AIBU to dislike magicians?

There is no such thing as magic. Magicians just do stuff that they know how to do and refuse to tell anybody how to do it.

If I knew how to set the central heating but nobody else in the house did, I would tell them. I wouldn't get all fucking mystical about it, put on a funny hat, get a lady in sparkly swimming costume to stand next to me, refuse to tell anybody else how to do it and claim I was a central heating magician. That is exactly how magicians operate when they pretend to pull a playing card out somebody's anus or whatever! It's annoying and rude.

They should do the trick, explain how it was done, apologise, then go home.

What did you discover Sarah?

Mysterian · 24/01/2019 22:15

That it was a trick?

That he's bald?

That he's a smug sod?

LemonScentedStickyBat · 24/01/2019 22:19

Am so glad to see this! Thought it was just me. This is what MN is for.

ScreamingValenta · 24/01/2019 22:21

Ooh, no! I love magicians! The Paul Daniels' Magic Show was the highlight of my viewing week as a child

Havalina · 24/01/2019 22:26

Totally agree, can't stand any kind of magicians, also not keen on circuses, anything to do with cowboys can bollocks off too, even sci-fi shows with a cowboy theme, nope.

YolandiFuckinVisser · 24/01/2019 22:29

I like them. But not a lot.

Ladymargarethall · 24/01/2019 22:31

Don't the Magic Circle have a code about not telling anyone how the tricks are done?

Mysterian · 24/01/2019 22:34

Same as British Gas. Magic Circle = Corgi Registration. You have to join and then not tell anybody your tricks.

Magicians....ew ew ew ew ew. Make my teeth itch. My dear children can grow up to be whatever they wish, apart from a bloody magician.

malificent7 · 24/01/2019 22:38

I like a good illusionist...Dynamo for eg

Ladymargarethall · 24/01/2019 22:41

Clowns are worse.

InsideLegMeasurement · 24/01/2019 22:43

Derren Brown, though?

Mysterian · 24/01/2019 22:50

Yup. Brown too. No exemptions.

And Sooty.

thegreatbeyond · 24/01/2019 22:56

Even Matthew Corbett? There's nowt creepy about living with three puppets and muttering "Izzy Wizzy, let's get busy!" constantly.

Fluffyears · 24/01/2019 22:59

Yep find them all tedious including Derren Brown. My friends father used to have a card trick thing (think it was a trick deck) and had to show me the trick I played along. He was all smug saying ‘ooh you’re Trying to work out how I did it!’ No i’m Trying not to yawn and not show that I think you’re a fucking idiot.

positivepixie · 24/01/2019 23:01

Literally shouting 'yes!' reading these posts. I thought it was just me. They make me angry, I have to leave the room at kids parties or weddings when one appears. My face starts to contort in disgust and I start mumbling insults at them, I can't seem to help it. Nothing else makes me do this!

MissWilmottsGhost · 24/01/2019 23:07

Oh I agree. And definitely Brown.

I remember DH people getting all excited about his "death defying" stunts, and I would think its an illusion FFS, he's an illusionist, the clue's in the name Confused

I like it when they show how it's done, but otherwise what the fuck is the point? I've no interest in watching someone just be a smug fucker.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 24/01/2019 23:07

I wouldn't say "dislike", exactly ... more "frustrated" when you really can't work out how they've worked it

I can't count the number of times I've watched David Copperfield with that blasted Lear jet, and I'd love to know how that was done!!

Costacoffeeplease · 24/01/2019 23:11

I can’t bear them - and a member of my family was one Grin

Pyotrkrolik · 24/01/2019 23:13

I was with everyone until Sootys name was dragged into it. Yes magicians are creepy, boring weirdos but Sooty is neither creepy, boring or a weirdo. Magician is just one aspect of a complex, multi-talented and anarchic wit. You can say whatever you like about boring card tricksters, disapearing levitators but do not dis Sooty please.

BeanTownNancy · 24/01/2019 23:15

I love them - especially close-up tricks, because it's nothing I can't theoretically figure out, but their skill of execution (slight of hand) is still amazing. Like watching someone blowing glass or turning pottery - I know how it's done, but it's still fascinating to watch it done well.

5foot5 · 24/01/2019 23:15

Well i don't exactly agree because I quite like watching a clever magician. However, I love your OP and the idea of being the central heating magician gave me a good chuckle.

ZeldaPrincessOfHyrule · 24/01/2019 23:24

YANBU
The ones that come to your table at parties/weddings/corporate dinner events are the worst.
Also - if anyone knows how to work my central heating, please tell me, it's a fucking mystery and I wouldn't be surprised if it's the Magic Circle who've hidden the instruction manual.
