintago
It’s my grandma and my dn so her great grandma and they are really sweet, my dn hangs out with her all the time by choice. It’s lovely.

The person who couldn’t get her samples cut at customer services, it probably had nothing to do with health and safety.

If someone works in a store, they generally can’t leave their post and walk 2 department away. So they direct customers to the staff in the appropriate department.

Anonandannoyed · 30/01/2019 16:14

And yes, OP, this thread has been far more drama filled that anyone would expect, given the topic.
