Don’t read if easily offended- bum worms

Name changed for this for obvious reasons as some friends of mine know my usual name.
Also posting here for traffic...

AIBU to believe there is a possibility this is worms.
I’ve had weird issues for a while involving itching, discharge and irritation, down there, with no cause found by gp.

However, I have intense itching at night all round that area. It will literally wake me up.

I have 3 young children (primary age) who have never had worms to my knowledge, but after reading stats on worms (I was shocked!????) I’m guessing they must have. I have checked after going the toilet (I’m not a troll, honest!) but can not see anything moving in there. There are some little white bits but they definitely do not move.

My question is, if any of you have worms or seen them in stool, do they move?? AIBU to think this is possibly worms?

I don’t want to treat unnecessarily as I’ve recently been on a few medications and one comes up as contradicted with the worming tablet.

I promise I’m not not a poo or vagina troll and apologise for the subject matter on a Monday morning Blush

It sounds like worms. My GP recommends doing a treatment once per year for the whole family if you have small children. I don't think they move in stools.

Bluewidow · 28/01/2019 07:43

The white bits are the worms. Plus if your only itching at night that’s a definite sign.

lynnepot · 28/01/2019 07:44

Yeah the threadworms should be fairly easy to spot visually.

Claw001 · 28/01/2019 07:45

Google the symptoms!

Fancyacuppaluv · 28/01/2019 07:46

YANBU and definitely sounds like thread worms. Easy enough to treat. You can get over the counter medicine from any pharmacy (I think it’s called Ovex), but, you must treat the whole family at the same time, and wash your bedding and towels, eggs can be transferred that eat. Keep your little ones nails really short.
Don’t be embarrassed, it’s really very common. Good luck!

Polly99 · 28/01/2019 07:47

It can be very hard to spot them in poo. Itching at night does sound like worms as does the irritation. Speak to your GP about what to do re the medications, but I’d deworm the whole family ASAP.

Fancyacuppaluv · 28/01/2019 07:47

Way.... not eat... damn autocorrect!

Marv1nGay3 · 28/01/2019 07:49

There are several foods that can kill them off. Garlic , raw carrot, crushed papaya seeds with honey, pumpkin seeds. Also apple cider vinegar.

Fazackerley · 28/01/2019 07:50

Piles?

HavelockVetinari · 28/01/2019 07:51

Take the medecine, it's one dose and you're done. Make sure you treat the whole family.

wormymary · 28/01/2019 07:55

Thanks, everyone!

I recently took metronizadole, which is definitely contradicted with ovex, but nobody seems to know how long after I can take it Hmm

I presumed the worms would actually look like wiggling worms and they definitely don’t.

Can always count on you ladies of mumsnet- thanks again!

Order a family pack of pills (online if you are embarrassed) and the whole family takes them, ideally take two doses each 2 weeks apart. Really common, happened a few times here, nothing to be ashamed of

ItsMEhooray · 28/01/2019 07:57

Argh! This thread has made me want to deworm the whole family Blush

wildbhoysmama · 28/01/2019 07:57

I bloody hate them! Two of my DC are prone to them ( one a nail biter, the other not, so God knows why- maybe he just sits beside an untreated child) and it drives me mad with boil.washing bedding and underwear/ jammies for weeks! Thing is, do your DC not have the itching? Mine are v quick to tell me and I find them quickly when I look. Best method is get them to kneel with bum in the air somewhere with good light and gently push the skin out so you can see inside- chances are one little bugger will wriggle to the surface and you can remove it ( not nice but necessary) .

Some people get pain instead of itching ( rare) or just don't feel them ( even rarer) but possible.

I find washing all underwear/ pyjamas/ bedding/ towels at 60 degrees all the time has helped.

You need to treat everyone now and wash everything today at 60. Good luck.

ItsMEhooray · 28/01/2019 07:58

(Just in case! We haven't been running round with worms for a lark)

wormymary · 28/01/2019 07:58

Can it actually cause vaginal symptoms though? That’s what I’m finding hard to believe and why I guess my gp didn’t even suggest it

shecamefromgreece · 28/01/2019 07:59

Get some ovex it's one spoonful each for the whole family and it's done. If it's not worms it's not going to do you any harm. For what irs worth though it sounds like it is.
If your desperate to know put the kids to bed with no bottoms on, wait til theyve been asleep a couple of hours and go in and shine a light on their bottom you will see them crawling around.
I personally never felt the need and treated them when they itches or if their siblings were itching but friends have done it

Fazackerley · 28/01/2019 08:01

Yes they can travel into your vag at night.

FrequentFlyerRandomDent · 28/01/2019 08:02

I read they can. The whole family has to do the treatment though not just you or it will come back. It is symptomless in most people. The advice is usually to take one dose and another two weeks later, but your pharmacist will know anyway. Common problem that noone ever apparently suffers from yet all school nurses and pharmacists know about.

You don't need to wash at 60. Most clothes could not take it in the long run. Sheets and towels yes.

The moving/bashing rinsing at 40 is sufficient to destroy the eggs.

Good luck.

wormymary · 28/01/2019 08:05

Urgh, travelling worms make me shudder!

I did actually have a little peek with my phone torch at night at the children quickly and didn’t see anything. Thank god they didn’t wake- can you imagine, they would have needed counselling Wink I’ve also had a look in the night at myself and didn’t see anything.

I will ask another pharmacist if they know about the other medication. No bad side effects from ovex? Feels a bit mean giving it to the kids if they don’t have worms. I’m a bit of a medicine phobe though!

Thanks again Smile

How recently? Today?

wormymary · 28/01/2019 08:10

It was the week after Christmas. All I can find online is something to say some deadly syndrome can happen and women in the Philippines had taken both ovex and metronizadole in the 6 weeks prior.

OP posts:
insideoutsider · 28/01/2019 08:20

No need to keep looking or searching for them at night. Just go to the pharmacy and get some Ovex and treat the whole family. It won't harm the kids. It's not like you're using it everyday. My GP said it's worth doing once a year after the summer holidays if you have young kids.

Yes, they travel up and cause vaginal symptoms. That's what my DD complained about and I found.

greenelephantscarf · 28/01/2019 08:36

about the contraindication - ask the pharmacist. that's what they are there for.

wash all towels and bedding and pants on hot. wear pants at night. don't shake bedding. change towels every day until treatment is finished. don't share towels. short fingernails.

tbh I prefer worms to headlice - much easier to treat ime.

bridgetreilly · 28/01/2019 08:36

Ask the pharmacist about the possible complication with the other medicine. They are the experts on that, not doctors. But so long as they give the go ahead, dose the whole family up on Ovex. You can get pills rather than medicine if that's easier.
