To move house

We live in a lovely quiet street, close to my kids school and we have fantastic neighbours. However our house is quite small and now we can afford to buy a much bigger house close by. I am so undecided what we should do. Is it worth moving to get an extra bedroom (for visitors), a bigger kitchen and a downstairs playroom. We manage fine where we are and are very happy here so is it worth the effort of moving, renovating etc with kids? They would still go to the same school if we move but the Road would be busier and I am not sure what the neighbours would be like. We do not have space to extend our house. I am not someone who likes lots of change.

Loft conversion?

Can you extend your current property?

Ignore me - speed reading is not working for me right now 😬

Move up property ladder.

If you're very happy where you are now I don't think you should move just because you have the money to do so.

Use the spare cash to focus on on paying off your mortgage more quickly or paying into your pension.

Maybe spend some more cash on trips or outings for the kids or putting up visiting family in an Airbnb if you feel bad about not having a playroom or a spare bedroom.

You an always reconsider in the future if your family's needs change.

I wouldn't. Bigger house = more clutter and more cleaning.

You say you are very happy where you are, so why put yourselves through the sheer grief of moving, not to mention the cost? I agree with PP, if you have the cash to move I would put it toward paying off your mortgage and enjoy life even more!

I hate crowded space, but I wouldn't be able to advise you.

Do you like your current kitchen? Is it big enough? Can you improve it?

How much do you really need a playroom - do your kids have a proper bedroom or a box room?

Extra bedrooms are great, if anything they keep your house tidy because you can use them for many things when you don't have visitors. But how often do you have those? I spent years sleeping in my living room everytime we had guests, and it was never a big deal then.

The point is that if you feel crowded and hate your current house, it's worth researching buying a bigger one. If you are very happy there, why would you bother?
