Just waiting for an takeaway as the kids are sick and I started thinking about tipping in the uk.

Who do you tip and who do you not? I tend to tip in restaurants with table service, my hairdresser and brow lady, we also hung tradesman a tenner as well for a pint when they've done good work.

I don't tend to tip delivery drivers for takeaways (we order on just eat and they charge for delivery)

How about you?

I tip no one, they get paid which surely would be the same as all different people in other jobs like supermarkets etc they don’t get tipped.
I do not tip taxi driver as they are so expensive here.

olivo · 26/01/2019 18:36

I tipped my Hermes delivery lady this year, at Christmas. I'd read such horror stories about other people's deliveries, and mine is fab! Other than that, I rarely tip unless someone has gone above and beyond.eg, the pool staff on holiday who were great with our children.

Lifeofsmiley · 26/01/2019 21:04

I tip in table service restaurants, taxi, take away drivers.
Don’t tip hairdresser (salon owner) or beautician.
Will give the asda driver a tip at Christmas

rookiemere · 26/01/2019 21:07

Hairdresser and hair washer.
Restaurants - 10%
Taxis
Beautician

Not takeaways as generally have paid a delivery fee already

littlepeas · 26/01/2019 21:14

I always tip in restaurants and will tip generously if the service has been good and taxi drivers usually get to keep the change. Hairdressers (one for colour and one for cut) and waxing/nails lady are tipped generously at Christmas - I’ve known all of them for years and giving them a fiver each time doesn’t seem right.

SaltedIceCream · 26/01/2019 21:24

Restaurants and that’s basically it and not the cheap pub kind were you go up and order your own food.

I don’t tip anyone else, can’t see why I should. They get paid a wage the same as me. I don’t care if your a taxi driver, I’m already paying to get from A to be B.

Same with hairdressers, when I’m paying £60-100 for my hair to be done I think they have had enough profit from one client.

And I didn’t know tipping a take away driver was even a thing!

toriatoriatoria · 26/01/2019 21:31

I tip in restaurants and will generally tell the taxi driver to keep the change.

I sometimes think I should to my beautician, as I visit every two weeks but I never really know if I'm supposed to.

Cattenberg · 26/01/2019 21:39

I tip a couple of pounds in restaurants with table service. Maybe £1 in a cafe where you order at the counter and they bring it to your table. I also tip food delivery drivers.

I tip the hairdresser a pound or two as the salon I use is very cheap. But I have to physically give it to them which makes makes me cringe, as it feels like doling out pocket money.

I don’t tip taxi drivers much as they seem pretty expensive round here, but I normally round up the fare.

I’d be quite happy if wages went up and tipping died out.

Restaurants/cafes
Round up a taxi to nearest £1 or note if it's not far off
Postie always gets some home-reared meat at Christmas as he always takes an interest in how things are going
God point about hermes ours is always the same lady and she is absolutely spot on. DP has a lot of deliveries for his hobbies and work but it's only Hermes where it's always the same person.

Jsmith99 · 26/01/2019 22:07

I hate tipping. It is outdated, feudal, discriminatory and demeaning to both giver and recipient. Customer service staff should be payed a proper living wage by their employer. Paying them should not be outsourced to the whim of the customer.

That said, I have to live in the world as it currently is, so I tip waiting staff out of a desire comply with social norms. I don’t tip anyone else.

As Mr Pink put it : “Working at McDonald's is hard, but you don't see anyone tip them, do ya? Why not? They're serving you food. But no, society says don't tip these guys over here, but tip these guys over here. That's bullshit!”

needtonamechange2 · 26/01/2019 22:45

Most people now do get minimum wage which makes tipping some people but not others (e.g shop worker) a bit odd.

What about hairdressers who own the salon - I never tip them - should I?

HesterShaw21 · 26/01/2019 22:48

Do I tip inconsistently? If you work in a restaurant or salon, or for the Royal Mail, or as a cleaner or tutor is it demeaning as a PP said?

Restaurant: 10% only if there is no service charge

In the salon:

  • Microdermabrasion + facial (costs £70): £6 tip
  • Haircut and blow dry (costs £66): £6 tip
  • Bio gel manicure hands (£61): £5 tip

Transport and travel:

  • Taxi (UK): round up to nearest pound
  • Uber (outside UK, mostly in the US): 15% tip (my Uber rating is 4.79... maybe I don’t tip enough)
  • Hotel room service and people who open taxi doors, carry luggage in the US: $1-3
  • Hotel not in US: no tipping

Christmas - 1 box of chocolates each (eg Lindor balls, Ferrero Rocher) for:

  • Postie x2
  • Cleaners x2
  • English tutor for DD
HesterShaw21 · 26/01/2019 22:49

Additional note: salon staff I mentioned are not salon owners

BillyAndTheSillies · 26/01/2019 22:50

I generally tip in table service restaurants. Tip hairdresser/nail/lashes lady.
DH has a rule that he doesn't tip if he uses ubereats/Deliveroo unless the delivery driver does legitimately arrive on a bike (unlike the ones who say they're cycling but turn up with multiple orders in a car).
Tipping seems to be less and less and lots of my friends don't tip anywhere.

Lazypuppy · 26/01/2019 23:03

I only tip if someone has gone above and beyond, otherwise that is what they're salary is for.

I worked in retail for 8 years, no-one ever gets tipped and we always went above and beyond for our customers

GrumpyOldMare · 26/01/2019 23:09

I never tip.

Restaurant/kitchen worker here for most of my working life, never been tipped, ever.

Katedotness1963 · 27/01/2019 18:56

We moved to America last summer. We were out at a restaurant having dinner and there was a sticker on the menu suggesting a 20% tip for the wait staff and 10% for the kitchen staff.

rookiemere · 27/01/2019 19:01

America is ridiculous. We were even forced to tip 18.5% at a buffet.
Actually had really bad service over there as people only interested in their tip and thought they'd get that by telling us their name and sitting at our table to take the order, rather than offering exemplary service. I would have thought that the kitchen staff would at least be on minimum wage as I know the servers aren't.

amy85 · 27/01/2019 19:07

I tip no one as I'm poor and they are being paid to work so don't see why I should give them extra...

Seniorcitizen1 · 27/01/2019 19:14

I never tip - with the prices I pay for a service I expect very good service

19lottie82 · 27/01/2019 19:18

Taxi drivers, waiters and bar staff (I used to work in a pub so usually tip £1 every time I order at the bar).

TorchesTorches · 27/01/2019 19:18

I used to tip taxi drivers in London when i lived /worked there, then I heard a report the radio about the average salary of a black cab driver, which was double my own salary. Never tipped one since.

19lottie82 · 27/01/2019 19:19

Oh and I tip the apprentice who washes my hair when I’m getting it cut.
