To ask who you tip and who you don't?

Just waiting for an takeaway as the kids are sick and I started thinking about tipping in the uk.

Who do you tip and who do you not? I tend to tip in restaurants with table service, my hairdresser and brow lady, we also hung tradesman a tenner as well for a pint when they've done good work.

I don't tend to tip delivery drivers for takeaways (we order on just eat and they charge for delivery)

How about you?

I don't tip anyone. I disagree with the entire premise of it.

Lovingbenidorm · 26/01/2019 16:54

I pretty much tip everyone!
Restaurants, hairdresser, nails, plumbers etc

Sharkirasharkira · 26/01/2019 16:54

I tip in restaurants if I feel they've given good service, mainly because I know what hard work it is and how welcome those extra pounds are when you're 18 and earn minimum wage to be shouted at by drunken yobs.

I usually round up the fare for taxi drivers as most of them around here are self employed but other than that I don't tip. Can't afford to!

321cheese · 26/01/2019 16:56

Only tip in restaurants if the service is good. Will have it removed if its been added and the service is poor.

Brow lady always gets tipped

Taxis I round up to the pound only if they are good.

Thats it.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 26/01/2019 16:57

Restaurants
Cabbie
Hairdresser

At Christmas, the dustmen, postman, milkman.

HoliestGoat · 26/01/2019 17:00

I tip hairdresser (selfishly - im sure it helps if I'm trying to get a last minute appointment etc ) but only tip restaurants if service has been particularly good - probably half the time?

Amanduh · 26/01/2019 17:02

No one unless its a particularly special/hard job, if we have a meal out with lots of people perhaps.

DayManChampionOfTheSun · 26/01/2019 17:05

I only really tip my eyebrow lady, but that is because they do a great job, only charge £4, and give me a free one every 8 trips. I pay them £5 each time (including the free session so I guess they get a bonus tip that day)

I don't tip hairdressers etc, I don't go anywhere that has a seperate person washing hair and I pay enough for the app as it is.

Restaurants I will top if on a holiday (Xmas, new year etc) but otherwise don't unless it was really exceptional service

FlagFish · 26/01/2019 17:05

Restaurants
Taxis
Hairdresser

We don't get takeaways (live out in the sticks so no one will deliver here!) but I don't think I would tip.

LostInShoebiz · 26/01/2019 17:22

Restaurants I will top if on a holiday (Xmas, new year etc)

What’s the rationale behind that?

MyNewBearTotoro · 26/01/2019 17:26

I don’t tip very often as generally I disagree with the premise of it. Occasionally I’ll tip at small independent restaurants if both the food and service were particularly good but not often. I recently tipped a particularly friendly Uber driver as well but that was out of character for me!

halfwitpicker · 26/01/2019 17:27

I tip hairdressers
Always tip in restaurants, but live av4
Taxi drivers

halfwitpicker · 26/01/2019 17:28

Av4 = abroad

MyBreadIsEggy · 26/01/2019 17:30

I tip in restaurants if the service is good, and tip bar staff in pubs at Christmas - I’ve done both of those jobs. It’s shitty money, for not very nice work. The amount of drunken abuse that bar staff receive, especially during busy festive periods is ridiculous, and they don’t get paid enough to put up with that shit. So chucking an extra quid in a tip jar really isn’t any skin off my nose.

ohtheholidays · 26/01/2019 17:32

I tip when we eat out if the service has been good.

I tip the hairdresser and the person who washes my hair in the salon.
I tip taxi drivers and I tip the people who do my nails and my eyebrows.

Take aways we always collect so no need for tipping there,we used to tip the paper boy(we'd give him a Christmas bonus)when we had one and we used to have a lovely postman and we'd give him a gift and money at Christmas.

We give the binmen a nice gift at Christmas.

Buntybearbess · 26/01/2019 17:33

I tip in table service restaurants, hairdressers, takeaway delivery drivers, deliveroo and the like, sometimes a barman or someone who has provided good service.

DayManChampionOfTheSun · 26/01/2019 17:35

LostInShoebiz no idea tbh, just in my experience, the service is always better on these days. Went to meet some of my mums nursing friends after a night shift at the Starbucks in the service station. There were two people serving and they were great. Really upbeat, interacting with the customers and playing Christmas music. It was a really inviting atmosphere, and I felt they went massively above and beyond, so I put some money in their tip jar.

DayManChampionOfTheSun · 26/01/2019 17:36

*on Christmas day morning ^^

Lauren83 · 26/01/2019 17:37

I tip taxis, restaurants, local pub, hair/beauty, take away delivery

MyBreadIsEggy · 26/01/2019 17:38

Oh and we’ve got a brilliant postman in our village who is the nicest guy ever. Even when it’s pissing with rain, he’s smiley and just brightens up everyone’s morning Grin If I’m in when he comes round with my post, I re-fill his travel mug with coffee, and we put a tenner in a nice Christmas card for him every year.

cheesenpickles · 26/01/2019 17:40

Oh yeah I tip taxi drivers too. And we used to tip the postie at Christmas, but now there's a different one every day.

VeniVidiViciTwice · 26/01/2019 17:58

Hairdresser and eating place with table service (whether that be posh place or pizza hut) with good service and that's it.

VeniVidiViciTwice · 26/01/2019 17:59

Oh yes forgot taxi's but use very rarely.

Ribbonsonabox · 26/01/2019 18:03

I only tip as a rule at dinner if it's over 20 quid and we've had table service.

Sometimes I might tip in a cafe or bar because member of staff was especially helpful.

Recently though I just had a 5 quid sandwich and a diet coke in a pub and on my way out I saw one of the staff clearing the table and looking for a tip... and he muttered 'well fuck you too'under his breath when he couldn't see one..... which made me think maybe there is some expectation there now days?

Never in my life have I tipped a takeaway epperson or a cab driver, never seen it done either

Ribbonsonabox · 26/01/2019 18:05

Although I guess I have told cab drivers to keep the change which might count as a tip
