Don’t read if easily offended- bum worms

wormymary · 28/01/2019 07:38

Name changed for this for obvious reasons as some friends of mine know my usual name.
Also posting here for traffic...

AIBU to believe there is a possibility this is worms.
I’ve had weird issues for a while involving itching, discharge and irritation, down there, with no cause found by gp.

However, I have intense itching at night all round that area. It will literally wake me up.

I have 3 young children (primary age) who have never had worms to my knowledge, but after reading stats on worms (I was shocked!????) I’m guessing they must have. I have checked after going the toilet (I’m not a troll, honest!) but can not see anything moving in there. There are some little white bits but they definitely do not move.

My question is, if any of you have worms or seen them in stool, do they move?? AIBU to think this is possibly worms?

I don’t want to treat unnecessarily as I’ve recently been on a few medications and one comes up as contradicted with the worming tablet.

I promise I’m not not a poo or vagina troll and apologise for the subject matter on a Monday morning Blush

and throw out any playdough

MyFriendGoo5 · 28/01/2019 09:05

It could also be anal thrush. I'd treat both.

(( my ds ended up with anal thrush from Lush bathbombs.........That was a fun day pinning him down with one and and waving a tube of canesten with the other Hmm ))

wildbhoysmama · 28/01/2019 09:19

To clarify, not all clothes need 60 degrees, just bedding, towels and pants and I do this ALL the time now and I feel it has Made a difference to the amount of times the DC get it.

Lweji · 28/01/2019 09:20

IIRC, you could take a different drug against worms that may not interact with the other medication. But ask the pharmacist.
Remember to take again two weeks later and even maybe a 3rd time. Everyone in the family.

Clean all surfaces including door handles and light switches.
Ensure everyone is using underwear and it's not easy to scratch the bottom with bare hands.

The itching is from the eggs deposited by the females outside the anus, and, yes, they can move to the vagina.

The white specs could be dead males or even females. But that would indicate a heavy infection.

Tefiti2 · 28/01/2019 09:23

OP is it definitely not thrush? Especially since you’ve recently had antibiotics.

troubleswillbeoutofsight · 28/01/2019 09:31

One of my children had them once. he still used a potty and the threadworms were definitely moving. I have a friend who had them and didn't realise. They did move into her vagina so it is possible ( she said it was the most vile thing she's ever suffered)

wormymary · 28/01/2019 09:31

Definitely not thrush, I’ve been swabbed for everything numerous times.

I’m due more dental treatment and potentially more metronizadole. I will get that out the way and then treat the whole family with ovex.

Thanks again Smile

@troubleswillbeoutofsight

Was it enough for your friend to treat with ovex? I’ve made the mistake of googling and it said it only kills worms in the bowel Shock

OP posts:
babsnet · 28/01/2019 09:46

From the manufacturer's data sheet for Ovex:
A case-control study of a single outbreak of Stevens-Johnson syndrome /toxic epidermal necrolysis (SJS/TEN) suggested a possible association with the concomitant use of metronidazole with mebendazole. Although there are no additional data on this potential interaction, concomitant use of mebendazole and metronidazole should be avoided.

So should not be used at the same time, but will be ok for you to take now

ForgivenessIsDivine · 28/01/2019 09:48

Or treatment with diatomaceous earth

wormymary · 28/01/2019 10:09

@babsnet you are a superstar, thank you! Pharmacist said they didn’t know

Thanks, all!

OP, I really don't know. It's a coincidence this thread has come up now as she only told me the story recently. It was following the birth of her first child many years ago and she had torn badly as the baby was huge. I don't know any other details except she was terribly traumatised

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 28/01/2019 10:27

Check their bums just before bed and first thing in the morning Grin

GummyGoddess · 28/01/2019 10:34

So is this common? I just don't recall this ever happening as a child with me or any friends (mid 80's born).

What age would you say it starts at so I can be prepared if it's this common?

BlooperReel · 28/01/2019 11:03

Action list for de-worming:

Ovex - I find the pills work best.
Thorough wash of the anus/genital area morning and night.
Wash all towels at 60, do not share towels.
Damp dust all surfaces, rinse the cloth often with hot water.
Wash all bedding at at least 40 and bottom sheets at 60.
Keep finger nails short, clean in the shower with a nail brush and soap.
Hoover thoroughly and empty the hoover container/bag often.
Discourage nail biting/nose picking etc.
Re-dose on ovex after 2 weeks.

To discourage any worms lingering in the bowel there are foods you can eat to assist with the eviction: garlic, probiotic yogurt, pumpkin seeds, grapefruit seed extract (a few drops in a glass of water).

They thrive on refined sugar, so cutting down on high sugar processed foods will help too.

Lweji · 28/01/2019 18:29

it said it only kills worms in the bowel

It's true. The single dose is only for gut worms.
You'd have to ask a doctor for vaginal treatment, but it would require multiple doses or topical application, probably.

Lweji · 28/01/2019 18:33

Definitely don't do any home remedies instead of proper treatment. Most are just myths.
Treatment and good hygiene are your best options.

sweetkitty · 28/01/2019 18:36

DD3 was complaining about an itchy bum at night, got the tablets for the whole family from minor ailments at the chemists. Very easy to deal with.

m0therofdragons · 28/01/2019 18:42

How come I can just put a spot on the cat to stop worms and fleas but I can't do the same for dc? I never had worms as a child but dd2&3 have them about once a year. Pharmacist said the last 4 years here she's sold more worming treatment than ever.

greenelephantscarf · 28/01/2019 18:44

How come I can just put a spot on the cat to stop worms and fleas but I can't do the same for dc?

because it's quite nasty stuff that you really don't want to take yourself or give your dc. remember the fipronil egg scandal last year? that's basically it.

crispysausagerolls · 28/01/2019 18:46

Omfg i did not know this was a thing and now I am going to have nightmares!!! Poor you OP!!!

Lweji · 28/01/2019 18:51

How come I can just put a spot on the cat to stop worms and fleas but I can't do the same for dc?

Because it only works on the fleas and the worms that fleas transmit.
For everything else you need pills.

SpiritedLondon · 28/01/2019 18:56

I can remember getting them as a kid but I was a thumb sucker til quite late so probably linked to that. They obviously look like tiny pieces of white cotton thread.... hence the name. I know it’s gross to think about it but they can wriggle around to the vagina ( although I don’t remember discharge ). They don’t like the light so you have to surprise them a bit if you’re trying to find them. Now there’s an image Grin

allyourcats · 28/01/2019 19:02

Haven't read the whole thread (no pun intended) but definitely sounds wormy.

My eldest DC had them, we treated the whole family (didn't go too nuts with the washing because I'm a slattern) and they went away. I didn't the treatment had any adverse effect on any of us.

I have a friend who treats herself and her DCs every 6 months regardless.

Beebumble2 · 28/01/2019 19:06

They went round like wildfire when I taught in an infants school. We were treated, but had to wash all the Duplo and other plastic toys in steriliser.
I’d wash down your plastic toys and stick the bricks in a dishwasher, if you can.
