DH and his Brexit cupboard

Anymom · 25/01/2019 22:45

Dh has converted two of our kitchen units into his Brexit cupboard! He has filled them up with all sorts of tinned delacacies including different beans, chilli and dogs (hot!)
He's also stockpiled toilet rolls, medicines, cleaning products etc. It's all stashed away in his new Brexit cupboard, that we have been warned not to touch! I darent tell him that the dc have already been in there hunting for chocolate. They were disappointed to find numerous bags of rice and pasta but alas no chocolate. Seems he has got his priorities mixed up! 😁
AIBU to think this is unnecessary and over the top? I need help to convince him as he talking about stockpiling and filling up the freezer and I'm dreading what concoctions I will find in there! All joking aside, it is just Dh panicking isn't it? We don't really need to be stockpiling food in one of the richest countries of the world, do we?

I’m putting up some extra shelves to store these things, it’s quite possible that we may see problems with food medicine supplies and I’m not willing to be caught short. I’m aiming to have a months worth of rations and various meds stashed ready.

Totopoly · 27/01/2019 18:40

Oh God. I now realise this thread might actually be serious. No, I am not stockpiling, while hoping that a second vote might bring the right result...

bigKiteFlying · 27/01/2019 18:40

We were in the red bit of the snow last year - Tesco supply chain was mucked up weeks afterwards. That was a bit eye opening.

manicmij · 27/01/2019 18:41

Where does most of our tinned food come from as well as rice and pasta the EU of course. Do you actually believe the producers in those countries just stop wanting to get goods to the UK. They may well have a bit of a delay but they certainly will not stop trading, they want profit just like UK. Will be very surprised if there is a mass shortage so stop panicking.

gutrotweins wrote "I hope ..... the ERG are stocking up on haloperidol."
Love it!

HoraceCope · 27/01/2019 18:42

Well I can't afford to stockpile, plus no space, and I am not going to feed the mice the rice and pasta like last year

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 27/01/2019 18:43

Where I live there are several farm shops which sell local produce. I have been using them for many years and hope that if there is any trouble, post-Brexit, that they will remember who their loyal customers are. These shops sell local meat, cheese, vegetables and fruit. We also have an ice cream maker not far away who uses the milk from his cows so no 'foreign' ingredients. Asparagus season starts late March too so plenty of fresh food to eat. Why on earth would people stock up on loo rolls?

StoorieHoose · 27/01/2019 18:43

Did you bother to read the thread before posting that magicmij?

Oysterbabe · 27/01/2019 18:43

Who's panicking? We're preparing just in case. Do you know how much chaos a bit of a delay would cause?

cloudspotter · 27/01/2019 18:43

I'm not picky about food, so I will probably just buy a large bag of strong flour, some yeast, and some vitamin tablets. Grin

If food runs out we will just have to survive on home made bread and jam and whatever food is produced in the UK. We have a wealth of dairy farms so butter and milk should be OK. We have fruit and veg grown here, albeit a bit of a limited selection at certain times of year.

The only thing I would consider stocking up on would be basic painkillers and coffee. Even then I'd be very sceptical about them running out.

Mind you, I'm overweight, so I always joke that I could probably survive about six months without eating anyway.

I'm worried about people whose short term medical requirements will cause them stress though. I think the government needs to be more reassuring to those with specific life-maintaining needs. If there's even a gnats whiskers chance of compromising someone's health they need to have plans.

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 27/01/2019 18:44

Also, why don't people try making their own pasta? Hate the stuff myself but went on a course recently which included making our own - easy!

StoorieHoose · 27/01/2019 18:45

Loo rolls - the uk only has one days stock of loo roll at any one time - do you want to have to risk wiping your arse with your ice cream lid from your local producer?

Oh ask him where he gets his packaging from - his ice cream might be local but I’m betting some part of the packaging isn’t

borntobequiet · 27/01/2019 18:45

Glitterball = dazzled by inconsequentialities.
(Actually I’m not even sure what that means, but, like Art, I know it when I see it.)

UnnecessaryFennel · 27/01/2019 18:47

MilkTray

That sounds absolutely lovely for you.

What about all the people who don't have access to farm shops and artisan ice-cream manufacturers? Or who couldn't afford those prices?
Fuck 'em for their poor choices, I suppose?

And asparagus season doesn't start in March. And asparagus is expensive. And you can't live on fucking asparagus.

Scandaloso · 27/01/2019 18:47

People are putting stocks by precisely to avoid panicking. This is the anti-panic thread. If it had a theme tune it would be that chilled out music that used to accompany those Hamlet cigar ads.

'Happiness is a cigar called Hamlet. Happiness is also not having to hotfoot it down to Tesco to wrestle your neighbour for a packet of baps and a Toblerone'.

HeronLanyon · 27/01/2019 18:48

Been thinking that dairy and uk stuff will also be affected with lorries stuck and distribution lines a bit up the Swanee ?? Have just done a Brexit box shop by foot (central London) seem to have loads of loo roll andntinned toms not too balanced I fear Grin this is actually a complete disgrace that we are in this mess. No matter which way you did or will vote this is shameful.

bellinisurge · 27/01/2019 18:48

Don't think @manicmij has bothered to read the detailed explanations on here and elsewhere about how risky No Deal would be for the food supply. Obviously knows better than the MoD too.

UnnecessaryFennel · 27/01/2019 18:49

To be fair, I'd wrestle pretty much anyone, anytime, for a Toblerone Grin

Scandaloso · 27/01/2019 18:49

And you can't live on fucking asparagus.

you can but it's not exactly the cheapest of veg plus your wee would stink to high heaven if you were chowing down on mega servings of it.

TheCrazyDogLady · 27/01/2019 18:50

@SalrycLuxx than you for your min patronising answer x

TheCrazyDogLady · 27/01/2019 18:51

Ingrid most of my own veg.. have hens so eggs are fine my uncle is a dairy farmer my main thing is will I be able to feed my dogs!

TheCrazyDogLady · 27/01/2019 18:51

I grow*

HeronLanyon · 27/01/2019 18:53

I agree - passed a homeless guy with my Brexit box shop and wondered about him and his dog !! Obscene.

bellinisurge · 27/01/2019 18:53

@HeronLanyon , if you are worried about dairy, look at nut milks. The uht versions are tastier than uht dairy in my view. Or if you are ok with uht dairy, go for a bit of that.
Most supermarkets have powdered milk (skimmed) but you can buy Nido which is whole powdered milk on line (it's a Nestle product if that's a concern for you).

Threehoursfromhome · 27/01/2019 18:53

Sadly, although I have stocked up on things which are likely to become scarce/ cost more if there's no deal, there's absolutely no point in me stocking up on wine or toblerone because they won't last 5 minutes in this house.
