DH and his Brexit cupboard

Anymom · 25/01/2019 22:45

Dh has converted two of our kitchen units into his Brexit cupboard! He has filled them up with all sorts of tinned delacacies including different beans, chilli and dogs (hot!)
He's also stockpiled toilet rolls, medicines, cleaning products etc. It's all stashed away in his new Brexit cupboard, that we have been warned not to touch! I darent tell him that the dc have already been in there hunting for chocolate. They were disappointed to find numerous bags of rice and pasta but alas no chocolate. Seems he has got his priorities mixed up! 😁
AIBU to think this is unnecessary and over the top? I need help to convince him as he talking about stockpiling and filling up the freezer and I'm dreading what concoctions I will find in there! All joking aside, it is just Dh panicking isn't it? We don't really need to be stockpiling food in one of the richest countries of the world, do we?

Ffs everyone.

It will all be fine.
We were fine before 1975.
We all got through the wars.
They need us more than we need them.
There are plenty of other countries we can trade with.

bellinisurge · 27/01/2019 20:25

At the risk of letting my prepper self show @StoorieHoose , I discovered home made dandelion jelly last spring . Absolutely bloomin' gorgeous.
But don't freak out everyone- that's a prepper thing not a Brexit thing.

bellinisurge · 27/01/2019 20:25

@BrexitBingoGenerator , you are just spoiling us now GrinGrin

borntobequiet · 27/01/2019 20:27

There’s a very good reason why Lent is when it is.

StoorieHoose · 27/01/2019 20:27

@bellinisurge did you pee the bed after eating the jelly? Grin

BrexitBingoGenerator · 27/01/2019 20:28

I’ve name changed for this crusade. I’m hoping that, if I say all this crap, it will just get it over and done with in one go and then proper discussion can be resumed without further interruptions from idiots who think It Will All Be Fine.

You than thank me in mid-April by agreeing to barter your food for my spare tarpaulins or Primus stove 😄😬 (that’s only half joking)

There has to come a time when we stop talking about brexit.

I’m hoping that this time next year the brexit board will be covered in cobwebs and you’ll be back to normal, no longer obsessing over tins of beans and pasta.

Life will go on.

Scandaloso · 27/01/2019 20:28

I like to imagine BrexitBingoGenerator's reassuring mantras being delivered in a Captain Mainwaring voice. For extra reassurance Wink

Oly4 · 27/01/2019 20:28

I can’t believe people are doing this. Come on, it will be fine!

borntobequiet · 27/01/2019 20:29

Aaaaargh Glitterball

Scandaloso · 27/01/2019 20:30

Er, you do know we're just at the Withdrawal Agreement stage. This is just the beginning.

UnnecessaryFennel · 27/01/2019 20:30

Come on, it will be fine!

On what is your confidence based, Oly4?

MiceSqueakCatsMeow · 27/01/2019 20:30

Wicked, I noticed dog poo bags are made abroad. I have stocked up!

Thanks @surferjet- that’s another one banked for future use Smile

bellinisurge · 27/01/2019 20:31

@StoorieHoose you may scoff (don't blame you GrinGrin) but you get loads of local pollen like with local honey. As long as you don't get ones polluted with car fumes.

Scandaloso · 27/01/2019 20:32

You won't need dog poo bags. Hollowed out rat carcasses will do the job.

WaxMyBalls · 27/01/2019 20:33

What will remainers moan about / panic about once we leave & don’t all starve?

I can’t wait to leave just to see the back of all these ‘the world is ending’ threads

I'll be enjoying my cheaper shopping for a few weeks while the rest of you whine about the doubtless increased prices, and working on the campaign to rejoin.

StoorieHoose · 27/01/2019 20:33

No scoffing from me at all @bellinisurge! I bow to your knowledge and patience

Ta1kinPeace · 27/01/2019 20:34

Surferjet
As you and I now agree that staying in the Customs Union is the best outcome
I'll be delighted to consider my stockpile as an early summer purchase

expat101 · 27/01/2019 20:34

I work in the agriculture industry o/s and have been keeping my eyes on the goings on. Firstly I see no reason why the UK cannot (and actually I believe they are) fall back into a working partnership with other commonweath countries as they used to do before joining up with the EU. Secondly I believe from articles that I have read that at this stage no check points for animals being exported out of the UK have been set up at Calais or obvious arrival spots, so the UK export market is going to be hit hard (more food available at home?). However I do not believe your Hubby is wrong or mad, however its up to you to keep quiet to others about your stock pile because in times of food shortage, people will start looking for it the easy way and that is by knicking stuff. Perhaps review his stock pile and lists together so you are buying things you will use regardless and consider things like bulk flour and the like that can be extended into cakes, bread etc. Putting seeds aside for a spring vege patch isn't a bad idea for any situation either....

wildchild554 · 27/01/2019 20:34

@bellinisurge I don't I'd its a cooking thing ;) have you tried rosehip syrup? makes beautiful cordial :P

Scandaloso · 27/01/2019 20:36

I used to love rosehip cordial when I was a kid. I don't think they sell it anymore.

bellinisurge · 27/01/2019 20:36

@surferjet , I'm a general prepper. Brexit is just another thing to me. Like snow or ill health. I prepare for likely difficulties. Three years ago, I wouldn't have put Brexit on my list of likely bad stuff to prepare for.
I have been on as many of the Brexit prepping threads as I can trying to give the benefit of my advice and experience. I try to encourage people to take sensible budget friendly and proportionate steps to get a buffer of food in.

bellinisurge · 27/01/2019 20:37

@wildchild554 I made rosehip syrup and hawthorn jelly this year too.

wildchild554 · 27/01/2019 20:37

@Scandaloso I make my own with foraged rosehips, it's easy, never even knew you could buy it :)
