Is it just me, or does anyone else feel that it's a bit sad Dylan seemed to play such a huge part of Joan Baez's life, but not vice versa. I was listening to Diamonds and Rust on the way to work today and I always feel a pang for her as she has always publicly been associated with Dylan, covers his songs and when interviewed still talks about him and is asked about him all the time. However, the same isn't vice versa and Baez is a small footnote in Dylan's life. AIBU?q

I totally agree, I think she is an unsung legend. I love The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down and Salt Of The Earth. Her music is so evocative to me.

Yes I know what you mean, especially given that she helped start his career. She has such a beautiful voice doesn’t she?! I much prefer her covers to his originals. Also Diamonds & Rust is just glorious - so haunting.

Dylan is a genius songwriter but he's very cantankerous.

BestIsWest · 25/01/2019 23:26

Wonderful voice.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 25/01/2019 23:42

I'm not a massive fan to be honest. I really don't like her voice; it's very querulous. I think Dylan is an absolute genius and I think he just got bored with her. She comes across as quite goody goody. Not saying that Dylan isn't a complete bell end; I think he very likely is.

But Diamonds and Rust, just get over it Joan for goodness sake.

Reccy2018 · 26/01/2019 09:38

Jane, I'm not sure that article changes my mind! Almost 45 years to say that he treated her poorly and I imagine, as it was for the documentary, the filmmaker asked a question like 'do you regret the way you treated her' and used the clip of him saying he did. In Robbie Robertson autobiograohy he and the rest of the band really take the piss out of her version of The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down.

I totally agree she comes across as a goody goody.

Amen!

I do feel sorry for Joan - you can tell she idolised him and he treated her like shit.

Reccy2018 · 26/01/2019 15:00

I know, definitely. I think about a boyfriend that treated me shit, and I wouldn't keep covering his music, writing him songs and talking about him in interviews.

I saw her at Glasto, think it was 2008, and she was great.
