To think the comments in the Daily Mail are frightening

I shouldn’t read it, I know, it is drivvel, but I downloaded the MailOnline app to read the Brexit stories as my friend said most of the comments were from Leavers and I quite wanted to know what Leavers think of how Brexit related things are going. Anyway, I digress.

There’s an article on today about new mothers and their maternity rights in the workplace.

The comments have shocked me to my core!

So many posts basically claiming women shouldn’t have any rights as they choose to have children, people saying they refuse to hire women of child bearing age etc.

If this is how Leavers feel, AIBU to be scared for our future as women?

Seriously?! Grin

Where did you recieve your education?

Were you not taught to evaluate what you were reading/told?

Singlenotsingle · 25/01/2019 08:34

No, silly! You have to remember DM readers tend to be right wing. (!) And they can overreact sometimes (surely not!?) No doubt in this country, opinions range from far right to communism. Read the Guardian as well for balance, maybe?

araiwa · 25/01/2019 08:35

There are equally batshit comments all over the internet- reddit, youtube, mn etc

RiverTam · 25/01/2019 08:37

below the line comments in all papers tend to the extreme, IMO.

However, the comments on thr DM might be more balanced if the liberal left could bring themselves to climb down from their high horses and post their point of view?

As you seem to be a regular reader, why don't you post a comment, OP?

Bubs101 · 25/01/2019 08:38

I have read some of the most disgusting vitriol ever from that place, some shocks me so much I'm genuinely scared how people still have views like that, let alone air them. Think I remember seeing some awful stuff about 'eliminating' refugees. Anyway, I digress, I just end up feeling sorry for the poor lot, imagine your life being that shit, you feel the need to take the time and energy to read the article and then feel the need to write some nasty crap to make yourself feel better.

MotherOfDragons90 · 25/01/2019 08:38

@Greenthing, yes I know they are talking shite but it’s the fact people like this had enough clout to get us out the EU that scares me as there’s apparently so many people that think In these ways!

DayManChampionOfTheSun · 25/01/2019 08:39

The comments section is the only reason I read the DM, some of them are so over the top it is helerious!

My fave ones are the stories reporting on any awful American crime (normally by a man) and someone will pop up and say 'typical leave voter'. So completely irrelevant since the American bloke wouldn't have even had a vote in the EU referendum.

MotherOfDragons90 · 25/01/2019 08:39

@Rivertam I may have just done that and it now appears as one of the worst rated Blush

They are horrifying. I recommend reading something like the guardian like Pp suggested for balance and BBC for a more neutral view (although many would disagree) Don't dismiss the comments though, there are people who genuinely believe what they write and it's an interesting window into the mind of someone who thinks very differently to you, however unpleasant it is to read. If also suggest challenging their view, although most people have pretty fixed ideas, it's good for people to not be in an echo chamber environment where their views aren't challenged. It's a shame these days it's hard to do that without it turning into a slanging match e.g. calling people remoaners/stupid etc

RiverTam · 25/01/2019 08:47

so? You've posted an alternate POV and people are reading it. It's not a popularity contest, it's about getting women's voices heard. Well done for actually doing it!

EvaHarknessRose · 25/01/2019 08:47

I think it's important to hear views of all kinds, and liberal assumptions that everyone now thinks 'the right way' seems to be what got us into the mess that is current world politics.

Thecabbageassasin · 25/01/2019 08:51

I have morbid curiosity for daily mail comments too and it’s hard to imagine there are actual real people that believe the crap they publish, but I have to add that the views are not representative of everyone as the site moderators will not publish comments that challenge their propaganda.

noblegiraffe · 25/01/2019 08:53

The Mail on Sunday actually came out for Remain during the campaign which surprised me.

ArfArfBarf · 25/01/2019 08:53

You can red arrow stuff without having to sign up. I find it cathartic.

BejamNostalgia · 25/01/2019 08:59

Given it was a completely unrelated story, how do you know they were leavers? By stereotyping then?

BejamNostalgia · 25/01/2019 09:01

noblegiraffe, the normal Mail has a Remain editor now, Dacre has left. The papers position is a bit blurry now, but it’s mainly pro May’s deal.

WinnieFosterTether · 25/01/2019 09:03

I'm not sure of the correlation between Mail commenters, women's rights and those who voted leave. The funny thing is, I'm pretty sure you don't either but are making sweeping, looping generalisations. Probably best you don't venture on to the Mail again.

CurtainsOpen · 25/01/2019 09:06

Never read BTL.

ciderhouserules · 25/01/2019 09:06

Never underestimate the stupidity of the masses. I am horrified and terrified for the future, with Brexit, Trump, Putin...

higgyhog · 25/01/2019 09:06

i think it is good to read the Daily Mail comments sometimes, it makes you realise what vile views a significant part of the population actually have.

MotherOfDragons90 · 25/01/2019 09:09

@bejamnostalgia & @winnefostertether

You may have a point but some of the comments make reference to ‘post brexit’ and are written in the same angry style I can only assume people who comment will comment a lot!

They're a bunch of bitter old men upset that their dick doesn't work any more, don't give their sexist comments any value.

Quietrebel · 25/01/2019 09:15

The below the line comments in the Mail have grown ever more vicious since 2016. No one is immune from the troll army (and I am convinced most of them are either paid trolls or straight from the chan boards). Even the Queen today is being torn to pieces for daring to advocate unity in her kingdom. Even with her, they're fucking misogynists. Or take a look at the priceless comments whenever the DM reports on France, especially anything Macron related.
The humans commenting on there (as I'm sure there are bots too) are most of them little shrivelled up disgusting creatures who never managed to evolve beyond toddler stage. Bet all they want really is a strong woman to put whatever is left of their pathetic member in a vice. If there ever WAS the war they seem to so dearly yearn for with all their hateful agitation, I hope they will be the first to get torn to shreds.

WitchesWeb · 25/01/2019 09:15

Given it was a completely unrelated story, how do you know they were leavers? By stereotyping then?

Good point. I know people from all walks of life that read it.

This idea that leavers=bad/always wrong and remainers=good/allways right is really lazy thinking.

I know a very strong remainer who campained for remain and would like to revoke A50. They have some really hurrendous and archaic views on some issues.
